Blacklick Bulletin
Week of February 16, 2026 - Issue #27
Message from Principal Groves
Dear Blacklick Families,
As a reminder, there is no school for students on Monday, February 16. We will welcome students back to the building on Tuesday, February 17.
THANK YOU to all of our families that donated items and/or time for our Valentines Day celebrations last Thursday. Our students had a wonderful time thanks to all of you! We truly appreciate all of your support.
Our 3rd and 4th graders will attend a presentation on Tuesday to promote the Tressel Fitness Challenge. Roy Hall Jr. (former OSU and NFL football player) will be at Blacklick to talk with our students!
Our 5th graders will be traveling to BizTown on Tuesday! Junior Achievement BizTown is an interactive, hands-on educational program designed for elementary and middle school students (typically grades 4–6). It teaches kids how a real economy works by letting them run a simulated town for a day. Our 5th graders have been working very hard to prepare and are really looking forward to this experience. This is always a favorite field trip for our students!
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at 614-759-5100 or by email at grovesk@gjps.org.
Respectfully,
Kristen Groves

Related Arts Update! 2nd Grade
PE in 2nd Grade
Our 2nd graders have been hard at work on their hockey skills! Students are learning the basic skills of stick handling, passing, and spacing through a variety of hockey games and activities.
Library in 2nd Grade
Second graders have been reading some of the award winners from the Youth Media Awards but we will soon be moving into a unit on Google Docs where they will learn how to copy, cut, and paste. We talk about how these are lifelong skills that might take a bit of practice at first!
Music in 2nd Grade
2nd Graders are getting an introduction to ukulele playing! We are learning the “Pout Pout Fish” song on the ukulele to go with the book Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen.
Art in 2nd Grade
In 2nd grade students are finishing up their beautiful clay coil pots! Students were introduced to the skill set of “score, slip and smooth” in order to securely attach two separate pieces of clay together. This is also their first time using glaze, which is a liquid glass that coats the clay projects to make them smooth and shiny! Students have worked very hard on their pots, and are very excited to bring them home!

Blacklick Staff Favorite Things
A list has been complied of the Blacklick staff's favorite things. It is important to understand the teachers are not asking for gifts. We know that many parents might want to get their child's teacher a gift and this list is to help you select something the teacher would like. Please do not feel obligated to buy a gift for your child's teachers/staff members. A thoughtful note from you and/or your child at any time of the year is appreciated just as much or more as any gift.
Staff Shout Out!
Dear Parents,
We invite you to share a few kind words or a heartfelt message for your child's teacher or Blacklick staff member. Our staff works tirelessly to provide the best education and support for our children, and your appreciation can make a significant impact on their day.
Please take a moment to express your gratitude, share a positive experience, or simply say thank you.
Your messages will be shared with the staff member to brighten their day and acknowledge their hard work and dedication.
Thank you for your participation and support!

GJPS District Updates - See Below!
Kindergarten Enrollment Updates (2026-2027)
Kindergarten enrollment dates have historically varied across Ohio, with districts choosing either an August 1 or September 30 age cutoff. At Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, we have traditionally used an August 1 cutoff for kindergarten eligibility.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, new state legislation creates a single, statewide standard. Children must be five years old on or before the first day of instruction in the enrolling district to be eligible for kindergarten. For GJPS, this means children must be five years old on or before August 20, 2026 to be eligible for kindergarten registration.
Registration for new GJPS kindergarten students for the 2026-27 school year begins February 23, 2026.
