The Cannon Connection
2024-2025 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
September 29 - October 5, 2024
Good morning Cannon families,
A huge THANK YOU to our PTA Hospitality Coordinator, Brooke Teeter Stocz, and Dad's Club member Mario Cordova for spoiling our staff with sweet treats to start our Monday Staff Professional Development Day! We had a great day of learning, and our staff is pumped to provide data-driven personalized learning opportunities to grow our scholars! Every instructional minute counts, and our staff take the responsibility to grow our students very seriously. From the time our staff and student(s) arrive until the time they leave their day is filled with high teaching and learning standards. I bet our Cubs are tired when they get home!
It's a very busy time of year with a lot going on - please make sure to check out all of the save the dates below! This week, we will have Yearbook Pictures taken and we will conduct Hearing and Vision Screenings (See below for more details).
GT Referral and Testing Dates: The GT and ASPIRE referral window for 5th Graders for the 2024-2025 school year is October 14 - November 4, 2024. Testing will take place December 2-December 20, 2024. Kindergarten- 4th grade referral window is December 2 - December 20, 2024, and testing will take place January 8-31, 2025. For more information on the GT identification timeline, click here.
Family and community support is critical for the academic and social well being of our Cubs! When schools, families, and communities work together, students are more likely to be prepared for school and achieve college, career, military readiness. We are so LUCKY to have an amazing COMMUNITY filled with LOVE and KINDNESS! How you treat people matters, and our community partners recognize the proud local citizens we are fostering with Cub PRIDE (Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Empathy)!
Are you looking for ways to support your Cub(s) academically? Research shows that the BEST parent/guardian academic support is to read each night with your scholar(s) a minimum of twenty minutes a night! Want to practice math? - use flash cards to identify shapes and mental math facts.
STEM teaching and learning is an instructional approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM education practices, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, and critical analysis.
Each month we focus on a STEM Habit of Mind characteristic and celebrate our scholars that are chosen to be inducted into our Cannon STEM Habits of Mind Hall of Fame! "The STEM Habits of Mind position children as inquirers, observers, describers, encoders, decoders, engineers, pattern sniffers, experimenters, measurers and predictors." Our Hall of Fame ceremonies begin this Friday! Teachers will reach out to let you know if your Cub is selected to receive this prestigious honor (Dates listed below)!
We had another outstanding show of Cannon Cub Spirit this past Friday! Thank you for helping spread our school pride by purchasing spirit gear and sending your Cubbies prepared each Friday to celebrate our Cannon school community! Please continue to send your Cubs in their spirit gear all year, but especially each Friday!
As a reminder, if you have a dismissal change for your Cub, please reach out to the front office as soon as possible. If you want your child to go home with a different ride or friend, they must have the blue car tag, or they can park and go to the front office for driver's license verification.
As always, thank you for your parent partnership!
Proud to be your principal,
Dr. Tina Garrett
