St. Mark Weekly Update
St. Mark Weekly Update - 23 September 2026
Our grade 7s today were off building a community of friendships and understanding. After a quick breakfast, students were off to Coronation Park for some reflection and teambuilding. Students returned to the school, had lunch provided and were off to the River Valley Zoo to enjoy God's creations in a scavenger hunt and to see the zoo - some for the first time. We thank all our teachers, particularly Mr. Martire, Mr. de Brito and Mr. Ferzli for organizing another powerful learning opportunity in a different environment.
We are looking for families to help us out with our School Council. Our meeting Monday was not well attended, which meant we were unable to conduct much of our school business. Without a school council, St. Mark would be without computers for student use, without many of the alternate learning opportunities and we would be asking families to pay even more than we already try not to. If we are unable to form a council, we will be forced to ask families to pay for much more and may possibly mean we will be without many of the learning tools - tools not provided by educational funding.
Our next meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday 27 October 2026 (6:30 pm). We require 90 minutes of your time 7- 8 times over the year. Please consider joining our meetings and to help with what you are able to.
With the start of ECSD Sports and games, we want to remind students and families of the "rules" regarding spectators and fans during league play. Unless there are St. Mark staff available to supervise, each fan MUST have a family member, 18 years of age or older, accompany them and stay with them for the duration of the game. Each student must be accompanied by their own family member who must remain with them for the entire game. This includes our school field for outdoor games such as soccer. This also includes away games at other schools.
Because Wednesday is Truth and Reconciliation Day and there are no classes, our next weekly update will be delayed to Thursday or Friday. Please look to your email for notification of our news being updated.
Wishing you a blessed week.

Orange Shirt Day & Truth and Reconciliation Day
Orange Shirt Day is a time to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and honour the survivors and the children who never got to go home. It is observed on September 30 each year because this is the time that many Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and communities. This date is a federal holiday, and ECSD schools will observe Orange Shirt Day on Tuesday, September 29.
Student Attendance and Reporting an Absence
Regular attendance is important for our students. Not only do they learn about Math, Social, Science, English, etc., but they are learning valuable skills that will prepare them for a changing work world.
Learning is moving away from memorization and moving towards skills and "doing". This means hands-on approaches where students gain valuable experience in real-time. If students miss, they may miss valuable opportunities to gain these skills - many which are not covered in a book or on a YouTube video and some which may not be available at home.
Reporting an Absence
However, there will be days our students need to be away. If they are ill or if they have appointments, it is a valid reason to be away from school.
Our school uses SchoolMessenger SafeArrival, a convenient tool that allows families to report absences 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Once submitted, the information is sent directly to the school. Reporting absences in advance helps ensure attendance records are accurate and allows the school to quickly follow up on unexpected absences. Learn how to report an absence online by visiting ecsd.net/reportingabsences.
