🐝 The Hawthorne Hive Weekly Buzz

Greetings Hawthorne Hive Families! 🐝

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the incredible mothers, grandmothers, guardians, and mother figures across our Hawthorne School Community! We celebrate and honor the love, care, strength, and encouragement you pour into our students and families each and every day. We hope your day is filled with joy, appreciation, and special moments with loved ones.

As we continue to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month during the month of May, we remain committed to promoting health, wellness, positivity, and the overall well-being of our students, staff, and families while celebrating the strength and unity of our school community.

As we begin Week 35, I would like to sincerely thank you for the continued love, support, and partnership that make Hawthorne Elementary School such a special place for our students, staff, and families. Your collaboration and involvement continue to help us create meaningful experiences and opportunities for our children to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Last week was truly memorable as we celebrated our amazing teachers and staff during Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week and Nurses Day. The thoughtful gifts, encouraging words, acts of kindness, and generosity shown by our parents, students, PTA, Mr. Barnes, Mrs. Wildy, and community members were deeply appreciated. Thank you for continuously supporting and uplifting our staff as they work tirelessly each day to positively impact the lives of our students.

Thank you as well to everyone who attended our May Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A. It was an amazing turnout, and we truly appreciate your continued support of our school initiatives and community-building events.

A special thank you to all of the parents and family members who attended our final “Coffee in the Garden” session of the school year. Your presence, participation, and continued partnership helped make each gathering meaningful and impactful. These moments of conversation, collaboration, and connection allow us to strengthen relationships between home and school while creating a welcoming space for families to engage with our Hawthorne community

We would also like to recognize and celebrate our student athletes and coaches — Mr. Barnes, Mr. Smith, Ms. Lester, and Ms. Shegog — for an outstanding Flag Football season. Thank you for your dedication, leadership, teamwork, and commitment to providing meaningful opportunities and experiences for our students both on and off the field.

We have another exciting week ahead at Hawthorne! On Tuesday, students will enjoy our highly anticipated “Kids Rule the School” experience. On Thursday, we will host Career Day, where students will have the opportunity to learn from professionals across various career fields and begin exploring future aspirations and possibilities. We will conclude the week on Friday with our exciting Field Day celebration filled with fun, teamwork, physical activity, and school spirit.

Additionally, we invite all members of our school and surrounding community to support our upcoming Blood Drive on Saturday, May 16, from 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Donating blood is a meaningful way to support and serve others, and we appreciate your consideration and participation in this important community event.

Donations for the Hornet Hustle are still being accepted! We’ve raised an incredible $25,396, reaching 84% of our $30,000 goal—we are only $4,604 away! We are so close and can reach our goal with your support. With just a little more help, we can cross the finish line. Every dollar truly makes a difference, and any amount is appreciated. There’s still time to give—please use the link below to donate and help us finish strong!

MAY SEL FOCUS

As we wrap up the school year, we want to share a brief update on the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) experiences your children have participated in throughout the year.

Our school counselors have provided students with age-appropriate SEL lessons focused on building important life skills that support both learning and well-being. These lessons included developing positive mindsets, setting goals, understanding and managing emotions, and showing empathy toward others. Students also learned strategies for problem-solving, building healthy friendships, and contributing to a safe and supportive school environment.

In addition, students explored personal safety topics, including understanding boundaries and knowing how to seek help from trusted adults. A strong emphasis was placed on helping students build confidence, recognize their strengths, and develop a positive sense of self. These lessons are designed to support the whole child and help students make thoughtful, responsible decisions both in and out of the classroom. It has been a wonderful year of growth, and our students are looking forward to a well-deserved break.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to promote emotional well-being and success for every child.

Attention 5th Grade Parents

SOME INFO FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT THE HENDERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL PTSA

What is the HMS PTSA?

The Parent, Teacher, Student Association is very active at Henderson making sure that we are keeping families informed, involved and plugged in with teachers and the administration. We also invite students to attend and have a voice in our general meetings.

How do I stay in the know?

There’s a number of ways to plug in now.

  1. The HMS website here. Ms Jones, our wonderful media specialist, keeps it up-to-date weekly.

  2. You can subscribe to our PTSA newsletter here which goes out every Sunday evening during the school year keeping you updated about the weeks ahead including a calendar, events, and info about sports and club meetings. While you're on the PTSA website, look around. Lots of info for parents about HMS!

  3. The Henderson Parents Facebook page is pretty active and a good way to ask other parents questions. If you have questions about classes and academics, we always recommend you contact the school directly.

  4. The Spanish speaking community of HMS families use the Padres de Henderson WhatsApp Group to communicate and HMS info is shared there as well.

How do I get involved?

We’re so glad you’re interested in getting involved!

The easiest place to start is by completing our General Volunteer Form so we can reach out when specific needs arise at the school.

You can also explore open PTSA board positions for the 2026 - 2027 school year as we work to fully staff our committees and share responsibilities in a way that feels manageable for everyone.

If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference at your student’s school, this is your moment. Our middle schoolers may not say it out loud, but your presence means everything. These are the critical years for us to lean in.

If you’re interested in supporting the HMS Foundation, which helps fund needs beyond the district budget, you can learn more about ways to give and get involved on the Foundation website.

Not sure where you’d be the best fit? Email communications@hmsptsa.org and tell us a little about your interests. We’d love to connect you with the right opportunity.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at HMS in the fall!

Thank you!

The drop-off times in front of the school are below:

7:00 am

MORNING INTERVENTIONS & EXTENTIONS TIME DAILY - 7:15 am

Tardy bell - 7:45 am

Morning announcements begin at 7:45 am

Car riders:: When picking students up, parents should have the Hawthorne ES Car Rider Tag visible in their car. If the Car Rider Tag is not visible, parents are required to park, come into the building and provide Identification. Thank you for your patience as we simply want to keep your students' safe.

The pick-up times for dismissal are below:

Bus riders-2:25:pm; Car riders 2:35 pm (front of building after buses) & walkers (Side door)

Walker Dismissal Protocol Update
The dismissal process for the Walker group is being slightly adjusted to ensure a smoother and more secure experience. Students will continue to dismiss from the side door; however, we will now be implementing a numbered tag system.
Each walker will be assigned a unique number. Parents or guardians must walk to the designated walker door and visibly display their child’s assigned number. This number will correspond to the student’s walker tag, which will be attached to their backpack.
For safety and accountability, students will only be released once the matching number is presented at the door.

Attendance & Dismissal Procedures Update

To ensure accurate attendance records and to maintain a safe and orderly school environment, we are updating our arrival and dismissal procedures:

  • Late Arrival: Students arriving after 7:45 AM must be checked in by a parent/guardian inside the school office.

  • Early Check-Out: If a student needs to leave school early, parents/guardians must come into the building to sign the student out prior to the start of dismissal.

These updates are in place to support accurate attendance documentation. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to helping us ensure that your students are safe during arrival and dismissal from school. 😊Thank you!
