Cluster 1 Newsletter December 16, 2022

Hello Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers!

Hi All!

Progress reports will be posted December 23 to PowerSchool. Teachers are in the process of updating their online gradebooks, so please be patient. Thank you for continuing to support your learner!

Yours,
Cluster 1 Team

English Language Arts Update

Hello from ELA world! Our students have officially finished their first round of book club books, which is reason to celebrate! Students have been working on their cumulative projects focusing on the conflicts and themes of their stories. Projects are due Monday and students might need some help finishing up. Next, we’ll dive into our informational writing unit where students will learn valuable note taking and research skills while digging deeper into a specific topic. Have a great holiday break and we’ll see you on the other side.

Math Update

In math, students have been hard at work calculating and using unit rates. We’ve been using them to find the cost per item when shopping and to calculate speed. Most students will be having their unit rate quiz on Monday. Check Google Classroom for ways to practice! After that, we’ll be diving into percentages. We’ll start with familiar, benchmark percentages (50%, 25%, and 10%). Then, students will move on to calculating more challenging ones using tables and double number lines. To stay in tune with our work in Unit 3, please check out the Unit 3 Family Resource.

Science Update

Have you found your sixth grader randomly dropping objects from a height this week? Well, they may have been testing materials for our egg drop! Students have been using a triple beam balance to track the mass of their egg drop projects as we add to our metric system knowledge. Hopefully we won’t be having scrambled eggs for lunch!

When we return from winter break we will CELL-ibrate the new year with a unit on the building blocks of life… CELLS! Wishing all families a relaxing break and a joyful New Year!

Social Studies Update

This week we delved into the root causes of global inequality. We noticed how the farming and domestication of high yield crops, along with being along specific latitude lines, and having specific animals have created wealth for some countries. This is known as geographic luck! Next week, we’ll be creating posters to explain these facts.
