Updated Student Safety/Security Procedure at BHS

Starting this year, if you or your student enters the building after 7:30, you will notice a few minor updates to our building entry procedures designed to keep our students safe and our buildings secure. The process for entry is outlined below.

  • Anyone looking to enter the building after 7:30 will be required to use the buzzer and be buzzed into the vestibule area. This is no different than past practice. Students should have their Student ID out and visible in order to gain entry into the vestibule area. They may notice building security staff present to check their ID and greet them upon arrival. While this presence may be a change for the high school, it should be a familiar process for anyone who has entered one of our buildings serving younger grades during the school day.
  • Historically, once in the vestibule area, students/adults were able to immediately enter the office area as well as the building through the Main Office since the office door was open/unlocked. This door will now remain locked at all times. As a result, students/parents will need to be buzzed into the Main Office and then will have the ability to enter the building once checked in from there.
  • As a reminder, students should have their Student ID out ad visible in order to gain access to the building. Guests looking to enter the actual building via the Main Office should plan to bring their ID as well so that we can use it to check them in/out.

Advisory Update - Travel Starting this Week

Advisory started on Wednesday, September 16th.

The purpose of Advisory is to provide students with opportunities for:

  • Peer-to-peer connections

  • Peer-to-adult connections

  • Academic support

  • A consistent time to check in, get organized, and ask for help

As in years' past, the first week of Advisory was a "No Travel" period. Beginning Wednesday, September 30th, we will start allowing students to travel. At this point, students may travel to a teacher who is on their current schedule to:

  • Make up a test or quiz

  • Receive additional academic support

  • Get help with missing or challenging coursework

More information on Advisory is provided below:

  • Advisory Calender & Resources linked HERE
  • Advisory Bell Schedule linked HERE

Advisory Traveling Reminders for Students

1. Meet with the teacher you want to visit on advisory BEFORE advisory to receive a PASS. This must occur NO LATER THAN TUESDAY!

  • Keep in mind that the teacher you are visiting can only have so many students in their room, so the sooner the better.
  • The teacher you are requesting to visit, has the right to deny your request.
  • Do NOT email your teacher on Advisory Day asking them to visit your class - this is last-minute and they may not see your email. You need to be proactive and plan accordingly!

2. On Advisory Day, EMAIL your Advisory teacher and CC your visiting teacher using the suggested email etiquette below when you arrive in that room:

Dear Mrs. (Advisory Teacher’s name),

I am visiting Mr. (Visiting Teacher’s name) room for Advisory today. Mr. (Visiting Teacher) can confirm that I am in his room for attendance. Thank you!

Sincerely,

(Student’s Name)

3. Sign-in with your visiting teacher’s class to document your visit.

Failure to follow these procedures may result in getting marked unexcused absent/skipping, an administratively assigned detention, and/or revoking your ability to travel in the future.

If you have any questions, please contact your Grade-Level Principal.

Thank you for helping us make Advisory a valuable time for our students. The relationships and academic connections we build through this time can make a meaningful difference in helping students feel connected and supported at BHS.

Digital Readiness Check for All Juniors

As we prepare for the upcoming PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 7, all 11th grade students will participate in a Digital Readiness Check on Wednesday, September 30, during Advisory.

The Digital Readiness Check is an important step in preparing students for test day. During this session, students will:

  • Check in for their upcoming PSAT/NMSQT
  • Verify their approved testing accommodations, if applicable
  • Complete practice test items
  • Become familiar with the digital testing platform and testing experience
  • Make sure they are prepared and ready to go for October 7

September 30 Schedule

Students will report to the Fieldhouse for approximately half of the Advisory period based on last name:

Last Names A–L: Report to Advisory for attendance and to drop personal belongings. Then, report to the Fieldhouse during the first half of Advisory. Announcements will be made.

Last Names M–Z: Report to Advisory for attendance and to drop personal belongings. Then, report to the Fieldhouse during the second half of Advisory. Announcements will be made on when you should be dismissed from Advisory to head to the Fieldhouse.

