Chapel Shout Out!
We would like to recognize Pippa Chandler for the way she lives out the value of Faith through her kindness, selflessness, and willingness to serve others.
Pippa consistently leads by example. Recently, when we were short on lockers, she gave up her own locker without hesitation so that another student could have one. She didn’t need to be asked or encouraged - she simply saw someone who needed help and willingly put their needs before her own. This same spirit of kindness and service can be seen throughout her school day. She is respectful and reverent during chapel, treats God’s house with respect, and is mindful of the learning environment around her as she moves through the halls. When she sees someone who needs help, she is quick to step in, and she is always willing to lend a helping hand to her classmates and her teachers.
What makes Pippa so special is that her kindness isn't something she does for recognition. She quietly and consistently looks for ways to serve others. In doing so, she demonstrates what it means to put faith into action and to live out the kind of selfless love and service that is at the heart of our St. Luke's community.
We are so grateful for the example Pippa sets for others and the way she helps make St. Luke’s a kinder, more caring community.

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
Mathematics
Focus for Next Week: We will continue rounding and estimation.
Learning Objectives:
Students will:
Round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand.
Estimate sums and differences.
Add and subtract larger numbers accurately.
Decide when an estimate or an exact answer is needed.
Academic Vocabulary:
Round • Estimate • Sum • Difference • Exact Answer
Home Support:
Practice rounding in everyday situations: Ask your child to round prices, distances, populations, or quantities to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000. For example, “A store has 2,347 items. About how many is that to the nearest hundred?”
Play an estimation game: When shopping, cooking, or planning a trip, have your child estimate totals before finding the exact answer. Then compare the estimate with the actual amount.
Practice adding and subtracting larger numbers: Give your child real-life problems involving money, distances, scores, or quantities. Encourage them to line up numbers carefully and check their work.
Ask “estimate or exact?”: Present everyday situations and ask your child whether an estimate or an exact answer would be more useful. For example, “Do we need to know the exact cost of our groceries, or is an estimate enough to know if we have enough money?”
English Language Arts & Reading
Focus for Next Week:
Next week in reading, we will learn how to make inferences about a text. We will use our knowledge to read a ghost story and make inferences about the characters and plot. In writing, we will continue to practice writing paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences. We will take a paragraph writing assessment on Thursday, October 1. Lastly, we will learn how to spell words with the trigraphs (three letters spelling one sound) igh, tch, and dge.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:
Use background knowledge and text evidence to make an inference about a text.
Write paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences.
Spell words with the trigraphs igh, tch, and dge.
Home Support:
At home, you can support your child’s inferencing skills by asking deeper questions about any stories they encounter (books, tv shows, movies, etc.). Questions such as “what do you think the character is feeling?” and “what do you think will happen next?” help make skills stick.
Our new spelling list is available at our homework link for your reference. The next spelling test will be Thursday, October 8.
Social Studies
Focus of the Week: Hispanic Heritage Month
We will continue learning about heritage, culture, and the contributions of Hispanic and Latino people. Students will explore the lives of notable individuals, including Justice Sonia Sotomayor and scientist Dr. Mario J. Molina.
Learning Objectives:
Students will:
Explain what heritage means.
Learn about Hispanic and Latino cultures and experiences.
Identify the contributions of notable Hispanic and Latino individuals.
Explain how their contributions have impacted our world.
Academic Vocabulary: Heritage • Culture • Contribution • Accomplishment • Notable
Home Support:
Ask your child to share something they learned about a notable Hispanic or Latino individual. Families can also talk about their own heritage, traditions, and culture and how these shape who we are.
Science
What is Happening in Science/STEM?
Forces and Motion is still the focus in fourth grade. Students will learn different forms of energy through words, hand gestures and objects to name the energy that is being shown when objects collide. Students will apply their knowledge of different energy models through scientific symbols to show how energy can transform from one type of energy to another, then begin building their energy vocabulary pockets to hold their new academic language.
Academic Language We Are Using This Week:
energy, force, speed, collision, collide, transfer, potential, kinetic, mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, sound and chemical, energy transformation
