Connecting Students to Careers: CTEC Career Fair

On March 26, OHM BOCES CTEC strengthened the connection between education and the local workforce by hosting its annual Career Fair at the Howard D. Mettelman Learning Center. Students from CTE and P-TECH programs were given a unique platform to connect with 31 regional employers and explore the wide range of career opportunities available in their community.

Students were able to engage with industry professionals, learn about specific job openings, gain insights into various industries and discover what employers are looking for in prospective employees. This direct interaction provided students with firsthand knowledge of the local job market and allowed them to begin building professional networks, an invaluable step in their career development. The career fair served as a bridge between education and industry, giving students a chance to explore potential career paths and make valuable connections with local businesses.

A special thank you to the 31 regional employers who dedicated their time and resources to participate in the career fair. Your commitment to connecting with and inspiring our students is greatly appreciated!

Farm Animals Visit CTE Animal Science

On April 4-8, students in the OHM BOCES CTE Animal Science program were visited by a calf, goats and piglets during class to build upon their recent lessons.

Animal Science students have been studying ruminant digestion, which entails four different compartments in the stomach, and non-ruminant digestion. On April 4, a calf visited the classroom as an example of an animal with a ruminant digestive system and students built a ruminant digestive tract out of clay. On April 7, goats visited the classroom as another example of an animal with a ruminant digestive system. On both days, students observed the appearance of these ruminant animals (bulgy stomachs) and discussed how they process their food.

On April 8, piglets visited the classroom as an example of an animal with a non-ruminant digestive system. Students observed the commonalities between pigs and humans, as swine have the most closely related anatomy and physiology to humans.

CTE Conservation Maple Syrup Production

This winter, students in the OHM BOCES CTE Conservation program gained hands-on experience in maple syrup production! From tapping trees to collecting sap and crafting pure syrup, they embraced outdoor learning while developing valuable conservation skills. The program prepares students for careers in forestry, wildlife management, heavy equipment operation, surveying and more. They also gain expertise in hydroponics, aquaculture and plant propagation in our on-site greenhouse. Through real-world experiences like maple syrup production, students gain practical skills that connect them to nature and future career opportunities!