Students should report to their regularly scheduled Advisory first unless otherwise directed.

Students with Off-Campus Classes

If you have an off-campus class or program, such as CTE or Dual Enrollment, during the Advisory time period, you are NOT expected to return to BHS for the September 30 Digital Readiness Check.

Instead, Mrs. Petit will contact you to arrange a make-up session before October 7. It is important that every student completes the Digital Readiness Check prior to the actual PSAT/NMSQT.

Why Does the PSAT/NMSQT Matter?

We encourage students to take this assessment seriously. The PSAT/NMSQT provides several important opportunities for 11th graders:

  • National Merit Scholarship Program: The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students must take the PSAT/NMSQT and meet the program's other eligibility requirements to be considered for recognition and scholarships.
  • SAT Preparation: The PSAT/NMSQT uses the same digital testing platform and measures the same core skills as the SAT, providing valuable preparation before juniors take the SAT in April 2027.
  • Academic Feedback: Results help students identify areas of academic strength as well as skills that may need additional attention before the SAT.
  • Scholarship and Recognition Opportunities: Taking the PSAT/NMSQT can connect students with additional scholarship and academic recognition opportunities.

College Board provides additional information about the benefits of the PSAT/NMSQT here:

Why Offer the PSAT/NMSQT? – College Board

Thank you for helping us make sure our 11th grade students are prepared and ready for a successful testing experience. We look forward to seeing students in the Fieldhouse on Wednesday, September 30!

Important AP Update for Students Taking AP Classes

Attention AP Students & Families!

If you are enrolled in an AP class this school year, there are two important steps and deadlines you need to know about.

STEP 1: Join Your AP Classroom — Deadline: October 2

All students enrolled in an AP course MUST be enrolled in the correct AP Classroom section by October 2.

Students will receive an AP Classroom join code for each AP course from their teacher. Students must complete this process themselves by logging into their College Board account using their personal College Board credentials. Parents cannot create or access the account on their student's behalf.

Important: Joining AP Classroom does NOT mean you are committing to take the AP Exam. At this point, students simply need to be enrolled in the correct AP Classroom section.

STEP 2: AP Exam Decision & Payment — Deadline: October 30

Students will later be asked to indicate whether they plan to take their AP Exam(s). The deadline for AP Exam decisions is October 30.

Please note: At this time, the College Board system is defaulting students to automatic exam registration when they join their AP Classroom section. We currently have a ticket submitted to College Board to determine whether this setting can be changed. Additional information will be shared once we receive the outcome of College Board's investigation. For now, students should still join their AP Classroom sections by October 2 as instructed above.

If a student chooses to take an AP Exam, two things must be completed by October 30:

  1. The student must indicate their decision to take the exam (which is currently automatically happening when students register for the AP Classroom section).
  2. Payment for the corresponding AP Exam must be completed through Parent Connect.

Each AP Exam costs $100, unless there is a demonstrated financial need that can be verified through the Food Service Department. For questions regarding financial need, please contact Jennifer Napuli, AP Coordinator, at napulij@brightonk12.com.

Families do not need to wait to make payment. AP Exam payments are now open and available in Parent Connect. If you already know your student plans to take an AP Exam, you may pay now by following these steps:

  1. Log into your Parent Connect account.
  2. Click on the Accounts/SBA tab.
  3. Click on Online SBA Payments (this should be highlighted in yellow).
  4. Select your student from the first drop-down box.
  5. Add to your cart each AP Exam your student plans to take in May and complete checkout.

Additional information regarding the exam-decision process will be shared once we receive clarification from College Board.

Having Trouble Logging Into College Board?

One of the biggest challenges students encounter is remembering which email address and password they used to create their College Board account. If you cannot log in:

  1. Try both your personal and school email addresses and use the "Forgot Password" option. College Board should send password-reset information to the email associated with your account.
  2. BHS cannot access or reset College Board passwords. College Board accounts are completely separate from our BHS systems, and school staff do not have access to students' private College Board login information.
  3. If you still cannot access your account, the STUDENT must contact College Board directly at 866-630-9305. The student hotline is available Monday–Friday from 7:30 AM–8:00 PM.

