From the Counseling Team
This school year, in our morning meetings, we have been learning about our emotions, and how to manage/deal or cope with them. Social and Emotional Learning or SEL is part of everyday life at school, at home and in the community. SEL teaches 5 core skills: self-awareness, self- management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. As you may have noticed in our morning broadcast, in the 5 weeks leading up to April vacation, we are highlighting each of these core skills for a whole week.
Self-Awareness is our ability and skills that help us recognize our own emotions/feelings, thoughts, and values and how they affect/influence/change our behavior.
Self-Management is our ability to successfully regulate or handle our own feelings, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.
Social Awareness is our ability to understand the perspective of or point of view of others and empathize with them.
Relationship Skills are our ability to communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate and play with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, handle conflict, and seek and offer help when needed.
Responsible decision-making skills are our ability to make helpful choices about our personal behavior and social interactions based on rules, safety concerns and the consideration of the well-being of oneself and others.

Girls on the Run
Our Girls On the Run team is off to a great start -- we are working through a 10 week program which creatively integrates running and physical movement while building positive social/emotional skills. As a team we are working towards the big goal of completing the celebratory 5K in June!
New Elementary Report Card
The APS elementary report cards have been updated and look amazing. Report cards for trimester 2 will be emailed home on Friday, March 28 after 3:00pm. PDF's will be attached to an email. Report cards will also be archived in the Parent Portal on PowerSchool. To access the report card, simply log in to PowerSchool and click on "Student Reports" on the left-hand side. For optimal viewing, we recommend using a browser, as the mobile app may not display the report cards properly.
Science Fair
Congratulations to Ms. C. and the 53 students who participated in this year's Science Fair. It was so great to see so many creative projects that students spent time preparing.
MCAS
MCAS testing begins next week for students in 3rd and 4th grade. Students will take the ELA component of the test on April 2 and 8. Math MCAS will take place on May 6 and 13.
It is important that all students are present and on time for these tests. Additionally, they should try to get a good nightβs sleep and have a good breakfast the day of testing. Students and teachers have worked very hard to prepare for the MCAS tests. We are confident that all our students will try their best and do well!
2025-2026 Planning
With only 53 days of school left before summer vacation, we are starting to prepare for the 2025-2026 school year. Forms will be going home on Friday, March 28 for all students in grades K, 1, 2, and 3. These forms give families an opportunity to give valuable information to assist our teams in class placement for the fall. It is a thoughtful and complex process.
Please understand that parent input is one of numerous factors that we will consider when placing students into classes. Also, please realize that we are not soliciting requests for specific teachers. Completed forms must be returned to the office no later than April 17, 2025.
From the Nurse
Itβs nice to see that spring is finally here! With the warmer weather, please continue to send your kiddos in with water. As it heats up and they are running around for recess and PE, theyβll need to stay hydrated.
Please note that even though the cold and flu season is coming to an end, we are continuing to see some cases of the flu and various viruses. Just a reminder to keep your kiddos home when they are sick. They can return to school when symptoms are improving and they are fever/vomiting/diarrhea free for 24 hours. Please feel free to always contact the nurseβs office with any questions at 413-821-9368.
Thank you and Happy Spring!

Phelps Attendance Update - End of March
We know that showing up matters, and that when students show up to learn, they are more likely to be able to stay on-track, stay engaged and meet major educational milestones.
We are at 95.1% average daily attendance as a school.
What you can do...Work with your child and his/her teacher to develop your childβs strong attendance. Talk about it β sing about it β make it an adventure!
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Share ideas with other parents for getting to school on time.
- If you are concerned your child may have a contagious illness, call your school or health care provider for advice.
- Ask family members or neighbors for assistance if you need help.
- Try to schedule non-urgent medical appointments and extended trips when school is not in session.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to the counselor, teacher, your doctor or other parents for advice.
