Digital Safety Workshop Replay and Resources Digital Safety Workshop Replay and Resources

Earlier this month, Monomoy students in Grades 3-7 had the opportunity to learn about digital safety through interactive presentations by Richard Guerry of the Institute for Responsible Online and Cellphone Communication, and families and community members also enjoyed an evening Parent University session. Topics included how to be smart and safe when gaming, using social media, and communicating online, and how to be good digital citizens. Many thanks to Children's Cove for bringing this excellent speaker to our schools.

If you missed the event, or want to reinforce this important information, you can find a video replay and other resources on a dedicated MRSD website through IROC.

Note: It is highly recommended the videos provided for Students & Parents are previewed before showing them to children under 11.

A message from the MRHS Nurse Team: A message from the MRHS Nurse Team:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our school is currently experiencing an increase in influenza (flu) cases and flu-like illnesses. To protect our students and staff, we need your partnership in preventing further spread.

When to Keep Your Child Home:

  • Fever: Temperature of 100.4°F (37.8°C) or higher.

  • Vomiting or Diarrhea: Must be symptom-free for 24 hours.

  • Flu Symptoms: Sudden fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, or a hacking cough.

Do NOT Send Your Child to School If:

  • You've given fever-reducing medicine (Tylenol/Motrin) to mask symptoms; they are still contagious.

  • They are too unwell to participate in class.

Return to School Guidelines:

  • Students must be fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

  • Symptoms should be significantly improving.

Prevention is Key:

  • Handwashing: Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

  • Cough Etiquette: Cover coughs/sneezes with an elbow or tissue.

  • Stay Home: The best way to prevent the spread of germs.

  • Flu Vaccine: Highly recommended for protection.

My internship at the Chatham Police Department has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I have had the opportunity to learn firsthand how a police department operates, while being supported by officers who are knowledgeable, patient, and eager to teach. The environment is welcoming and hands-on, allowing me to build practical skills, gain valuable insight into law enforcement, and grow both personally and professionally. Overall, it has been a meaningful and impactful internship that I truly appreciate.

What I love most about my internship at Harwich Elementary is being able to interact with young music students. I am able to teach them what I know, and I can play instruments alongside them while they sing. I have had the opportunity to play ukulele along with their song at their monthly concert, and I have been able to go and teach them how to read and play different kinds of rhythms. I am really excited to be part os the Arts program at HES.

I have really been enjoying my internship in the MRHS Performing Arts Department! My music teacher, Ms. Richard is my mentor for my work, and I love being able to help with the ins and outs of the performing arts at the high school. My already keen interest in music and teaching has only been heightened through my internship. I have been creating programs and posters for concerts and shows, designing advertisements for performing arts events to appear in the Friday Focus, and assisting students with learning musical note names/how to play them on their instruments. I am constantly working hard to help in whatever ways I can, whether that be emailing people about upcoming performing arts-related events, or just finding music for the next concert. Through my internship, I am learning about the various aspects that go into running a successful band or chorus class, as well as the processes used to maintain the performing arts department as a whole.

What I enjoy most about my internship at Homeless Prevention Council is the opportunity to support people in my community while learning how a nonprofit organization operates behind the scenes. Over the past several months, I have helped staff with organizing resources, assisting clients, and completing daily office tasks that help the program run smoothly. I have learned about housing assistance, food access, and financial support services, and I understand the importance of these programs for individuals and families facing hardship. This internship has opened my eyes to the challenges many people experience and the compassion, patience, and dedication required to help them. Knowing that my work contributes to making a positive impact on people’s lives has been incredibly meaningful. I am grateful for this rewarding learning experience, as it has helped me grow both personally and professionally while strengthening my desire to continue helping others in the future.

I enjoy interning at Nickerson State Park every day because we are always doing something different. If you enjoy the outdoors and working on fun professional projects, then this internship is for you. Just a couple of weeks ago, another employee and I built a large fire platform after having received a phone call about a fire on the beach two weeks earlier. Recently, I presented to the Brewster Garden Club about the park's different ecosystems. I love using the skills and information I am learning in this field and applying them daily. I have learned many valuable things during my internship here, and I am confident that I will be able to apply these experiences throughout my life.