VERY IMPORTANT: Know Your Actual Password!

We are seeing a growing issue that could create significant problems on AP Exam Day in May.

Many students are using their phones as a "passkey" to access their College Board accounts. College Board sends a code to the student's phone, allowing them to log in without actually knowing their password. This may work now, but it will NOT work on AP Exam Day. Students cannot use their phones as a passkey during testing.

Every AP student should make sure they know their actual College Board username/email and password and save that information somewhere secure and accessible. Please do not wait until May to discover that you cannot log in without your phone.

Students: Take care of this now! Log in, verify that you know your credentials, save them securely, and join all of your AP Classroom sections by October 2.

Parents: Please help us by emphasizing this with your student. A few minutes spent resolving login issues now can prevent a major problem on AP Exam Day.

Important AP Deadlines

October 2: All AP students enrolled in their correct AP Classroom section
October 30: AP Exam decisions and payments due

Thank you for helping us make sure our AP students are prepared and ready for a successful AP year!

BHS Attendance Policy

As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:

Absences:

Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.

Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.

Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.

Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.

*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.

** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.

Tardies:

Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.

Career Chats at BHS are Back!

Career Chats give students the opportunity during Advisory to explore different career pathways and hear directly from professionals about their careers, experiences, and advice. These conversations provide students with a chance to learn about a variety of careers and begin thinking about possible pathways for their future.

Please see the Career Chat Calendar 26-27 for scheduled presenters. We are still looking for additional professionals who would be willing to share their career journey with our students. If you know someone who may be interested, please share the opportunity and have them sign up here.

Thank you for your continued support in encouraging students to attend Career Chats and take advantage of these valuable learning opportunities!

Thursday Academic Progress Update Emails

We will be continuing with our notification system implemented last year for students and parents, updating them both on academic progress when the student's grade falls below a 70% in any class. These notifications will go out once per week (on Thursdays to provide students with an opportunity to connect with teachers as needed prior to the weekend) and will include the following message. Notifications are based off of grades as of 5 am on that Thursday morning. These notifications are designed to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that we are partnering and proactively working to support our students and their success at BHS! Senior Yearbook Dates

Seniors at BHS typically submit a senior portrait for the yearbook in lieu of their ID photo. Portraits must be submitted to the yearbook no later than November 20 through our photo-sharing site at https://www.yearbooknerds.com/brighton-high-school. Guidelines for portraits are posted on the site (and also provided here). Parents who wish to order a yearbook or purchase a recognition ad for their senior may do so at the same site and can get a reduced price if they order early! The early deadline for senior recognition ads is November 30.

Seniors may opt to sign up for a Portraits by Alex session at the high school for a $50 fee. This session will include a portrait for submission to the yearbook only; digital images may be purchased for an additional fee directly from the photographer. Sessions are offered November 11-12 and may be reserved at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A45A4AA2AAAF94-63978728-class on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scholarship Opportunities

There are a number of local, state, and national scholarships that are shared with district personnel that we make every effort to share with our students and families as well. Some of these scholarships will be highlighted individually as they are brought to our attention or as they are in need of applicants. There are also scholarship search services for less local scholarships that we provide information on too. These include opportunities to increase access to different postsecondary options, not just college. A few of these resources are provided below as our students and families begin the search process.

Senior Questionnaire - Link Included

No matter what post-secondary option a student is considering, it is possible that they may require letters of recommendation that help them accomplish their post-secondary pursuits. One of the best tools to help in the receipt of high quality letters of recommendation is sharing the correct, important information with those who will be writing these letters. The Senor Questionnaire is one of the best ways to provide this information to building administration and counselors. A copy of student responses will be shared with the student, but we also have a digital copy that can be typed on or hand written on if that is preferred by the student and better meets their needs. Links to these resources are provided below:
