AFO Projects in 6th grade STEM Class!
Sixth graders in Mrs. Kauffman’s Project Lead The Way Design & Modeling class at Midview East Intermediate School worked in engineering design teams to create and build an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) to help a child with cerebral palsy walk better. Over 80 cardboard AFOs were built during the PLTW/STEM class design challenge. The top AFO prototype from each homeroom was selected and those teams were invited to present their project to students from the Midview High School PLTW Biomedical Science and Engineering programs. Students from Mrs. Dembiec and Mr. Winslow’s classes visited Midview East Intermediate School on Tuesday, November 18 for the annual Top AFO Project Showcase. Midview East’s engineers were able to present their prototypes and the high school students asked them questions and evaluated the effectiveness of their prototypes. The top prototype was chosen and all students involved were able to celebrate the many benefits of being a PLTW school district - the chance to complete rigorous tasks, utilize critical thinking skills, apply the engineering design process, and share the results with others.
Mrs. Conway's 5th grade ELA Class!
Mrs. Conway's ELA classes put a fresh twist on classic tales as they explored Author's Point of View and Perspective.
After reading multiple fairy tales, students chose a story to "flip," retelling it from a different character's perspective. Most dove into the mind of the Big Bad Wolf or a Prince, while some got highly creative, writing from the perspective of Cinderella's glass slipper or the brick house in The Three Little Pigs!
This engaging project helped students see how a story's meaning can change dramatically depending on who is telling it.
6th Grade Rocks Under Pressure!
Mrs. Moore's science students have been busy digging into the rock cycle! Using Starbursts, warm water, and heavy textbooks, they simulated how sedimentary rocks transform into metamorphic rocks. The warm water provided the heat and the textbooks applied the pressure needed to show how rocks change deep underground without melting.
To wrap up the unit, students created choice projects—ranging from creative posters to original songs and plays—to demonstrate the unique characteristics and formation processes of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.

distinction that reflects our commitment to fostering a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. This achievement highlights the dedication of our students, staff, and families as we work together to uphold the core values of Ready, Respectful, and Responsible every day.
Kindness Cart Roll Out
We love recognizing students who show kindness in their daily actions. Students earn tickets for helping others, showing respect, and performing acts of kindness, which they can later “cash in” for fun prizes and rewards. This program encourages a positive school culture where thoughtful behavior is celebrated, and students are motivated to make our community a kinder, more caring place every day. It’s a fun way to highlight that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference!
