Principal's Corner Principal's Corner

As we approach the end of the 2024–25 school year, it’s hard to believe how quickly the time has passed! The final weeks are always filled with excitement—field trips, track meets, and the return of warm weather make it a memorable time for everyone. While we look forward to these fun events, it’s also an important time to stay focused on academics. For our secondary students, especially those in Grades 9–12, now is the time to check PowerSchool and take stock of your progress. If there are any missing assignments or areas that need improvement, connect with your teachers and make a plan. A little extra effort now can make all the difference in finishing the year strong.

The final exam schedule can be found later in this newsletter. Students in Grades 9–12 will attend regular classes until Wednesday, June 18, and begin exams on Thursday, June 19. Grade 7–8 students will continue with regular classes until Monday, June 23, and write their exams on June 24 and 25.

This past week, our Kindergarten to Grade 9 students had a fantastic cultural experience attending a Powwow in Viking. It was a meaningful opportunity to observe and participate in this Indigenous celebration. Our students represented our school well, and we’re grateful to Viking School and all the organizers who made the event possible.

The final month of school is filled with exciting events! Highlights include the Graduation Subway Breakfast and the Elementary Track Meet on June 10. We’ll wrap up the year with our Elementary Awards Ceremony on June 26, the last day of school. Families are invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held in the gym starting at 1:30 p.m.

There is plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. Please check our website and social media pages to stay up to date with everything that is happening.

We are currently finalizing our staffing plans for next year. We will share any changes for the 2025–26 school year through School Messenger as soon as the information is available. We expect to have these updates ready by early June.

If you have any questions, please contact us at the office.

b) Room Rep Reports:

Kindergarten (submitted by Hannah Stefanishion): Mrs. Tanton - Our kindergarten room is all a buzz with the news that we are raising chicks and adding a new adventure to our hatching experience/resume: Ducklings! Our new babies are set to hatch on Tuesday, June 3rd. We're really looking forward to seeing the ducklings take their first swim! We had a successful Mother's day celebration on May 9th. Each kindergarten kid had their mom accompany them for this exciting afternoon event. Every mom left our event with a fresh massage, pedicure, manicure, and make-over. Those moms never looked so beautiful and refreshed. Kinder kids just seem to have that special touch! On May 15th the kinders went on a field trip to the Wipf's Greenhouse & the Holden Colony. We learnt about all the different plants, good bugs/bad bugs found inside a greenhouse and they even got to play in the soil and plant their own Marigolds. We had a super experience visiting the Holden Colony. The colony students selected 3 hymns to sing to our kinders (they harmonized their voices and sounded beautiful) and in return we sang them "Baby Bumble Bee" & "Love is Something". We toured around the colony and say their church, kitchen, laundry facility, greenhouse, and their lambs. The colony kids were super excited to ride the bus with us around the colony. One of the colony girls said "This is so fun!" None of them had ever ridden a bus before. We ended the afternoon by gifting them with a soccer ball and there were smiles all around from both groups of kids. By the end of the day both groups of kids were intermingling and enjoying each others' company, which was the icing on the cake! Carey Hauck is our Community Reader this month. She is the owner and one if the hair stylists at the Purple Scissor Hair Salon in town. She will be reading tour class on May 23rd. At the end of the month our kinders will be doing a scavenger hunt around the Nature Trail and also on a hunt to find the perfect fishing pole (stick) for their dads for Father's day. It is a very serious and ultra important task to find the most perfect stick, there's a lot of sticks out there, but somehow they seem to get the job done every year.

Grade 1 (Chantelle Hayes): Mrs. Lang - No update. Late entry: We have lots coming up! Honey tastings, a bake sale, a field trip to the Camrose Museum and swimming pool, an in school field trip with Butterfly Wings and Wishes.

Grade 2 (submitted by Laura Zwack): Mrs. Schlaut - Everything is well in the Grade Two room. We are working really hard to finish up the last units in each subject. We're also looking forward to the Pow Wow field trip tomorrow and the upcoming trip in June to the Camrose Museum as well as the in school visit from Butterfly Wings n' Wishes. We have started talking about all of the changes we have gone through this year, along with all of the growth we have had in our academic and social skills preparing us for next year. But for now, we're taking the time to keep on learning about new things, appreciating our time together, and enjoying each other as classmates in our last month as grade two students.

Grade 3 (submitted by Kristie Nahajowich): Mrs. Schmidt-Teigen - In ELA we are continuing on with Charlotte's Web. In Math we are finishing up with measurement and then moving on to geometry. In Science we are exploring food chains and the ways animals respond to stimuli in their environment. In Social Studies we are beginning to talk about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and what it means to be a global citizen. I just wanted to close by giving a big thanks to you all for your support of Daysland School and all of the projects and ideas we have going on, from buying glue for the makerspace to organizing and delivering hot lunch every week and everything in between! You are all amazing and your time and efforts are most appreciated.

