Dear Boulevard Families,

Here’s a snapshot of what a few of our grade levels have been learning this week!

2nd graders - Students are building their phonics skills. This week, students have been working on:

  • Changing sounds in words to make new words (phoneme manipulation)
  • Recognizing vowel teams and vowel-controlled sounds (such as /ar/ and /oo/)
  • Reading multisyllabic words by breaking them into parts
  • Strengthening accuracy and fluency through repeated practice

Students are using strategies like:
Finding the vowels first
Using hand motions to identify vowel patterns
Breaking words into parts to read longer words (like carpool and garlic)

Standard: RF.2.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

In reading, students are:

  • Listening to engaging stories and participating in discussions
  • Comparing and contrasting characters using graphic organizers
  • Making real-world connections (how where someone lives impacts what they do)
  • Learning new vocabulary, including words from other cultures like papalote (kite)
  • Using pictures and text evidence to explain their thinking
Standard:

  • RL.2.1 – Ask and answer questions about key details
  • RL.2.3 – Describe characters and their experiences
  • RL.2.7 – Use illustrations and details to understand text

💡 Parent Tip: Support Learning at Home

Ask your child: “Why?” and “How do you know?”

  • Example: “Why do you think that happened?”
  • Follow up with: “What in the story or picture makes you think that?”

Try this phonics game:

  • Say a word like cat and ask your child to change one sound (hat, cap)
  • Practice breaking words into parts (sun-set, car-pool)

These quick activities help build strong reading and thinking skills!

4th graders are diving into poetry while strengthening their ability to determine the theme of a text and support their thinking with evidence. Students are reading poems together, discussing characters’ feelings and actions, and identifying the deeper message or lesson the author is conveying.Through partner reading, group discussions, and independent practice, students are working to answer questions like:

  • What did the character learn?
  • What is the message or theme?
  • What details from the text support that idea?

They are also connecting this work to familiar stories (like fables and previous class texts) to deepen their understanding of how themes appear across different types of literature—including poetry.

Standard:
RL.4.2 – Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

Parent Tip – Supporting Poetry at Home:
When reading a poem with your child, ask simple but powerful questions like:

  • What do you think this poem is trying to teach us?
  • Which lines helped you figure that out?

Encourage your child to “think beyond the words” and look for the lesson or message. Poetry can sometimes feel abstract, so talking it through helps build confidence and deeper understanding.

As always, we encourage you to ask your child about their learning. Having them explain what they are working on is a powerful way to reinforce skills at home. Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are proud of the effort our students are showing as they work to get 1% better every day!

Have a wonderful and safe weekend!

Warm regards,

Principal Mahoney- Curry

  • Comparando y contrastando personajes usando organizadores gráficos

Saludos cordiales,

Directora Mahoney-Curry

Coming to school regularly helps students feel connected and confident.

Every day of school counts. When students attend school regularly, they build strong routines, stay connected to learning, and make steady academic progress. Our goal is to reach a 95% weekly attendance rate in every grade level, K–5, and we can only do this with strong family partnerships.

By ensuring students arrive at school on time and every day, families play a key role in reducing chronic absenteeism and supporting student success. Let’s work together to help every student be present, engaged, and ready to learn—because every minute counts at Boulevard.

We want every student to feel confident and prepared. Your encouragement and support at home can make a meaningful difference in helping your child approach testing with a positive mindset.

Below are a few simple daily strategies that can help support your child during the testing period:

    1. Ensure a Good Night’s Sleep
A consistent bedtime and a full night of rest help students stay focused and alert during testing.

    2. Start the Day with a Healthy Breakfast
A balanced breakfast helps students maintain energy and concentration throughout the morning.

    3. Arrive at School on Time
It is important that students arrive to school on time so they can begin testing with their class in a calm and organized environment.

    4. Offer Encouragement
Remind your child to do their best and take their time. Positive encouragement helps reduce anxiety and builds confidence.

    5. Maintain a Calm Routine at Home
Keeping morning and evening routines consistent can help students feel secure and ready for the school day.

    6. Celebrate Effort
Let your child know that what matters most is their effort and perseverance. We are proud of the hard work they have put in all year.

Our teachers and staff have been preparing students throughout the year, and we are confident they are ready to show what they know. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child during this important time.
