Mentor MinuteMay/June 2026

The Mentor Minute is designed to support lead mentors and mentors in VBCPS. Every issue of the Mentor Minute explores how the Four Pillars of Mentoring can be used in meaningful, responsive ways to support new educators. The Mentoring Scope and Sequence is our map, outlining when common challenges arise and offering mentors a starting point for timely, strategic conversations. Together, the Four Pillars and the Scope and Sequence help mentors anticipate needs, spark the right conversations at the right time, and ensure support feels personal, practical, and possible.

🔍This Month's Focus: Carrying Learning Forward 🔎 🔍This Month's Focus: Carrying Learning Forward 🔎

May and June are a time of transition. New teachers are closing out their first year while also beginning to look ahead to what comes next.

As the year winds down, they are balancing the energy of finishing strong with the need to make sense of everything they’ve experienced. At this point, new educators are not just reflecting on what happened but beginning to understand what those experiences mean for their practice moving forward.

What they need most now is support in closing the year with intention by capturing what they’ve learned so they can carry it forward.

As a mentor, your focus is to help your mentee pause and name what matters most from this year, so it doesn’t get lost in the rush of the final weeks.

As we move into May and June, the Four Pillars focus on:

  • Guide: Help your mentee identify the most important learning to carry forward
  • Share: Offer perspective on how those lessons will shape their practice moving forward
  • Reflect: Support your mentee in naming what mattered most and why it matters
  • Connect: Affirm their growth and reinforce their identity as an educator

🎯Strategy to Try🎯 🎯Strategy to Try🎯

This section offers ready-to-use strategies for engaging with your mentee this month. Grounded in the Four Pillars of Mentor Support, this strategy helps your mentee capture what matters most so their learning carries forward into the next year.

Capturing Learning That Matters Most

As the year comes to a close, new teachers have a wealth of experiences, but without intentional reflection, the most important lessons can be missed.

  • Guide: Help your mentee identify 2-3 key lessons they want to carry forward.
    • What are 2-3 things you learned this year that you don’t want to lose?
    • What do you know now that you didn’t know in August?

  • Share: Offer a brief example of something you learned early in your career that shaped your teaching over time.

  • Reflect: Support your mentee in making meaning of those lessons.

    • Why do these lessons matter for your teaching?
    • Where might this show up in your practice next year?

  • Connect: Affirm their growth and future direction by saying something like, “The way you’re able to name what you’ve learned shows how much you’ve grown this year and gives you a strong foundation moving forward.”

When you use the Four Pillars to help new educators capture what mattered most from their first year, you ensure their learning carries forward into the next.