What I enjoy most about my internship at Veterinary Associates of Cape Cod is how truly welcoming and educational the environment is. Over the past two years, I have been given hands-on opportunities to learn and observe many different aspects of veterinary medicine, from patient care and clinical procedures, to the daily responsibilities that keep a practice running smoothly. The staff consistently takes time to explain their work, answer questions, and encourage my curiosity, which has made the experience both supportive and engaging. Through this exposure, I have developed a deeper understanding of the field and a greater appreciation for the dedication required in veterinary medicine. Their ongoing mentorship and trust in me have played a significant role in inspiring me to seriously pursue a future career in veterinary medicine.

What I enjoy most about my real estate internship with the Leighton Team is the hands-on learning environment it has become. Over the past several weeks, I have assisted with a wide range of tasks. I have assisted with property lock boxes, attended meetings, and observed plans and activities on the marketing side of things. I have also got to help the team set up and decorate for the holidays! It has been a highly beneficial learning experience and a supportive teaching environment. I am excited to continue developing a deeper understanding of the real estate industry.

What I have enjoy the most about my internship at Brewster Animal Hospital is how it is a peaceful environment where I am given the chance to learn to provide care for animals. So far, I have been given the opportunity to draw up vaccines, organize supplies, and learn to restrain animals during blood draws. Even when I am not doing hands-on work, I can observe how techs and doctors treat animals for various conditions. Brewster Animal Hospital is a great internship where I can take in new information every day.

What I enjoy most about my internship in Ms. Friedman’s 8th-grade science class is being able to help students learn and stay engaged in class. Each day, I assist with activities, help students with questions, and support Ms. Friedman during lessons and labs. I like seeing how different students learn and figuring out the best way to explain concepts so they make sense. This internship has helped me build patience, communication skills, and confidence, and it has given me a better understanding of what it is like to work in an educational environment.

Every day, I am gaining new skills, seeing how decisions are made, and understanding what it takes to run a successful athletic program. I am really enjoying my internship at Cape Cod Hospital. When I first started, I would restock the shelves in the rooms with supplies and do small tasks such as bringing patients drinks or snacks from the kitchen. After my first week, I started training as an aide by shadowing certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and nursing aides. Now, I take patients’ vital signs and assist with daily living activities, such as eating, dressing, and personal care. This opportunity has been an incredible learning experience for me. Not only do I get to help and provide comfort to patients, but I also get to work with very kind and compassionate people.

I have been a part of the music department at Monomoy Regional High School for five years now. Over this time, I realized I had never truly been able to appreciate all the hard work that goes into concerts, performances, festivals, field trips, and more. I now understand all of that, having had the opportunity to work alongside Ms. Richard and other interns to make these things happen. We select music, write and transpose parts, help younger musicians, arrange programs, and organize our school's field trips, among many other things, all while being part of the program ourselves. It has been greatly beneficial for me to know and be a part of what contributes to this amazing program.

What I like most about my internship at Ardito Law Group is how much I am learning and being immersed in the work ethic of a law firm. In the past few months, I have had the opportunity to work alongside real lawyers and paralegals, and I have had the privilege of learning from and collaborating with them. I have been able to assist with daily office tasks, including filing, proofreading, and answering the phone. I have even had the opportunity to write deeds, open client files, and compile them, as well as handle property title paperwork. This internship is a truly fantastic opportunity and a great privilege. Through interning here, I have gained a genuine understanding of what it is like to work in a legal capacity, and I have also learned how much I enjoy being surrounded by the fantastic and intelligent people at Ardito Law Group during my internship.

I have been enjoying my internship with Dr. Otto in his classroom. All the students are so much fun, and I love helping them with physics! At first, I was a bit nervous because I had never worked with younger students before, but they all warmed up to me within the first week. With them, it is like I am relearning my favorite subject while being able to help them; and if I ever have any questions, I know that Dr. Otto is more than willing to help me with them!

TYLER FLEISCHMANN

My experience as an intern in the high school, assisting Ms. Creedon with her Geometry Honors class, has been a very valuable experience. It started off a little strange. I was not assigned to the role at the start of the year, so by the time I joined, the class was already well underway, and I found myself having to catch up on what the students had already learned. I was in a room full of students that I did not know and was being told to help them with a subject I had not studied for four years. But eventually, I found myself getting to know much of the class, and through watching Ms. Creedon’s expertise in teaching as someone who has been working in the profession for a very long time, I was not only reminded of everything about geometry that I had forgotten, but I was also able to pick up some of her teaching methods. While I may not become a teacher, I still believe that I will be able to use many of these skills at some point in my life.

