Home Based School
March 2024 News
A message from Principal Travnik
As the Principal at both the BGSD Outreach and Home-Based Schools I want all my students to be successful.
Here are five quick things that you as a student can do to be more successful;
Set Clear Goals:
Define clear and achievable short-term and long-term goals.
Break down large goals into smaller, manageable tasks.
Regularly assess and adjust goals as needed.
Manage Time Effectively:
Create a schedule or to-do list to prioritize tasks.
Allocate specific time slots for studying, assignments, and relaxation.
Avoid procrastination by starting tasks promptly.
Utilize Available Resources:
Seek guidance from teachers or counselors when facing academic or personal challenges.
Seek help from teachers or mentors if faced with challenges.
Participate in workshops or programs offered by the school to enhance skills.
Stay Organized:
Keep track of assignments, deadlines, and important dates.
Use tools like planners, calendars, or digital apps to stay organized.
Maintain a tidy study space to minimize distractions.
Engage Actively:
Participate actively in class discussions, group activities, and extracurricular events.
Ask questions and seek clarification when needed.
Build positive relationships with teachers and other students.
Remember, at BGSD Outreach and Home-Based, you are part of a team. We are here to support you. If you would like some help with goal setting, staying organized, or anything else listed above - please come in and make an appointment with your Teacher, EA and/or our Admin Team.
Sincerely,
Stan Travnik - Principal (Outreach and Home-Based)

Mental Health & Wellness
Vaping: What Parents Need to Know
The Southern Alberta Professional Development Consortium is holding a FREE virtual session for parents On March 6th from 7:00 - 8:30 titled Vaping: What Parents Need to Know. The presenters are from Alberta Health Services Healthy Schools and Population Health Promotion team.
Join the Alberta Health Services Healthy Schools and Population Health Promotion team for a virtual parent learning session on the youth vaping epidemic. In this session, parents will learn about what vaping is, current vaping trends among youth and the harms and risks associated with it. We’ll explore what legislation is in place at the local and provincial level to combat youth vaping use and what you and your child’s school can do about it. Ideas on how to talk to kids and help them quit, as well as where to go for more information will also be covered. Have your voice be heard and your questions answered by an expert in the field.
Kickstand
Kickstand Connect is a virtual walk-in clinic for Albertans aged 11-25 (but they said their age range is soft; kids will not be denied if they are older or younger than that). Their services are provided by Alberta-certified providers, and there is NO COST associated with them.
There is NO limit to how many times a kid can access the walk-in services; they will be directed to further support if their needs are more intensive. This program has a TON of connections to other mental health support programs in the province.
