Principal's Notes Principal's Notes

We're excited to bring back the Volunteer Village at Cole School this year! Volunteers might play a reading or math game with a class, read aloud, work with a small group, or lend a hand in the copy room. Each volunteer signs up for a regular time slot and comes in at that time throughout the school year. Time slots will be determined later based on your availability and can be as short as 20 minutes. Parents, caregivers, grandparents, and community members are all welcome. Volunteers usually help outside their own child's classroom, elsewhere in the building. If you're interested, please fill out this brief survey. Thank you for partnering with us to build a strong school community!

Toys Stay Home, Learning Comes to School

We’re asking for your help in keeping personal toys at home. This includes squeeze toys, keychains, trading cards of all kinds, and similar items. While we know these things are special to our students, they can easily become a distraction during the school day and are sometimes lost or broken.

If your child benefits from a fidget to help them focus, please don’t worry. We have plenty here at school and will gladly provide one to any student who needs it.

When a class earns a special PJ and stuffy day, teachers will let families know ahead of time so students can bring in a favorite friend from home. Otherwise, we appreciate your partnership in helping our students keep their attention on the great learning happening in their classrooms each day. Thank you!

How do I report my child's absence? We have received several questions recently about how to report a child's absence (note, phone call, email, Pick Up Patrol). The number of options can be overwhelming. We have removed the absent option from Pick Up Patrol and would prefer if parents either email the teacher and cc the office (theresa.festa@norwellschools.org and maureen.coleman@norwellschools.org) or call 781-659-8823 if your child is going to be absent.

Norwell Food Services are in need of:

1. Food Service Manager: prior experience necessary, 180 days per year, good benefits and competitive compensation.

2. Food Service Substitute: No experience necessary, flexible schedule, follows school calendar may lead to a more permanent position.

Please apply here if interested.

We had a very successful parent book group two years ago when we read The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. We have decided to host another parent book group this year. If you'd rather check out a video of Isabelle Hau's research and thoughts on the importance of relationships in the development of children, this video is a good place to get a preview. Please see the invitation below and RSVP if you'd like to join me in discussing Isabelle Hau's book, Love to Learn. We hope you'll join us!

Great to have a sunny Friday! Students continue to learn about growth mindset and goal setting, and also work on their academic and social-emotional fall screeners. We have also welcomed back Spider the reading therapy dog on Tuesday afternoons! I am hoping to rotate all interested students in to read with him this year, so please let me know if you think your child(ren) would enjoy this opportunity. I have also started hosting "lunch bunch," where kids can sign up to eat in my office with up to 3 other kids in their grade. If your child is interested and needs my help to find an open time, please let me know. I can be reached at anne.walsh@norwellschools.org, or by calling the school and entering ext 1111.

Physical Education News

K-1 continued their toss and catch challenges with a choice of using a bean bag, fleece, or wiffle ball. They worked with partners tossing underhand (step, swing and point) and catching (thumbs together for a target). Grade 2 learned a new throwing, catching and fleeing game called Pickle/Run Down and were introduced to the lead pass. Third graders' played a throwing and catching game of Invaders/Defender. Fourth and fifth graders practiced their underhand, overhand, and lead passes in games of Dice Bonk. Collaborating, strategizing, defending, moving to open space and using their adding skills from the numerical dice. Lots of movement, teamwork and fun!