SEAN NEEDHAM

During this semester, I interned with Ms. Oliver, an academic teacher at our high school. Throughout my internship, I learned many of her hidden skills and approaches that she uses with her students when they require more reinforcement and understanding. These skills are very important and unique in her job, as not many people truly understand the effort and support she provides, or the extent of her care for her students. She is genuinely one of the most crucial people in the building. Her room is a safe place for many other students who do not even have her as a teacher. She just has that comforting and safe vibe that we are so lucky to have in the building. I would also run errands throughout the building, collecting papers and delivering them to others. I enjoy interning with her, and I am lucky to have her as my internship supervisor. Learning these skills can help me better understand and connect with people who need more support in life. I am also learning in the classroom setting, as Ms. Armstrong sees me as an important and strong leader, and would love for me to pursue a teaching career.

What I like most about my internship as a teacher's assistant in Uncovering China is how much it expanded my understanding of what it takes to be a teacher and adapt your teaching style to different classroom environments. Over the past 2 months, I have worked with students on assignments, organized class materials, supported Ms. Jones, and helped plan lessons. I have also had the opportunity to discuss Chinese history and culture. Overall, the internship has been a rewarding experience that has helped me better understand which teaching styles work best for each student and has reinforced my learning about China.

What I like most about my internship at Moran Engineering is that I get to see how land is plotted and surveyed, and how the data is transferred onto a computer to create a land plan. It is also really cool to see how various parts of a house function that I never knew about before, which gives me a whole new perspective on how my house works and provides me with the tools to identify the problem and determine the best course of action to fix it. The work I do on computers at my internship will help me in college because I will use the same tools and applications. I am very grateful to be a part of a school that does internships like this.

I also get to learn about the behind-the-scenes aspects that are a huge part of the job, such as reports and paperwork, and I can ask any questions I may have. My experience at Solis has been amazing! It has been such an incredible learning experience to glean knowledge about the retail world. I have gotten to see many behind-the-scenes things people do to run a store. Here are some of the things I have done at Solis. I have steamed clothes before they went out onto the floor, I have tagged and priced so many different products, and I have helped decorate for marketing purposes. I also modeled many pieces of their clothing, and they posted the photos on Instagram! I am thrilled to continue my internship! This has definitely made me realize how much hard work goes into running a business.

What I like most about my internship at Cape Cod Truck is how much I have learned and the great mentors there. When I first started, I had little to no tools, but over the past few months, the mentors at Cape Cod Truck have helped me get all the basic tools I need to do automotive maintenance. I have learned how to do oil changes and brake jobs on my own, which has really helped build my confidence in the shop. Working alongside experienced technicians and being trusted to complete jobs independently has made this internship a great experience. Every day I am learning something new and improving my skills as a diesel technician.

I have had a very rewarding experience at my internship, over the past five months at the Harwich Fire Department. The firefighters at the station have really made me feel like I am one of them. FAINIE JEAN BAPTISTE

During my internship at Cape Gynecology LLC, I have had the opportunity to learn more about medical procedures and gain hands-on experience. I started by getting to know the team and understanding the codes used for testing patients for conditions like HIV, cervical cancer, and colon cancer.

One of the most interesting parts was observing a Pap smear test, where the doctor uses a small brush to collect cells from the cervix, then places the brush in a vinegar cup to see if any of the cells react, so it can determine whether the patient has cervical cancer. I also saw how a colposcopy is used when a more detailed examination is needed.

Throughout my time there, I took pictures of how I set up trays for the doctor during her checkups and procedures, which were very helpful and helped me learn about the importance of organization and attention to detail in a clinical setting. I also had the chance to do basic checkups with patients, including measuring their height, weight, and blood pressure. I helped clean rooms, organize patients' clothes, and fold sheets to ensure everything was ready for each patient’s visit.

Overall, this internship is an exciting and eye-opening experience that has taught me more about healthcare, teamwork, and the importance of attention to detail. It has inspired me to learn more about my future career as an OBGYN.

VICTORIA GUZMAN

I intern at Veterinary Associates of Cape Cod in Yarmouth. I personally enjoy my internship because it teaches me many topics I will need to know when I work as a veterinary technician. We learn many different things, like how to hold a dog's or a cat's legs for an ultrasound, how to draw blood from the leg or neck, how to cut the nails of dogs and cats, and how to restrain dogs based on their size and whether they are on the floor or the table. Additionally, I help with laundry, kennel cleaning, and cleanup after surgical preparation and tech appointments! My internship is highly hands-on and observational; when you are not in treatment, you are watching an ultrasound or a surgery, or in a room where the techs bring the pet and owner and ask a series of questions about what is wrong with their pet. I love everything about my internship, including the staff members; everyone is very kind and welcoming. This internship gave me the opportunity to experience what it is like to work at the vet and confirmed that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. It is always very exciting to be there.

