F & P Protocol: A Tool for Transformation by Rebecca Miles, President of The Reading League Michigan

This event is also being offered on August 9th from 6:30 pm to 8 pm EST.

Are you frustrated with F & P leveling and LLI in your school or district? Please consider this learning opportunity. You will leave with a protocol to walk stakeholders through an experience designed to make it very clear that leveling is not an appropriate model for instruction or intervention through the use of internal data. The protocol is presented as an interactive experience embedded in a narrative. The presentation includes real data, school and student-level outcomes including a framework for introducing the protocol and an explanation of how it came to be. Come with the expectation to be reenergized to change the world one school and student at a time!

Differentiation: The Key to Serving ALL Students Climbing the Ladder of Reading Presented by Nancy Young

Overview:

Students in most PreK through grade 3 classrooms exhibit a wide range of skill mastery and learning needs when it comes to reading and writing. Educators must teach foundational skills to some of their students while ensuring those students who are advanced keep progressing. This requires differentiation: providing lessons, practice opportunities, and extended learning based on individual needs.

In this presentation, Nancy will summarize the research supporting differentiation, and provide examples of ways to differentiate reading and writing lessons and practice sessions – including enrichment opportunities for advanced readers and students who are 2e (gifted and dyslexia). She’ll explain why any time spent in whole-group instruction must be very carefully and intentionally planned. Attendees will find out how weaving code-based movements into lessons and practice can be a win-win.

Printable Guide — Science of Reading: A Defining Moment

Although the scientific evidence base for effective reading has existed for decades, the term “the science of reading” has gained traction in the last few years, potentially leading to misunderstandings. As a result, we believe that a common definition is useful for the field.
