A Celebration of Music: Parker’s 46th Annual Suzuki Workshop 🎻🎶 A Celebration of Music: Parker’s 46th Annual Suzuki Workshop 🎻🎶

This past week, Parker Elementary was alive with the sound of music as we celebrated our 46th Annual Suzuki Workshop—a tradition that has thrived since 1975 and remains the longest-running annual event in Parker’s history.

From students rehearsing in every available space—offices, PLC rooms, and even a closet-turned-practice room—to the energy and excitement of our young musicians, every moment of the workshop was a testament to the Soul of Suzuki and the strength of our Parker community.

Kicking Off with Jazz 🎷

The week began with an electrifying Jazz Ensemble concert, featuring incredible performances by Mike Wheeler, David Caceres, David Craig, and Tim Solook. Their artistry and passion set the perfect tone for the workshop, inspiring our Magnet students and reinforcing Parker’s excellence in both academics and the arts.

Honoring Our Supporters 🍽

The Workshop Appreciation Dinner brought together our dedicated instructors, volunteers, and families to recognize the collective effort behind this incredible event. It was a night of gratitude, collaboration, and celebration of the work that goes into keeping this tradition alive.

Learning & Growth: Suzuki Workshop Sessions 🎼

Throughout the workshop, nearly 200 Parker Strings students participated in intensive learning sessions led by esteemed Suzuki instructors from across the country. Our students refined their techniques, embraced new challenges, and immersed themselves in the collaborative and nurturing learning environment that Suzuki is known for.

A Grand Finale: Workshop Concert at Westbury Baptist 🎻

The workshop culminated in a breathtaking performance at Westbury Baptist Church, where our students took the stage to showcase their hard work, discipline, and musical growth. We extend our sincere gratitude to Senior Pastor Brandon Webb and the Westbury Baptist community for graciously allowing us to use their space for this grand event.

Recognizing the Many Hands Behind the Workshop

An event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the support and dedication of so many individuals. We are incredibly grateful for everyone who played a role in making this year’s Suzuki Workshop a success.

Daily Headlines: The Sound of Music is taking over Parker Elementary

February is here, a new month and the perfect month for our new Character Education Theme: Kindness

Help us live the concept of kindness with your family by following our focus for every week of the month. We will be talking about the following concepts and focus during morning announcements every week. Kindness means doing nice things for ourselves and others, like speaking nicely, sharing and being a good friend.

Week 1: Self-Kindness-

Self-Kindness- Remember to be kind to yourself. Take time to do things you enjoy like playing, reading, or drawing. Take breaks when you need to rest, say positive things to yourself, and be proud of your accomplishments, big or small.

Week 2- Empathy-

Try to understand how others feel. Putting yourself in their shoes helps you respond with kindness.

Week 3: Be intentional. Share kindness with others.

Random Acts of Kindness Week: February 18-21

Random acts of kindness are unexpected and thoughtful gestures or actions that you do, without expecting anything in return. Make someone else’s day better this week: smile at a stranger, help a friend, hold the door open, say nice things to people or leave a kind note for your teacher, student, family member, or friend.

Week 4- Keep being kind. Practice kindness regularly. When you are kind a lot, it’s like planting seeds of goodness. Your kindness can inspire others to be kind, creating a chain of happy actions that can make the world a better place.

-Susan Carlock, Counselor

This past week, we had the joy of celebrating Ms. Susan Carlock for National School Counseling Week! Ms. Carlock is an invaluable part of our Parker family, providing unwavering support, guidance, and care for our students, staff, and families. Her dedication to ensuring the well-being and success of every child does not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly grateful for all she does.

Thank you, Ms. Carlock, for your compassion, hard work, and commitment to Parker—we appreciate you more than words can express!

I am excited to finally announce that Ms. Ashley Kolb will be stepping into the role of Magnet Coordinator and Campus Testing Coordinator at Parker Elementary! With 17 years of experience in education, all within Houston ISD, Ms. Kolb brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep-rooted connection to our school community.

Ms. Kolb has been a Parker parent for 15 years, with both of her children attending PK-5 as part of the Suzuki Violin program. She is now in her 9th year as a Parker teacher, having taught 1st, 2nd, and 5th grade. Before joining Parker, she spent four years at Neff Elementary, teaching 3rd and 4th grade, and later served as an Elementary Science Curriculum Specialist for HISD, focusing on curriculum writing, professional development, and teacher coaching.

While her title will be changing, Ms. Kolb will finish out the school year as the Teacher of Record for her 5th grade math class. Since math is a tested subject, we want to ensure continuity for our students and avoid any disruptions to their learning. This will allow Ms. Kolb to finish her final year in the classroom strong, while also cross-training and learning her new role. She will officially transition into the Magnet Coordinator and Campus Testing Coordinator position at the start of the new school year.

Holding certifications in all subjects PK-6, ESL, and K-12 Principal, Ms. Kolb is passionate about student success and instructional excellence. And in case you were wondering—yes, she played the violin in middle and high school and still dusts it off from time to time! 🎻

We are excited to have Ms. Kolb in this new leadership role and know that she will continue to make a lasting impact at Parker!

We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Lillie McQuerter to the Parker family as our new Special Education Co-Teacher! With over eight years of experience in education, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for supporting diverse learners.

Ms. McQuerter began her career in education within the special education department and has served in various roles, including In-Class Support Teacher, Resource Teacher, Life Skills Teacher, and Early Childhood Special Education Teacher. Her leadership experience spans positions such as Special Education Department Coordinator, Special Education Chair, Teacher Specialist, At-Risk Coordinator, Dean of Students, and Assistant Principal.

With advanced degrees in Counseling Studies (Psychology) (M.S.), Business Administration (MBA), and Business Administration (BSBA), Ms. McQuerter is dedicated to nurturing both the academic and emotional well-being of our students, ensuring they grow into confident and capable future leaders.

We are excited to have her join our team and look forward to the incredible impact she will make. Please join us in giving Ms. McQuerter a warm #ParkerProud welcome!

We are very excited to welcome Ms. Sjerrie Colburn to the Parker family as our new 2nd Grade Self-Contained Teacher! A native Houstonian, Ms. Colburn has always been passionate about giving back to the community she calls home. While she didn’t attend Houston-area schools herself, she already has a special connection to Parker—her three nephews, Samson, Richard, and Sully, were proud Parker Lions!

Ms. Colburn is a “triple-crown graduate” of Houston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University), where she earned her B.A., M.Ed., and Ed.D. She brings 14 years of experience in education, spanning both private and public schools, including nine years in PK-12 leadership roles.

She is thrilled to join our team and is eager to collaborate with students, staff, and families to uphold Parker’s high standards of excellence in both academics and the arts. Please join us in giving Ms. Colburn a warm #ParkerProud welcome!
