Newly Renovated Beaver Lodge
Thank you to James Landenberger and Michael Newkirk for their design and hard work on this beautiful structure.
Dear Families,
Always as August rolls around, the rituals of getting ready for school begin in earnest. Teachers are circling back to their room, I’m in the midst of the annual administrative retreat, and pre-week officially starts for all ACSD staff and teachers, August 20.
New staff this year: Another big change in staffing this year is that Samantha Farrell-Schmitt is moving into a math specialist position at Bridport! They are so lucky to have her AND we will miss her so. She has been such an important part of the school these past two years. Thankfully, Rachel Chapman is stepping into Samantha’s role and has begun training with her this week. Rachel’s position is full time and she will be serving as health designee as well. We are also welcoming Elana Sadlon as a paraprofessional who is taking on a role similar to that of Shannon’s, including that of back-up health designee. Kathleen Marinelli will be the nutrition specialist. She is coming to us from Salisbury, bringing great experience and energy to the position.
Meals and bus information: I will be sending out a second newsletter the week before school starts which will include meal ordering and service information (we’re changing our processes), links to the bus routes and pickup routines. Once again this year all school meals served to youth (up to age 18) will be FREE.
Reminder - All students (K-5) need the following:
Sneakers - especially for P.E Tuesdays and Fridays to insure safe movement
A complete change of clothes (yes, for all grades!) including socks and underwear (to be kept in their backpack) - various spills and muddy play are part of school life
Rain boots, rain pants and rain jackets
Snow boots, snow pants, winter coat, hat, mittens or gloves
We do have extra clothes on hand, but it is often much more comfortable for students to have their own gear/clothing and changing takes much less time.
Please email me cjohnston@acsdvt.org or call if you have any questions (802-545-3301),
Enjoy the rest of the summer! Christina

Warm Season Health Office Reminders
Now that the temperatures are rising, I want to send some care reminders out for families to keep in mind.
Sunscreen
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure
Choose sunscreen that is at least 30 SPF
Broad spectrum sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB radiation
Reapply every 2 hours or per the bottle instructions
For younger students, adults should assist with application
Bug Spray
Use the appropriate and recommended amount per spray bottle
Adults at home or school should apply bug spray - students can not spray themselves
If using sunscreen, let sunscreen dry for 20 minutes before applying bug spray
Bug sprays should contain no more than 30% DEET when used on children
Ticks
Recommended to do daily tick checks done at home
Avoid brush, tall grass and leaves
Wear tall socks and pants for when in tick habitats
Spray bug spray with Deet on the legs
If you find a tick on a student, an adult should remove it with teasers right way
General Reminders
Stay Hydrated
Wear hats to protect from the sun
Stay healthy and have fun with the outdoors while taking care of ourselves!
If you have any questions please reach out!
Best,
Dani Girard, MSN RN

We’re raising pay for substitutes! Apply now!
Substitute teachers are crucial for our students, staff, staff, and schools! We are increasing our daily substitute teaching rate to $160/day for unlicensed subs and $200/day for licensed subs. This change begins on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 when students return from winter break. This flat rate replaces our sliding rate of pay for subs depending on the number of days worked.
To apply, you can email your interest to HR@acsdvt.org with "Substitute Position" in the subject line. You can also visit this listing on school spring.
