What is Notebook LM? What is Notebook LM?

NotebookLM is a research and note-taking tool developed by Google. Unlike standard AI chatbots, like Gemini or ChatGPT, that pull information from the entire internet or what it has been trained, NotebookLM is designed to be grounded specifically in the documents you provide.

When you create a notebook, you upload Sources.

These can be PDFs, Google Docs, website URLs, YouTube transcripts, or even audio files.

Because it is restricted to your sources, it is much less likely to make up facts. If the information isn't in your files, it will simply tell you it doesn't know.

You make your Library of Alexandria, but you can't lose this one.

What are some of the features in the Studio? What are some of the features in the Studio?

The Studio is a dedicated workspace where your uploaded sources are transformed into structured, multimedia outputs. While the main interface focuses on chatting with your documents, the Studio is designed for content generation and active learning.

  • Audio Overviews (Interactive): Generates a podcast between two AI hosts. You can now click "Join" to interrupt them with your microphone to ask for clarifications or analogies in real-time.

  • Video Overviews: Automatically creates "whiteboard-style" explainer videos or structured overviews based on your uploaded documents.

  • Visual Assets: Instantly generates branded Slide Decks, Infographics, and Mind Maps that visualize the connections between your sources.

  • Study Tools: Converts source material into interactive Flashcards and Quizzes (with difficulty levels) to test your knowledge.

  • Data Tables: Automatically extracts qualitative information from text and organizes it into structured, quantitative comparison grids.

What are some ways to use it with students? What are some ways to use it with students?

A clean, modern infographic titled "How Teachers Can Use NotebookLM with Students." The design features four vertical white columns on a soft blue gradient background, using NotebookLM’s signature blue and yellow color palette. Column 1: Audio Overviews. Features a blue headphone icon. Text: "Turn class notes into podcast-style Audio Overviews so students can listen while they review, commute, or eat dinner." Column 2: Visual Infographics. Features a blue line graph and bar chart icon. Text: "Generate easy-to-read infographics that break down complex topics for visual learners." Column 3: Study Aids. Features a blue checklist/flashcard icon. Text: "Create flashcards, quizzes, and summaries directly from course materials to support review and test prep." Column 4: Tutor Mode. Features an icon of a human profile with a yellow lightbulb above the head. Text: "Use Tutor Mode so the AI asks probing questions, guides thinking, and helps students discover answers themselves." In the bottom right corner, there is a small logo featuring a lightbulb inside an open book with the letters ".LM".

Provided NotebookLM is open for students to view your created notebooks, many of the features are for users 18+, and no user under 13 can access NotebookLM.

  • Turn notes into Audio Overviews (podcast-style explanations) so students can listen while they review, eat dinner, or do other tasks.
  • Generate easy-to-read infographics that visually break down complex topics, helping visual learners grasp key ideas.
  • Create study aids like flashcards, quizzes, and summaries directly from your course materials to support review and test prep.
  • Use Tutor Mode (Learning Guide) so that instead of just giving answers, the AI asks students probing questions, guides their thinking, and helps them discover the answer themselves.
