Monthly Message Monthly Message

As we wrap up the month of March and head into the final trimester of the school year, it’s hard to believe how quickly the time is going. This past month, we had an incredible time celebrating literacy across our school, and it was great to see our students so engaged and excited about reading and learning. As we move into the weeks ahead, we begin MCAS season and continue our important work of planning for the next school year. At the same time, we’re also looking forward to the many fun and memorable activities that come with the end of the school year. It’s always a busy and rewarding time, and we appreciate your continued support as we work together to finish the year strong.

Mr. V.

Thank You Mrs. Solivan Thank You Mrs. Solivan

I am writing to share that Mrs. Solivan, our amazing secretary will be leaving Phelps for another adventure. Her final day at Phelps Elementary School will be April 3.

Mrs. Solivan has been such a special part of our school community. Her warmth, kindness, and genuine care for everyone who walks through our doors have made a lasting impact on students, families, and staff alike. She has been the heart of our front office in so many ways, and she will truly be missed. She has asked that I share the following message with all of you:

🐧🐧🐧

Dear, Phelps staff, students, teachers and families!

As I move on to my next professional journey, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank all of the staff, teachers, students, and families I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with over the years.

Being part of this school community as your secretary has truly meant so much to me, and I have made genuine friendships and shared many meaningful moments that I will always carry with me.

Thank you for your kindness, your support, and for making my time here so special. I’m truly grateful to have been part of this community.

I wish each and every one of you continued success, happiness, and all the very best in the future.

With sincere appreciation,

Mrs. Veronica Solivan

Plans for the 2026-2027 school year are well underway!

We have completed Kindergarten screenings and are starting to shift our focus to class placements. Parent Placement Surveys were sent home in backpacks on Friday, March 27 for students in grades K-3. If you misplaced your form, you can find a copy here.

If you missed Kindergarten screenings, please reach out to the Phelps main office at 413-821-0586.

Literacy Month Recap! Literacy Month Recap!

What a fun month celebrating literacy at Phelps! We welcomed guest readers from the high school, dressed up as our favorite book characters, had our student council read with our kindergarten students, and took part in a schoolwide reading challenge.

Reading is such an important part of our students’ growth. It builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, and opens the door to imagination and new ideas. We encourage families to continue making time for reading at home, as even a few minutes each day can make a big difference.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher Conferences

User uploaded image

We will be having Parent Conferences on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 by appointment. This is an early release day for students. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m. Parent conferences will run from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. These appointments will allow for short parent-teacher conferences to discuss your child's progress.

It is important that you attend these conferences. They represent the best way we have found to let you know how your child is doing in school. We request that you please leave students and siblings at home for a more meaningful and effective conference.

MCAS MCAS

MCAS testing is right around the corner. Students in grades three and four are required to take this state test in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.

It is important that all students are present and on time for these tests. Additionally, they should try to get a good night’s sleep and have a good breakfast the day of testing. Students and teachers have worked very hard to prepare for the MCAS tests. We are confident that all our students will try their best and do well! If you have any questions regarding the MCAS test, please feel free to call me at 413-821-0586.

Playground Communication Board Playground Communication Board

This spring, Phelps School, along with ECC, Sapelli, Granger, Clark, Doering, and School Street Park, will be installing Playground Communication Boards to help make our playgrounds more inclusive. These boards were generously purchased by the Agawam Lions Club as part of their Community Improvement projects, and the DPW will be installing them in the coming weeksβ€”so keep an eye out!

Playground communication boards are designed to promote inclusion and social interaction among children of all abilities. They provide choice, independence, and support collaborative play while helping reduce frustration.

These permanent, weather-resistant signs use symbols and pictures to help children who are nonverbal, have autism, or speak different languages communicate with peers. By offering a simple, visual way to express needsβ€”like β€œslide,” β€œswing,” or β€œmy turn”—the boards help remove barriers to play, leading to more positive interactions and a stronger sense of belonging for all children.

In an effort to provide students with a safe and accessible way to report unsafe/unkind behaviors, the administration and counseling team will visited 3rd and 4th grade classrooms to introduce a new Google Form that students can use to report concerns at school. While we continue to build students’ confidence in seeking out trusted adults, we recognize that many students may not feel comfortable doing so during the school day. This tool offers an additional way for students to share concerns with staff. In addition to introducing the form, the team will engage students in conversations about kindness, the difference between reporting and tattling, and the importance of being an upstander, not a bystander.

Are you starting to clean out closets as spring approaches? Consider donating your gently used items by bagging them and placing them in the donation container located at the start of the Carline Access Road near the little league fields. Phelps receives a donation for every item contributed, and all funds are reinvested directly into our school to support fun upgrades and meaningful experiences for our students. Thank you for helping our community while giving back to our kids!

Spring Into Wellness

With spring finally here, it’s the perfect time for children to get outside, explore, and enjoy the fresh air. Time spent outdoors can do so much for a child’s well-beingβ€”helping them feel happier, less stressed, and more focused. Whether it’s running around at recess, riding a bike, or noticing flowers starting to bloom, these simple moments outside can brighten a child’s day in meaningful ways.

From a counseling perspective, outdoor play also gives children a chance to build confidence, use their imagination, and connect with others. These experiences support not just physical health, but emotional growth as well.

A Moment Through Their Eyes

In this short video, we see how powerful these small outdoor moments can beβ€”from a child’s point of view. What might seem like a quick break or a simple activity to us can feel exciting, freeing, and refreshing to them. The clip reminds us that children experience the world with curiosity and energy, and being outside gives them the space to move, reset, and just be themselves.

As we welcome the new season, we encourage families to find little ways each day to get outside together. Even a few extra minutes in the fresh air can make a big difference!

Attendance Update - End of March Attendance Update - End of March

We are at just below 95% average daily attendance as a school. βœ…

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, our average daily attendance has dipped below 95% for the first time in a couple of years. While this is likely due in part to a challenging flu season, let’s work together to finish strong by making every effort to have students in school each day and bring our attendance back up.

Also, almost 7% of students in grades 1-4 have PERFECT attendance!

Did You Know?

⭐ Missing just two days each month can add up to over three weeks of missed learning in a year.
πŸ“š Students who attend regularly are more likely to read on grade level by third grade.
🌟 Strong attendance habits begin early and set the stage for future success.
😊 Arriving on time helps children start the day feeling confident, calm, and ready to learn.

From the Nurse From the Nurse

It’s nice to see that spring is finally starting to show up around here! As it continues to get warmer, please continue to send your kiddos in with water. As it heats up and they are running around for recess and PE, they’ll need to stay hydrated. Please also continue to send your kiddos dressed in layers as the temperature can change quite a bit during the day with our mornings often cooler than the afternoons.

Please note that even though the cold and flu season is coming to an end, we are still continuing to see some cases of the flu and various viruses. Just a reminder to keep your kiddos home when they are sick. They can return to school when symptoms are improving and they are fever/vomiting/diarrhea free for 24 hours. Please feel free to always contact the nurse’s office with any questions at 413-821-9368. You may also email me at tjasperson@agawamed.org. Happy Spring!
