Month of the Military Child Proclamation from Governor Healey
zoom_out_map

Dear Bedford Public Schools Community,

This morning, I had the privilege of joining two special events that exemplify our core values of community and inclusivity. First, I joined our annual Military Student Breakfast at BHS, where we celebrated our military-connected students for their service to our country (see proclamation for Governor Healey, pictured, and photos from the event above and at Hanscom Air Force Base's Flickr Page shortly). Many thanks to BHS counselor Brian DeChellis for organizing this annual event. Afterward, I headed over to the Lane School where I was able to enjoy a wide variety of talents from our amazing group of 5th graders (pictured and read more below). What was more impressive than the talent on display (which was pretty impressive) was the positive support of students for their peers who were taking risks to share something with the community. Thank you to all of the staff, student, and caregiver volunteers to help put on these celebratory events that are part of what make Bedford Public Schools so special. This afternoon, I was able to end the day at the Davis School and enjoy some of the 2nd grade Stress Free Day (many thanks to teacher Karen Shamon), which was a great way to head off into April break---enjoy vacation week!

Best,

Lane School Grade 5 Talent Show Lives On! Lane School Grade 5 Talent Show Lives On!

Thank you to Lane teachers Katie Maniatis and Rachel Orlovsky for keeping the Grade 5 Talent Show tradition alive at Lane School, which was held last night for parents/caregivers and this morning for students. The Grade 5 Talent Show has been a cherished tradition for over 30 years started by John Fichera, a former fifth-grade teacher, whose dedication to students’ growth and creativity left a lasting legacy. The event is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore their creativity and build confidence by sharing their talents with peers and families. This year, Katie and Rachel dedicated countless hours to organizing this event for our students. The decorations were created by fifth graders inspired by the movie “Wish.” There were a variety of wonderful performances including a finale dance choreographed by amazing high school student volunteers: Aiden Green, Lucy Keefe, and Juliet Oliveira. Fifth graders worked behind the scenes as stage crew and announced their classmates' acts. Six fifth graders came together as community organizers to choose the MSPCA and the Bedford Science Center for a fundraiser. It was a wonderful celebration of the class of 2032 and all of their talents!

Throughout this school year, in alignment with Strategic Objective 2.1 regarding student wellbeing, the School Committee has considered whether a change in school hours is in the best interest of students. This Bedford Healthy School Hours Communication Plan outlines multiple opportunities for stakeholders to learn more about the research on healthy school hours and to provide feedback. In particular, please note that 5th - 12th graders will have this opportunity during school, and that there are family & community Forums planned for April 29th (in-person), April 30th (virtual with a focus on Boston families), and May 1st (virtual). All stakeholders will be able to take a survey beginning on May 5th. Families who wish to opt their child out of the survey should submit a written request to their school principal by Friday, May 2, 2025. For more information, please contact your school principal.
