Upcoming Seminar Topics-Winter 2026 Registration
This week we are beginning a series of Oakland ACE Seminar learning experiences that will prepare students to register for their Winter 2026 courses. One of the benefits of being part of ACE is that our students receive access to a preferential scheduling window at Oakland Community College. This means they can register for classes one week before all other OCC students.
We anticipate that OCC will release Winter 2026 courses on October 17. Students will prepare during Seminar and then submit their course registration form the week of October 20, with final submission due in Seminar by Friday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m.
The next several Seminar sessions will be especially important. Students will:
-
Learn more about their three-year plan and how it aligns with high school graduation requirements.
-
Study the anatomy of a degree, such as an Associate in Arts.
-
Explore the OCC Math course sequence.
-
Begin choosing the types of courses they want to take.
Some students will also start working with transfer guides, which help identify which OCC courses have the highest likelihood of transferring to their intended college or post-program destination.
Students are always welcome and encouraged to schedule an appointment with an OCC counselor to plan their courses. This can be particularly valuable for students considering more intricate pathways or when using transfer guides.
Thank you for your support as we guide students through this important process.
Anatomy of a Degree
As students plan for their winter courses, they may be looking at the requirements to earn an Associate Degree. The four degrees students can choose to work toward in the ACE program are:
Michigan Transfer Agreement
Students often choose courses from the Michigan Transfer Agreement to take as part of our program. As part of preparation for Winter 2026 registration, all students are provided a copy of the MTA and it is linked here.
Math at OCC
As part of our program, most students will complete at least two math courses at OCC. During registration we discuss how to place into Math. Students can and are encouraged to take the ALEKS math placement test as the most accurate form of placing into Math. Students can also use their SAT score to place into Math. We encourage students to be through high school Algebra 2 before taking the ALEKS math placement test. Please see this site for more information about the ALEKS math placement test.
Students must take a practice ALEKS test and then sign up for a proctored ALEKS math placement test. Students can take ALKES multiple times if they wish.
Course Formats at OCC
OCC offers a wide variety of course formats for students. Students are encouraged to take in person, 15 week classes when possible.
OCC often offers other formats such as online. However, there are several formats within the "online" category. Check out this link on the OCC website to see all course formats that will be available to students to sign up for this winter: https://www.oaklandcc.edu/academics/course-formats/.
Prior to registering for a course, check out the "instructional methods" or "meeting format" information so that you understand what course format you are choosing.
