Message from Nicole Pease, Principal

Good afternoon DCS families, I want to share two comments about our students that should make you very proud. After his presentation last Friday, Marty Kelley commented about how well behaved our students were. Then, over the weekend, I heard from Brad Bates who donated the cross country skis and helped our students begin to learn. He shared the following "I am still smiling, thinking about the hour we spent with your amazing students. You and your team have created a special culture on that campus. The students are so enthusiastic, curious, and kind."

Have a lovely weekend! Nicole

Kind Kindergarten and First Grade

Kindergarteners and first graders have been learning about what an author's purpose is for writing. The first reason is to inform the reader by giving facts (nonfiction). The second reason is to entertain the reader (narrative). We'll talk about the third reason soon (to persuade). For now, we've been reading Tacky the Penguin and the Emperor's Egg as examples of the first two reasons for writing. When reading at home you can ask your child, "What do you think the author's purpose is for writing this book?"

Sweet 2nd Grade

It's feeling cold outside our classroom! Second graders made shape penguins to review geometry before our upcoming NWEA testing. The body is a trapezoid, hexagon bellies, and triangle flippers! The students did a great job learning and reviewing their shapes. They are also getting really good at using the standard algorithm for addition even with renaming. They got to "write the gym" and had a great time practicing adding while getting some good exercise!

Each student is working on a timeline of six major events of their lives. Come see them displayed in our hallway! Also, we are just beginning informative writing, so we'll get really good at completing a top-down web to organize our information before we write paragraphs.

Thinking in 3rd Grade

Our terrific Third Graders have been working hard to learn new concepts and tasks. For Social/Emotional Learning, they focused on “Courage.” They continue to talk about what it means to be courageous/brave. The children played games that required them to be courageous, cooperative, and kind to each other. Also, the class learned about a Growth Mindset versus a Fixed Mindset. They are practicing opening up to new experiences and challenges in learning and play.

During Language Arts, the children enjoyed participating in a My Father’s Dragon book study to work on story mapping, story elements, and vocabulary. For Math, the class started our unit on solving two-step word problems. Breaking apart the word problem into two steps can be tricky. We learned strategies to read through the problem, noticing the steps and methods to solve for the answer. The children worked on writing their paragraphs about their trip to the Post Office and General Store using the Writing Process, combining Social Studies with Writing.

The Third Graders loved listening to Marty Kelly share his experience as a writer, illustrator, and artist. His advice that one must practice new skills repeatedly stood out for them!

Fun in 4th and 5th Grade

January is a busy and yet fun time around here. We have begun the winter NWEA testing and each child is working hard to do their personal best. On the other hand, we have been seeing ways to play lots of learning games and collaborative challenges. They earned a scavenger hunt this week that involved having to work with teammates to solve clues in order to find the prize at the end of the hunt.

4th graders are reading a unit on mythology. Along with reading the stories that are new to many of the students, we have been using the passages as ways to compare and contrast characters and to write summaries.

5th grade is deep into our study of the Revolutionary War. They are working on a long term project that will help them learn about the major events of this time, look at the variety of perspectives of the key characters and participate in discussions about how our country got its start.

This week we looked at Pikachu by Atsuko Nishida, Moondancer by Jean Arp, Picasso’s Three Musicians, The Sorrows of the King by Henri Matisse, and Romare Bearden’s Jammin at the Savoy. We talked about sources for ideas, contrast, focus, background, midground, and foreground. Students worked with these concepts as they created beautiful collages using paper they prepared with paint.

I look forward to our sculpture work when I return for the week of March 13th.

Thank you for supporting creativity!