My favorite part of my Internship with The Varney Group is the real-world experience I gain working with the accounting books of high-end restaurants across Cape Cod. I have daily tasks to balance the spreadsheets for all these restaurants and ensure the debits match the credits. The people at the office assist me and keep me up to date on their clients, the monthly allocations, and whatever I can do to help them out. Sometimes I take trips out of the office, handing out business cards to find future venture businesses, or do simple tasks like taking documents out to the shredder. Overall, I have greatly enjoyed my internship as an accounting assistant and feel prepared to take on the more challenging role of an accountant in the future.

What I have enjoyed most about my internship at Cape and Coast Bank in Yarmouthport has been the team I work with. My manager, assistant manager, and coworkers have been absolutely fantastic. I have been learning a great deal from them, working with customers, operating the drive-through, and completing change orders. Every day, there is always another opportunity to learn something new; every customer at the bank requires something different, and learning how to assist them in these situations has helped me acquire knowledge and develop compassion. This internship provides me with valuable work experience for my future career, and I am very grateful.

I have been enjoying my internship at Chatham Elementary School in Mrs. Laub’s second-grade classroom! Mrs. Laub is an amazing mentor! She cares about creating a comfortable learning place not only for the students but also for me. I follow the second graders throughout their day, moving from the classroom to the cafeteria and even to their specials. I work with students in small groups during reading time to help with comprehension and fluency. During math, I teach them in small groups or individually, on whatever they are learning. I work to keep the students on task and sit with individual students throughout the day to keep everyone focused. Working with Ms. Laub and the students in her classroom brightens my day every day.

GRACE MORGAN

What I enjoy about my internship with Mrs. Barr is not only witnessing what teaching is really like beyond the student perspective, but also that it is helping me grow personally and academically. One of the most important things I have noticed over the past months is how much preparation and work these teachers do behind the scenes. I have also learned that sometimes teaching is not about delivering information; it is about responding to students' needs in real time and learning how to be flexible. My mentor and I were close before I started interning for her, but now I can come to her with not only any questions about my internship, but also real-life situations.

Since September, I have been doing my senior internship with my mom's small business, Grey Horse, a furniture-refinishing business that finds free or inexpensive pieces on Facebook Marketplace, similar sites, and even on the side of the road, then makes them look totally new. Throughout my internship, I have helped with sanding, painting, cleaning, organizing materials, and learning how to price and photograph each item for selling. I appreciate this experience because it taught me hands-on skills and what it really takes to keep a small business running, from sourcing materials to talking with customers. I have really enjoyed seeing old furniture transformed into something beautiful, and I have gained a new appreciation for the work and creativity that go into every finished project.

What I love about my internship at Harwich Elementary is being able to help children explore creativity. It is amazing to help prep art lessons while experimenting with new creative strategies for every class. Being able to help the students explore more art mediums than ever before in their everyday lives. I help clean up, organize materials, prep for activities, and keep the class on schedule and engaged. These are all parts of the process to reinforce the curricula and to help them become more expressive and productive. I am considering a career as an art teacher, and I am happy to be an active member of the community and team at Harwich Elementary.

BEN OTTINO

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time interning for Ms. Piccarello. Acting as an assistant has granted me a brand new appreciation for the preparation that an educator requires; whether it be cleaning pipettes from previous labs or running down to the copier machine for a stack of worksheets. These may be basic tasks, yet whenever I am able to help the “flow” of a class in session, I feel a wave of fulfillment wash over me. The way I see it, the easier a class is to get through, the higher the likelihood of an 8th grader discovering what their future passion is. My biggest hope is that my presence in the classroom has inspired a student or two to chase after the things that fascinate them. Aside from my regular duties as a teacher's assistant, I had the privilege of helping raise two Northern Diamondback Terrapins in partnership with the Mass Audubon for reintroduction into their natural habitats. It is a shame that their population history has been so unstable, because they are such uniquely fascinating critters. As of now, the turtles (Lefty & Righty), have both grown considerable amounts since the beginning of the year and are expected to grow more over the next few months.

