K-Beach Elementary
A Message from Mrs. Van Slyke
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to a new school year at K-Beach Elementary! If you are new to our community, we are excited to have you join the HERD. For those returning, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue partnering with you in your child’s education.
It has been a wonderful start to the school year. Students are settling into routines, building connections with their teachers and classmates, and engaging in new learning opportunities.
This year, we will be focusing on helping students set individual learning goals and track their progress throughout the year. We want each student to understand what they are working toward, recognize their growth, and take pride in their accomplishments. We will also be intentional about making learning engaging and fun while continuing to provide meaningful learning experiences for every student.
Your support at home plays an important role in your child’s success. Simple things can make a big difference—asking about their day, talking positively about learning, encouraging them to work toward their goals, and reading together each evening all help strengthen learning and build confidence.
We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to celebrating the growth and accomplishments of our students together!
Title I
We are excited to share that K-Beach qualified as a Title I school this year!
Title I is a federally funded program designed to improve academic achievement and provide all students with strong educational opportunities.
Because we qualified, K-Beach was able to fund 1.5 additional teaching positions this year. This support allows us to keep class sizes lower, provide more targeted instruction, and strengthen the services available to our students. Title I also provides schools with resources for interventions, supplemental materials, and family engagement opportunities that benefit all children.
Our Title I qualification is determined through the number of families who complete the Free and Reduced Lunch application. Even if you don’t think you will qualify, we encourage you to apply. Many families are surprised to learn that they do.
Thank you for helping us continue to grow and strengthen programs at K-Beach through your participation. Together, we can make the most of this opportunity for our students!
PBIS at K-Beach
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a framework for teaching, acknowledging, and rewarding positive behavior in our school. We have three school expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Students are taught respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in the different areas of our school building.
Staff recognize students who demonstrate K-Beach’s expectations by passing out pom poms. We collect pom poms in a jar in the office. Once the jar is filled, we have a school-wide celebration!
PBIS allows our school to spend less time focusing on unexpected behaviors and more time on learning and reinforcing valuable citizenship skills.

Attendance
This school year, KPBSD has set a districtwide attendance goal of 95% average attendance. Last year, our students had an average attendance rate of 89%, and we know we can do even better together! By making daily attendance a priority, we help our students build strong learning habits, stay connected with their classmates, and reach their full potential.
Our school will continue to focus on improving student attendance this year. Did you know that a student who misses just two days of school each month will miss 60 hours of reading and writing instruction over the course of the school year?
Many of our classes begin the day with reading lessons. Frequent tardiness means your child may be missing critical literacy instruction, which could have a long-term impact on their reading skills. Please help us reach our goal of improving attendance this school year!
See the information below provided by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development for more details.
Potato Head Attendance Incentive
This year at K-Beach, we are excited to introduce our Potato Head Attendance Incentive! We know that every day of school matters, and regular attendance gives students the best opportunity to learn, grow, and build important connections with their teachers and classmates.
Each day that a classroom has perfect attendance, the class will earn a piece to add to its Potato Head. Students will have fun watching their classroom Potato Head come together as they work toward their attendance goals. Each time the Potato Head is completed, the class will earn a prize!
This is a fun way to help students understand the importance of being at school every day. We also recognize that students may occasionally need to stay home due to illness or other important circumstances. Our goal is to encourage healthy, consistent attendance whenever possible.
Families can help by establishing consistent routines and making daily attendance a priority whenever students are healthy and able to attend. Every day counts, and every member of our HERD makes a difference!

Migrant Ed.
Migrant Education families: It’s time for annual recertification! Our Migrant Education recruiters are reaching out to each family to help complete this quick and important process. Recertification is required each year for students to continue receiving Migrant Education services and benefits, including free school meals. If one of our recruiters contacts you, please be sure to connect with them so your student doesn’t miss out on these valuable supports. We’re happy to help make the process as easy as possible!
Attention Volunteers
We love volunteers at K-Beach! If you are interested in volunteering at K-Beach, please complete the volunteer application at the link below. Applications must be renewed each school year, and can take up to two weeks to complete.