Grade 4 (Alison Eshpeter): Mr. Charchun - We will be attending a Pow Wow at Viking Arena on Thursday, May 22. In ELA, we will continue with our spelling and grammar tests. We are continuing to compare adjectives this week with differentiating between "good" and "bad". We have been practicing our poetry over the last couple of weeks and will wrap that up this week with a student choice poem. Students will write their own poem and will be able to choose from a Limerick, Haiku or any other rhyming poems we have practiced in class. In math we have our Geometry Unit Test this week. Students continue working through their review booklets in class yesterday. Most students completed them in class and we went through the answers together before the end of class. We have 2 units left in math that we will be combing because they are both shorter. They cover Patterns and Time. In Social studies, we finished up and presented our Museums/Heritage Site Group Projects in class yesterday. Groups then got together and prepared for their presentations which also occurred during class yesterday. Overall everyone did a great job on them! In Science we are continuing our Earth Systems Unit. Our focus this week will be on ways human activity can affect our planet.

Grade 5 (Kirby Schmidt-Teigen): Mrs. Thomas/Mr. Wilson - The Grade 5's had a great time at swimming lessons this month and many were successful in passing their levels! In ELA, we have just wrapped up a unit on poetry and are going to spend the next few weeks exploring graphic texts, including comics, infographics, maps, and memes. In Social, we are working hard to put all the things we have learned about ancient societies together to grow our understanding of the rises and falls and successes and failures of civilizations. Fun stuff in the fifth grade! In Science, we are wrapping up our study of Earth Systems and heading into learning about Life Systems, where they will look at biological systems of humans and plants. In Math, we are working on Equivalent Fractions, which will lead us to adding and subtracting fractions. After that, we are heading to Geometry! As exciting as all that sounds, what they are really looking forward to - and are maybe a little nervous about - is our Circle Square Ranch trip coming up in a couple of weeks.

Grade 6 (submitted by Brenda McKay): Mrs. McKay - Grade 6 has had a great month! In ELA, we read aversion so Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Everyone found the adaptation funny and enjoyed being assigned their own parts to read from the script. We have our first PAT next Thursday, May 29. It will be the written part of the ELA test. Then the following wee, we are headed off to Circle Square Ranch. It is sure to be an amazing experience for everyone! We are almost done our measurement unit in math, and have on final unit to complete: geometry. In Science, we have started a unit on ecosystems, and in Social Studies, we are nearing the end of the curriculum for the year as well. This has been a fantastic group to teach and I know they are all ready for junior high in the fall.

Grade 7/8 (Cristin Zimmer): In Social the grade 7/8s are doing a mock trial about Louis Riel and his resistance movements. In Science they are working on volcano travel brochures. In Math grade 7s are working on mean, median, mode, and outlines. In ELA, they finished the novel The Giver and they will start a final project creating board games, newspaper articles, comic strips, book trailers, etc.

Grade 9 (Candice Guhle): Mrs. Tobler - This week, Grade 9s will start preparing for their upcoming ELA PAT, with a focus on practicing their written skills first, and then moving into answering multiple choice questions. Practice prompts and practice multiple choice questions will be available on Google Classroom and/or sent home with students over the following weeks. Mrs. M. Zimmer - In math, we will be starting our second last unit this week. We should finish with some time for review before PATs! We will do both multiple choice, and non-calculator portion practice. :) Mrs. Walker - Grade 9s are finishing up their last unit in Science on Electrical Principles. They will have a week of review time in class for the PAT, but should start their own review at home before then. The Science PAT is their last test on June 25th. Mrs. Thomas - In Home-Ec, the grade 9s have (mostly) made the switch over to cooking, we still have a few sewing projects on the go that kids are working on when they have some time. Their big project is working on designing food truck businesses, and in a few weeks they will be preparing dishes from their menus for each other and a small panel of judges. They are looking forward to it!

Grade 10 (Alison/Cristin): Reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Math is going well. Industrial Arts and Home Ec are great.

Grade 11 (Teena Kasha): Mrs. Walker - In Physics, Grade 11s are learning about Nuclear and Atomic Physics. We're on track to have a few days of review in class and a field test to get ready for the diploma on June 24th.

Grade 12 (Jeanni Hoermann): Mrs. Walker - In Bio, Grade 12s are just about to start their last unit on Population Dynamics. We're on track to have a week of review and a field test to get ready for the diploma on June 20th. In Physics, Grade 12s are learning about Nuclear and Atomic Physics. We're also on track to have a few days of review in class and a field test to get ready for the diploma on June 24th. Mr. Pastachak - In Social 30, we have been at the challenges of imposing liberalism. Specifically the Indian Act and the White Paper. Students also looked at various forms of democracy (Republican, Parliamentary, Proportional, and Direct). Moving forward we will continue to look at liberalism in practice in Canada. Specifically, the War Measures Act and the Canadian Charter. We are gearing up to a Source Analysis essay at the end of the month as another practice for their diploma part A.
