Lakeshore Happenings

October was a busy month at Lakeshore, and we have lots to celebrate! First, thank you to all the families who took the time to join us for parent-teacher conferences. We value the opportunity to connect with you and work together to support your child’s growth and success. If you weren’t able to attend, please reach out to your child’s teacher to find a time to connect.

A special thank-you to our amazing PTO for putting on such a great Fall Fest this past week! It was so much fun seeing all the kids dressed up and families enjoying the games, food trucks, and trunk-or-treating. We appreciate all the time and effort our PTO and volunteers put into making this such a fun event for our Lakeshore community!

Finally, we hosted an Outdoor Education Open House at Lakeshore this past Thursday. We’re excited to continue growing our outdoor education focus and sharing the opportunities it provides for our students. If you know a family interested in learning more about our Outdoor Kindergarten program or Lakeshore’s outdoor education focus, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to share more about what makes our school special!

Thank you for being such an important part of our Lakeshore community. We’re grateful for your continued support!

Please check your spam folder in your email

We have had a number of parents report that they have not been getting emails from their child's teacher or other Lakeshore communication. Upon further investigation, they have found that teacher/school emails have been going to their spam folder. Please double check your spam folders from time to time to make sure you are not missing any important school communication. Thank you!

We are loving this beautiful weather in discovery!

We wrapped up our water unit with lessons about water moving through leaves, the science behind a splash, and creating water filters.

We have begun our second unit about protecting the environment! Kindergarten and first grade students completed a relay race where they learned which actions make the earth happy and which ones make the earth sad. They also learned about small actions they can do to help, including turning off the water, lights, and TV when they are done using them.

Second and third graders have been learning about their carbon footprints. They learned what leaves behind a heavy carbon footprint and what activities produce a lighter footprint. We headed outside to draw these actions with sidewalk chalk!

Fourth and fifth grade students began the unit by learning about renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy. We completed a simulation to show how nonrenewable resources, such as coal, will run out over time while renewable resources, such as sunlight, will not. Students did a fantastic job with this activity!

Please make sure to know your student's discovery day. Close toed footwear is important, as we often walk the trails and go into the wood lots. Enjoy these photos of our first week!

Hearing & Vision Screenings

Wednesday & Thursday, November 11-12

A child's ability to see and hear are vital to learning. Screenings are an important tool to obtain information about hearing and vision loss and can contribute to a child's overall health and well-being. The Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH) Hearing and Vision Team screens children according to the Michigan Public Health Code and Revised School Code. The Hearing and Vision Screening takes place for the following grades during the school day.

Hearing - Nov. 11

Grades: K, 2, and 4

Vision - Nov. 12

Grades: 1, 3, 5, and 7

Preschool will not participate in the screening process at this time, but may have a date TBD in the spring.

Opting Out of Hearing & Vision Screening

If you do NOT wish to have your child screened through this process or believe it is unnecessary because your child is currently under the care of a medical professional for hearing or vision issues, please email the office at dureyt@westottawa.net with student's name and grade.

Results

Parents will only be contacted in the event there is an issue with your child's hearing or vision. You will receive a note in your child's folder and a letter by mail with more information and action steps.

🚗 Pick Up Info 🚗 Pick Up Info

🆕 Early Pick Up

If you need to pick up your child before the end of the school day, please plan to do so by 3:15 p.m. After 3:15, our parking lot begins to get busy as we prepare for dismissal, so we ask that you wait until our regular dismissal at 3:48 p.m.

Whenever possible, please notify the office of an early pick-up as soon as you can so we have time to call for your child and have them ready when you arrive.

Transportation Changes

If your child needs to go home a different way other than what is normally scheduled, please notify the office by phone or email: dureyt@westottawa.net and/or corpebr@westottawa.net

You may also contact us through the TalkingPoints app/text thread!

Please contact the office by 2:45 pm if at all possible. We send notes to each classroom for any changes made throughout the day.

👉 We could especially benefit from more 🛟life savers, 🍬peppermints,

For anyone who would still like to donate to our "School Encouragemint" supply (little treats to be distributed, especially to teachers but sometimes students as the need for encouragement arises - often daily 😉) Click here to view our Amazon Wishlist. When Should Your Child Stay Home?

We know that children get sick, and we want students to stay home when they truly need to. Please keep your child home if they have a fever over 100°F, vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours, pink eye/crusty eyes, or an infectious or contagious illness. Students should also stay home as directed by a health care provider.

At the same time, every day of school matters. Missing just 1 day every 2 weeks adds up to about 20 missed days in a school year. Missing 1 day per week adds up to 40 days, and missing 2 days per week adds up to 80 days. Those missed days can have a significant impact on learning and school success.

Thank you for partnering with us to help your child grow, learn, and succeed!
