Art - "How To" Zines

Students in art class are creating “ how to” inspired zines to share their knowledge on a topic they feel passionate about. Some of the themes students have picked so far are baking, gaming, basic phrases in their home languages, fashion, and origami (among many others). They are learning about the ways in which artists incorporate text, collage, and paint into a functional artwork. Students looked at examples of political zines from the 70s and 80s to inspire their ability to create a meaningful and informational piece.

Band - NYSSMA and Concert Preparations

Students win 6th and 8th grade bands are busy preparing for this week's Spring Arts Showcase. It is the final project for our 6th grade students before they make their choice between art and music for what they would like to study for the rest of the year. Our 7th and 8th grade bands are also preparing for the Spring Concert on May 25th and 26th, stay tuned for more details on this exciting performance. Finally, our 8th grade band is also excited to compete in NYSSMA's Middle School Band festival this May. We can't wait to share the product of all their hard work!

Theatre - Pantomime Presentations

Our Theatre RIT classes just finished a pantomime theatre unit where students worked in small groups to create five-step pantomime pieces which included a clear story arc and character relationships and development. Each group completed a full design process for their show and presented them to an invited performance in the auditorium during lunch. Students are now learning about the play "La Gringa" in preparation for next week's performance and will then begin work on choosing a children's book to adapt into a ten minute play for elementary schools.

Materials Request: Have clean, recyclable materials at home (paper towel rolls, egg cartons, cans, etc.)? We have several Arts Integration Projects as well as our Spring musical which are in need of these materials. Please send your student with any you have to Ms. Becker in Room 304.

MS 50 is excited to welcome ¡Repertorio Contigo! and their presentation of the play "La Gringa" on April 4! The New York Times writes that "La gringa is the story of a young woman from New York who goes to Puerto Rico in search of her extended family. When she finds them, the complicated misperceptions that develop on all sides unfold in comic dialogue that arouses constant shouts of laughter and bursts of applause." This Spanish language play is performed with English supertitles, making it fun for our whole community.

There will be a student performance for our theatre, dual language, and BSE classes at 1:00PM and a FREE performance for our families at 6:00PM. We want to thank our New York City Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez and the Cultural Immigrant Initiative for generously sponsoring this performance! We hope to see you there!