TRISTAN ELDREDGE

Throughout the past several months, I have been interning at the Homeless Prevention Council, and I really enjoy it. One of the guys who works there I knew from pickup hockey. Having someone I already knew there helped me settle in quickly. My favorite part of the internship is the feeling of giving back to the community. For example, there is an 'Adopt a Family' program where people receive a list of items from less fortunate children, and they go out and buy the toys and clothes, donating them to us. We then give them to the parents to wrap and give to their kids. With this program, HPC also provides every child with a free bike, and I helped unload them and hand them over to the families. This internship has given me a new perspective and appreciation for all the things I have, and it has provided me with an amazing opportunity to contribute to my community.

What I like most about my internship with Mr. Newby is learning about architecture, and since I have a class with him, I get extra help from him. I want to learn architecture in the future. He shows me what to do, explains it to me, and lets me do it myself so I can understand better. When I am stuck and he knows I am capable of doing something, he lets me figure it out myself. What I like most about my internship at Neurologists of Cape Cod is assisting on procedures. I shadow wonderful Doctors and Nurse Practitioners throughout the day and get to assist in office procedures. I am also responsible for rooming patients and taking vitals, a skill that will be very helpful as I advance in my career. This internship has proven incredibly helpful in helping me decide the role I want to play in a healthcare setting, as well as the type of environment I prefer to work in. I am excited to continue my journey in the medical field, and this has been an excellent start!

RYAN ELHILOW

This year, I had the opportunity to intern in a Grade 9 and Grade 10 physical education class. I really enjoyed this experience because it gave me insight into what to expect if I were to pursue a career in Physical Education. Mr. Legg was a great teacher and really taught me many new, helpful skills that I will be able to apply in the future. I cannot wait to apply my learned skills to further my education and pursue a career in physical education.

KEIRA HALEY

During my internship at Liberty Commons in Chatham, I have been shadowing Certified Nursing Assistants and helping residents with activities. I observe daily care routines, assist with fun events when needed, and learn how each CNA works with different behavioral residents and the best ways to approach their situations. I also help with activities, which have shown me how important social interaction and hands-on activities are for the residents’ well-being. This internship has helped me experience the joys and the challenges of the medical field.

I can assist a resident with a game, participate in different conversations, and engage in group activities. The Liberty Commons team is very caring toward each patient, treats them with respect, and goes above and beyond to ensure everyone is welcome and safe. These moments have helped me realize that activities play a significant role in creating a positive, supportive environment.

Overall, this internship has been a valuable learning experience that has helped me gain confidence and real-world experience. It has given me a better understanding of the responsibilities of a CNA and how important they really are to a resident's daily life. This experience has strengthened my interest in healthcare and motivated me to continue toward future goals in this field.

ALEXA VERMAAK

I enjoy my internship in the MRHS tech office because it has given me a deeper understanding of how things really work behind the scenes. While I already had some basic knowledge of laptops and their inner workings, this experience helped me connect that knowledge to real-world situations. I was able to observe how everyday technology is maintained, troubleshoot, and repaired, which gave me a clearer picture of how theory is applied in practical environments. Seeing a professional identify and solve problems helped me better understand the importance of attention to detail and critical thinking in technical work. In addition, I was able to learn more hands-on, which made the experience even more valuable. Working directly with equipment helped reinforce what I already knew while also introducing me to new tools, techniques, and problem-solving approaches. This internship showed me how useful my existing skills can be and how they can continue to grow with experience. Overall, the internship helped me prepare to apply my knowledge confidently, whether that means fixing my own devices or pursuing further opportunities in technology.

Scholarship Opportunity: The Cape Cod Foundation STEM Scholarship Scholarship Opportunity: The Cape Cod Foundation STEM Scholarship

In 2022, The Cape Cod Foundation launched its first discretionary scholarship fund with a $34,000 bequest. Since then, with continual support from private foundations, individual donors, and businesses, The Cape Cod Foundation Scholarship has grown to provide multi-year support to students each year to help ensure they have the resources to complete their education. In 2025, five local students received a total of $35,000 in scholarship support from this fund.

Building on this success, and to address the demand for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math, The Cape Cod Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the STEM Scholarship for the 2026 season. This new fund will provide $10,000, multi-year awards to students pursuing STEM degrees, expanding opportunities for local talent in these high-impact fields.

Because of these initiatives, the Foundation's scholarship team was invited to speak on a panel about the power of collective giving at last fall's National Scholarship Providers Conference. This proven philanthropic model continues to maximize impact for students in communities across the country.

If you would like to learn more about or donate to either of these scholarships, please contact Mary Beth Burwood, Director of Education and Workforce Development at mburwood@capecodfoundation.org.
