Nichols Navigator News #4
A Leader in Me School
Sunday Announcement!
Hello Navigators!
It was an exciting week 2 of school at Nichols. Classrooms are settling into routines and students are engaged in academic activities. This week our Art and STEM programs will begin. All students will visit Art and STEM classes weekly so make sure you ask them about these classes.
We will hold our Back to School night on September 14th beginning at 5:30 PM. More details about the schedule will be shared soon. This event is geared towards parents/guardians to meet teachers, learn about curriculum, and to understand expectations.
On Wednesday at 6:00 PM we will hold our monthly PTO meeting in the MPR. Please join us to hear how the PTO will support Nichols this year. We value your feedback and involvement and hope to see you there.
Please consider OUSD device insurance for the device your child was given from school. It is low cost and can help prevent any unwanted charges.
Please see our website for our outside food policies related to class parties. We too like to celebrate your children, but we are unable to accept food from outside providers. We suggest a goody bag of small toys, erasers or pencils as a way to celebrate.
Please see the update in the newsletter about school safety.
TK students will have short days for the first 3 weeks of school. School will begin at 8:15 AM and dismissal is at 12:25 for the first 3 weeks. Beginning September 8th they will follow the Kindergarten schedule noted above.
The gate to the left of the office will open at 7:45 each day. Breakfast is served from 7:45 - 8:10 for those who choose to eat at school.
The Kindergarten gate will open at 8 AM, but Kindergarten and TK students can be dropped off at 7:45 at the gate to the left of the office. Kinder/TK students will be sat in one area and walked to the Kindergarten playground at 8 AM.
I so appreciate all the parents who reached out to inquire about volunteering, joining the PTO and more! We will need other parent representatives for our English Language Advisory committee, District parent advisory committee and our School Site Council. All of these roles help us determine budget priorities. Please reply to this email if you are interested. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
Feel free to reach out with any questions. Thank you and have a great night.
School Safety Information
- In September, all of our staff will participate in an Active Assailant training where we will learn and practice response protocols for keeping our students safe in the unlikely situation involving an armed intruder.
- Our school regularly practices disaster and evacuation drills with our students and staff, including a minimum of two lockdown drills per year.
- OUSD partners with the Oceanside Police Department to provide four dedicated School Resource Officers (SRO) who are trained members of the National Association of School Resource Officers. Our SROs are stationed at schools within the district, and are regular visitors on our campus. The SROs will respond to any safety issues that arise at any of our schools.
- OUSD employs a highly trained team of over 45 Campus Security who serve our middle schools, high schools, and Surfside Academy.
- This summer, our administrative and custodial team led by the Student Services Coordinator, SRO(s) and OPD SWAT Officers conducted a comprehensive campus security walkthrough.
- Our school has the Raptor Visitor Management System which tracks all visitors or volunteers entering campus. Authorized visitors are then presented with a clearly marked identification badge.
- Our school has a comprehensive Crisis Response Plan that is reviewed annually with all staff, and placed in all classrooms, that details how to safely respond to specific emergency situations.
Nichols PTO
We will hold out first PTO meeting on 8/31 beginning at 6 PM. We have so many exciting ideas to share.
Please join our PTO this year. The PTO does so much for our school and we do need your help. We know schedules are busy and there is no obligation for attending meetings or volunteering. We hope you will join to be a member and assist when/if you can.
