“THE GREATNESS OF A COMMUNITY IS MOST ACCURATELY MEASURED BY THE COMPASSIONATE ACTIONS OF ITS MEMBERS.”
- Coretta Scott King
Good Afternoon, CUSD.
It has been a difficult and emotional week in CUSD as we navigated the shocking incident and emotional aftermath of the student assault at CMS.
Our hearts are with the victim, who thankfully did not sustain a life-threatening injury and is recovering. We also acknowledge the trauma the incident caused for students and staff members. Our trusted counselors have been doing amazing work, speaking with anyone who needs help processing what happened. We have provided additional counseling at CMS and will continue to meet the needs of those who seek counseling services. Our Triton students have demonstrated such resilience and compassion and are deserving of our appreciation. Parents, please reach out to our administrative and/or counseling staff if you believe your child may benefit from services.
I also want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Coronado Police Department, CUSD district administrators, CHS counseling staff, and the entire CMS staff who acted with purpose and collaborated on managing an extremely difficult situation with calm and caring professionalism. It has been a tough week for them and I am so proud to work alongside this team of dedicated professionals.
Please save the date of October 30th at 4:30 - 6pm for a community forum to provide an opportunity for us to share information about how the district approaches safety, communication, and emergency response. This forum will be a collaborative effort with Coronado Police Department, Safe Harbor, and the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC).
Respectfully,

Ed Tech Parent Series
SDCOE is excited to announce the upcoming Educational Technology Parent Series, a free virtual learning opportunity open to all parents and educators across our region. This series is designed to support families and school communities in navigating educational technology and resources that empower student success.
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
- Maintenance & Operations Department: SSES is feeling super appreciative of the responsiveness, attentiveness, and follow through of our M&O Crew, who have fixed gates, closet locks, and leaky pipes, as well as planted beautiful plumeria at our site! They’re a small but mighty and effective team in CUSD! We know how hard they work for all of us!
- Sara Mills is a super PTO Board Member and super sub for us as well. She has a huge impact on our school community, with her tireless energy, great ideas, humor, and determination. We know that she will give us important feedback to help us be our best, and she offers solutions as well. She is a great example of involved parents and impactful volunteer. She’s somebody who frequently makes herself available to step into sub at the last minute and some of our toughest-to-fill positions. We appreciate you so much, Sara!
- Caroline Goerke is our new BCBA and she has hit the ground literally running at our site, helping students, staff, and families with behavior support and approaches. She’s calm, confident, friendly, and super positive and brings sunshine with her wherever she goes. We are grateful to have her on our team.
- Jose Iniguez: Jose does an outstanding job keeping our school clean and facilities working for students. He is friendly, responsive, and dedicated to doing his job at a high level. Whenever there is something that needs to be cleaned or fixed, he responds quickly and with a friendly demeanor. His efforts are seen and noticed by many throughout the school, and we are fortunate to have him on our staff.
- Megan Battle is simply an amazing resource and human being in our district. I am always dazzled by how much she knows and understands, and yet her expertise is always shared with humility. She is a patient, steady, consistent resource for all of us, as well as a compassionate and an empathetic person. I can’t imagine doing my job without her available to help and advice.
- Jeff Howell just started working in our district as our new Education Specialist at both VES and SSES —not a simple role and tough to start after the school year is underway! Nevertheless, Jeff is not only undaunted but has a reassuring can-do, easygoing, friendly, and positive demeanor that inspires confidence in his teammates. He clearly enjoys being a human amidst other humans and we are excited about the impact he will have on the students and families he serves. Welcome, Jeff! We are so glad you’re part of our family!
- Ellie is a member of our Fifth Grade Leadership Team, and in her role as Kinder Buddy (helping escort kindergartners from lunch to recess), she has both connected with her young peers but also devised ways to incentivize them to be safe and responsible, bringing stickers and small prizes for teachers to give them. She has the natural instincts and demeanor of a future educator and I’m excited for her future. Thank you, Ellie, for caring so much about our kindergarteners and for taking great initiative at Silver Strand!
