To Service, Protect, and Inform
Understanding that the primary mission of this department is to protect the lives and property of our citizens, we continue to accomplish this goal with a balanced traditional approach to policing coupled with proactive efforts to prevent crime. Our department remains open to public scrutiny and accountable for our actions. Our officers have a sense of community involvement with many officers involved in several diverse organizations throughout the town. This community involvement provides a variety of information that allows officers to make sensitive and appropriate decisions on issues of mutual importance.
Process:
- Take Civil Service Exam
- Candidates are from the Civil Service List and based on the number of open positions
- Candidates are notified to report to the police station to sign the list and whether they will accept the appointment.
- Candidates then fill out a comprehensive application. They are then processed through a rigorous background check conducted by the Detective Division, which include credit checks, residency (Weymouth residents have hiring preference), former schools and employers, military (if applicable), neighbors, etc. are all potential references.
- Once the background check is passed, candidate are interviewed in front of a panel
- A conditional offer of employment may be offered. The candidates must then pass a medical exam, psychological exam and a physical fitness test prior to attending the Academy.
- Academy training is approximately 24 weeks (800 hours) Training locations may include Plymouth, Randolph or the Transit Academy in Quincy.
- Upon graduation, there is a 12 week Field Training program. The Field Training can be extended if remedial efforts are needed.
- Upon completion of Field Training, Officers are assigned to a shift and can patrol along in a sector car.
- Officers are on probation for 12 months, during which time they can be dismissed, as they do not have Civil Service protection at that point.
- After 3 years, Officers are eligible to start taking promotional exams (Sergeant).
- Speciality jobs such as Detectives, Traffic/Motorcycle, etc. are filled as they become available.

Correctional Facility
The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office serves the public safety needs of the residents of Norfolk County and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts while prioritizing professionalism and accountability, character, opportunity, and community for both employees and our programming.
We believe that public safety involves preventing crime as well as addressing the conditions that threaten the health, well-being, and safety of all Norfolk County residents. Prevention, intervention, education, and hope are the keys to our public safety mission. We pursue this goal in two ways: by operating a safe, secure, and humane correctional facility that focuses on offender rehabilitation and post-release success; and by investing in Norfolk County communities with programming focused on education, leadership, youth development, civics and citizenship, crime prevention, vocational support, substance use prevention, elder support, and working with law enforcement. This work is made possible through both a highly-trained and dedicated workforce and an investment in partnerships and collaborative agreements with public and private stakeholders.
This mission is realized in four priority areas: Professionalism & Accountability, Character, Opportunity and Community.
