School Office Closed for Winter Break

Message from Principal David Ewers Message from Principal David Ewers

North Community

It’s Finals Week! It’s time for your student to shine and close out the semester strong before the Winter break! We will be using the following schedule this week for final exams. Please note, we will NOT have a late start on 12/19/24 due to final exams.

Wednesday, December 18th is the first day of Fall Semester Finals. Students are encouraged to stay during 5th and 7th hour to review for upcoming finals. However, if you need to excuse your student after their 3rd hour final at 10:55, you may complete this form. No student will be dismissed by this form prior to 10:55 am. Students who do not have a completed excusal form will remain in school until 2:40. Lunch will be served, and buses will be dismissed as normal.

Winter weather is here, and we want to be sure families are as ready as possible for possible schedule changes or inclement weather cancellations. As of December 5, 2024, the Shawnee Mission School District has updated its inclement weather plans to include Plan C- which includes a 2-hour delay option. This new option aligns us with our neighboring districts in Johnson County and will facilitate common decision-making about inclement weather. Please review the district’s inclement weather procedures on this website: https://www.smsd.org/families/weather. This webpage also includes information about how you can be informed about any inclement weather announcements from the Shawnee Mission School District.

This week we have multiple nights of home basketball, swimming at the SMAC, and varsity wrestling at the Johnson County Classic at Blue Valley High School. Let’s have a great last week of the semester!

Notes from the Nurse Notes from the Nurse

If your student has not received the/any state required vaccination please continue reading.

We will be excluding them from school at the start of second semester.

This means they will be sent home after winter break, if they do not have the missing required vaccination.

Ideally, we don’t want anyone missing school due to this issue.

If you have gotten the missing vaccine please contact Bella Lopez 9936907 or Mary Alice Kelly 9936916.

We must have these vaccines recorded before second semester begins.

As always we are here to help. Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

We would love to help you out, in any way.

Attendance/Arrival/Dismissal

  1. School starts at 7:40am. Please consider having your student to the building by 7:30 to ensure they are in their first class of the day on time. Busses will drop off in the East lot while car riders need to arrive in the circle drive and get out only on the curb.
  2. Lunch is between 11:00 and 1:00. The only students allowed to leave campus for lunch are seniors with prior approval.
  3. 2:40pm is when the final bell rings. Busses will depart at 2:47pm from the East Lot. Car Riders can be picked up in the Circle Drive. 3:00pm is when students need to be settled into activities or off campus.
  4. Shawnee Mission North is in restricted access between 7:40 and 2:40. Anyone entering the building between these times must come through the main doors (#1) from the circle drive.
  5. To excuse a student between 7:40 and 2:40, please call 913-993-6945 and leave a message. Please allow 30 minutes after you call for your student to be released, and you must call prior to 2:00pm on the same day to ensure the office has time to process your request.

Attendance Reminder
“As a reminder: Please remember to contact the attendance hotline, (913) 993-6945, whenever your student is absent. Without a call, absences will be marked as unexcused, and multiple unexcused absences may lead to additional steps being taken to support your student’s attendance.

Additionally, after 10 absences, any further absences will need to be accompanied by documentation that aligns with the following reasons:

  • Personal illness. (Doctor/Dental/Medical appointments) The school may, with notice to the parent, require verification from a physician of absences due to reasons of health.
  • Serious illness or death of a member of the family.
  • Obligatory religious observances of the student’s own faith.
  • Emergency situation requiring immediate action.
  • Participation in a Kansas State High School Activities Association activity, a district-approved function, or a school-sponsored activity.

If documentation is not provided, the absence will be considered unexcused.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation!”

Safety at Shawnee Mission North Safety at Shawnee Mission North

  1. For everyone’s safety, drivers need to follow the car loop guidelines for drop off and pick up at SMN. Picture of SMN Circle Drive
    1. The red curb should be the only place cars stop to unload/load students.
    2. The middle lane should be continually moving at no more than 5mph with cell phones put away.
    3. The farthest lane from the building is reserved for visitor parking and SMN staff members. If you park during drop off or pickup, please make sure your student crosses at the center crosswalk to get to and from the building.
  2. On August 14th and August 15th, SMN completed safety drills in the areas of: Fire, Severe Weather, Lockdown, and Evacuation. Students and staff did an excellent job with these drills! While we don’t like thinking about challenging situations like these, we will be best prepared if we have thought and practiced through them if we have practiced ahead of time.
  3. The two most important safety rules at SMN are that we do NOT open exterior doors for anyone, and we do NOT prop open doors at school for any reason.

NOW THAT’S HOW TO OPEN A SWIM AND DIVE SEASON!! *** 6 STATE QUALIFYING CUTS!!!! Congrats to the North Boys Swim and Dive team on finishing in second tonight as a team behind a strong East team and by beating a solid Olathe South team with a lot of depth. North won 5 out of the 12 events tonight. All three of our newly named Senior Captains had very impressive evenings! Jack Eaton easily won the diving (State Qual.). Next was Jonathan Guild, who won the 100 Fly in impressive fashion (State Qual.) and won the 100 Backstroke (State Qual.). Next was Zak Kohoutek who scorched the final heat in the 50 Free from lane 8 to get the win (State Qual.)! Zak also caught two swimmers and passed them in the final 5 yards to snatch the victory in the 100 Breaststroke.

Two of our 3 relays qualified for State tonight. The 200 Medley Relay of Guild, Kohoutek, Caleb Guild and Jack Dunker swam a 1:46.42 to gain a State Cut. Next up was the 200 Freestyle Relay of Jonathan, Caleb, Kai Gilbert and Zak with a State Cut time of 1:36.51. Great anchor leg for Zak, splitting a 21.61. SO MANY MORE of the guys had great swims as well. Standout races were achieved by Dakota Rominger, Lincoln Bell, Cristian Pio Reyes, Cullen Bartlett in diving, Sawyer Manirath twice, and Jack Kronawitter. Congrats to the new swimmers as well who stepped up and really improved many of their races from time trials. What a super impressive night and we can’t wait to see what your next couple meets bring! The next meet for the Bison is on December 18th against Lawrence and Free State.

Bison Boys Basketball wins 82-64 vs Lawrence Lions on Tuesday night. The Bison got off to an early 1st quarter lead and were able to maintain a 10-12 point cushion for the majority of the game.
