Field Trip Information! Field Trip Information!

We're going on a field trip!

We will be heading to the Washington Pavillion in Sioux Falls, SD. Your child should have brought home a permission form for you to sign - if you have not seen it yet, please ask them for it!

We are asking for volunteers to go on this field trip with us, and we need around 20 volunteers. If we have more, we will do a random draw to decide. If you are interested in volunteering for this field trip on March 20, 2025, please email Natalie Bohnert at natalie.bohnert@marshall.k12.mn.us. She will email you the form to fill out online and get your name put down. Everyone interested in volunteering will need a background check and will have their child in their group. Thank you all for your support of your students and for making this field trip happen!

Language Arts Language Arts

6th grade language arts is beginning a new curriculum for our third and fourth quarters. The third quarter will focus on our relationship with nature. Students will explore the essential question, "what role can we play in the balance of nature?" through various non-fiction texts. They will work on writing, comprehension skills, set goals, expand their vocabulary, and continue working on grammar and how different words interact within the structure of a sentence. In addition, students just wrapped up their rotary essay and will get to find out our Marshall Rotary Clubs selections and winners near the end of February. Students will also be looking at their fall and winter NWEA scores and access how they can continue to grow and learn as we continue to the end of the year.

Social Studies Social Studies

In social studies we are starting with budgeting and moving into resources. The students have each chose a career and budgeting a monthly budget for any expenses and extras they want to purchase throughout the month.

Science Science

The students in first semester science learned about astronomy during December and January. We used some flashlights, foam balls, and other materials to model how rays of sunlight hit the Earth and moon in different ways to create our seasons, moon phases, day/night cycles, and more. We also learned some Native American stories about the sky, and some students explored Greek and Roman myths too. Other students choose to read the book Night of the Twisters the last week of the semester, which is based on the 1980 tornado outbreak in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Students that are starting 6th grade science for spring semester will be exploring forest fires and the water cycle for the first few weeks. For class each day students need their charged computer, a set of headphones, and a 3-ring binder that we will be organizing our paper and notes in.

Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Family and Consumer Science (FACS)

In FACS, we ended quarter 2 with our food’s unit! Students learned all about food and kitchen safety and then got to use those skills to make strawberry and banana smoothies, mini pizzas, chocolate chip cookies and homemade DQ blizzards. It was so fun to get to see students work together in groups to create some delicious food. It was a wonderful way to end the quarter. We begin quarter 3 with our personal finance unit, discussing savings and checking accounts, writing checks, credit cards and how to budget our money.

Media Arts Media Arts

Welcome to Media Arts!

This quarter we'll dive into some really fun activities that will spark imagination and help students express themselves in new ways. We will learn about photography, advertisements, stop motion animation, digital citizenship, and more!

We are off to a great start already - we are just beginning our first project. Students will be using Canva to create a collage that represents themselves. I'm looking forward to a creative quarter!

Reading Interventionist Reading Interventionist

I can't believe we are halfway through the year! We are off to a great start in the 3rd quarter of 6th grade Reading E & I. With the change in schedules, we had to do placement assessments again to find the best fit for the new students in their reading level. We've also learned how to do SRA labs and Skill Building Cards. I like to celebrate the victories, and we've had some small and big ones already. I try to encourage my students to slow down and take their time reading and answering the comprehension questions and Learn About Words questions which include vocabulary. This helps them to increase their percentages on their graphs, which is what we like to see!

Happy Winter! Stay warm!

Mrs. Tolk

Math Interventionist Math Interventionist

A new quarter brings new students into Math E & I. The new groups are learning how to work through problems together. They are using academic language while discussing how solve today's math problems. These moments foster better memories and also give the students a chance to work on social skills as well. It looks like it's going to another great quarter with the 5th and 6th graders!
