Our Learning Community...

Happy New Year! We hope you and your family enjoyed a restful and joyful winter break. As we welcomed students back to school last week, we were excited to begin a new year of learning, growth, and connection.

January brings a fresh start, new goals, new opportunities, and renewed energy in our classrooms. Our teachers and staff have been busy preparing engaging lessons and activities that build on the progress students have already made while inspiring curiosity and confidence. We look forward to supporting every learner as they continue to develop academically, socially, and emotionally.

Families should have received an email from our Superintendent, with details about a 1-day strike, occurring on Thursday, February 26th. As a result, all schools in SDUSD will be closed on that day. To make up the instructional minutes lost, March 9th will now be an instructional day for students. We recognize that schedule changes can be challenging for families and we appreciate the time and energy that goes in to adapting.

Labor unions have played a significant role in shaping many of the positive labor practices we value across our country, including fair working conditions, protections for workers, and systems that ultimately benefit students and schools. Most importantly, we want to emphasize that our entire district shares the same vision and commitment to students, especially our students with disabilities. All parties involved care deeply about strengthening special education services, supporting educators, and ensuring students receive what they need to thrive. While there may be different perspectives on how to get there, our goals are aligned and we support all parties as they work together toward solutions that move our district forward. We understand that labor disputes can feel confusing, uncomfortable, and uncertain, please know that the Jones staff are here to support one another, our greater community and most importantly, our students.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need additional support. For more information about the strike, please refer to the resources below.

2026-27 School Program Priorities Survey for Families 2026-27 School Program Priorities Survey for Families

As we begin planning for next school year's budget, we are seeking your input on the needs of our site to guide future budgeting discussions and decisions. Information from this needs assessment will be used to shape budgets and strategies for the 2026-27 school year. All survey responses will be reviewed by the School Site Council, Site Governance Team, and Instructional Leadership Lighthouse Team. The School Site Council will then prioritize needs to finalize the allocation of Title I funds.

Thank you for the time to complete this survey. Your input is greatly appreciated as we consider our budgeting needs for the 2026-27 school year.

Please complete this form by January 16th, 2026: https://forms.gle/KVs8yfDWqse2hEmF8

As we start the new year, we continue to build our physical literacy. We want our students at Jones to be happy, active, and to learn how to make healthy choices. To be active and have fun playing lots of games and sports, there are basic skills we need to learn. We have already been working on throwing, jumping, running, catching, and traveling without bumping into others. These skills help us feel more confident when playing sports or games at recess and when our skills improve, we are more willing to try new activities. With Kindness Week coming up at the end of January, we will focus on teamwork and cooperative games.

Stay active – Coach Jensen

Setting Goals & Resolutions Setting Goals & Resolutions

Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!

Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.

Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.

Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:

  • Choose a cozy time and space to read together

  • Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)

  • Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension

  • Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby

The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
