A note from Mr. Lee A note from Mr. Lee

Cozy for a Cause

This week our Leadership students kicked off part one of our food drive with Hats Off to Hunger. Students were encouraged to bring in canned food items in exchange for the opportunity to wear a hat during the school day. The turnout was fantastic, and it was great seeing our students excited to help others.

Next Friday, Leadership will host part two of the drive, Don’t Sleep on Hunger. Students who bring in a canned food item will be allowed to wear pajama pants for the day. It’s a fun way to support a very real need in our community, and we hope to see even more participation next week.

I am very proud of the work happening here at Carter. Our kids are growing not only in the classroom but as well-rounded young people. Initiatives like this teach empathy, leadership, and the importance of giving back.

As we head into Thanksgiving, I encourage all families to find a small way to give back together. Whether it’s donating food, helping a neighbor, or simply doing something kind, every little bit makes a difference. We all need that reminder, especially this time of year.

Special Remarks from Mr. Syswerda Special Remarks from Mr. Syswerda

Carter's boys basketball team opens competition with away games at Carleton on Monday and Warren Woods on Tuesday. The second marking period moves quickly so students should avoid falling behind on assignments. Encourage your child to ask for help when needed and prepare appropriately for all assessments.

Elks Hoop Shoot Elks Hoop Shoot

Your local Elks Lodges, Clawson-Troy Elks #2169 and Macomb Elks #2292 are hosting the Elks National Foundation Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest on Sunday, November 23rd at 1:30 PM. The contest will be held at the Boys & Girls Club of Troy at 3670 John R Road Troy, MI 48083.

The Hoop Shoot is a free throw contest for youth ages 8-13 open (you do not need to be an Elks Member or associated with the Elks). The program is free to all contestants and provides youth an opportunity to compete, connect and succeed through hard work and healthy competition.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Kids are separated into three age groups, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13, with girls and boys competing separately (age group is based on the contestant age on April 1, 2025).

Contestants advance through local contests, starting with a Lodge contest, followed by Districts, States, and Regionals to the National Finals in Chicago. Six National Champions will have their names and photos displayed at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

WHY HOOP SHOOT?
Gritty kids are determined hard workers. Gritty kids become gritty adults with strong work ethics and goal-setting skills. It’s free! The Elks cover travel costs through each level.

Mrs. Gurney's Health Class Mrs. Gurney's Health Class

Mrs. Gurney's 4th hour health students recently had CARE come into the classroom. They talked about the effects of alcohol and the importance of making safe, responsible choices. Students participated in a hands-on activity using “alcohol goggles,” which simulate how a person’s vision and reaction time are impaired after drinking. The experience gave students a better understanding of how alcohol affects the brain and body and reinforced the importance of avoiding risky behaviors. It was an educational and eye-opening experience for everyone!
