October 2026
PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Welcome Back!
As we come to the end of September, I want to take a moment to thank our students, families, and staff for a strong start to the school year. The first month of middle school brings new routines, new expectations, new relationships, and plenty of opportunities for students to grow.
We are proud of the way our students are settling into the school year, and we look forward to building momentum throughout October.
A Strong Start Matters
September is about establishing the habits that will help students be successful throughout the year. We continue to emphasize:
Being present and on time
Coming to class prepared
Treating classmates and staff with respect
Taking responsibility for choices
Asking for help when it is needed
Families can make a tremendous difference by talking with their student regularly about how school is going, checking assignments and PowerSchool, and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning.
Learning at RMS
Our teachers have been working hard to establish classroom routines and create learning environments where students are challenged, supported, and engaged.
As we move into October, students will begin seeing longer-term assignments and assessments become a more regular part of their classes. Please encourage your student to use their PowerSchool, Schoology, and other organizational tools to keep track of responsibilities.
A good question to ask at home: "What are you working on this week that you are proud of?"
Belonging & Getting Involved
Middle school is about much more than what happens in the classroom. Clubs, athletics, activities, and school events provide students with opportunities to build friendships, develop leadership skills, and find areas where they can contribute.
Encourage your student to try something new this year!
Looking Ahead to October
As we enter October, please watch for information about:

The RMS PTO will be meeting on the first Tuesday of each month, and we look forward to sharing additional opportunities for families to be involved on our school community!
Important October dates
October 6 - No School for students (Teacher Professional Learning)

A Reminder About Devices
Students have been getting more used to our new expectations regarding cell phones, laptops, and other electronic devices.
Our goal is not simply to restrict technology—it is to make sure technology supports learning rather than becoming a distraction. All Michigan schools are adapting to new statewide expectations concerning wireless devices during instruction.
We appreciate families reinforcing these expectations at home.
Attendance Matters
Every school day provides opportunities to learn, connect, and participate. Being at school consistently helps students keep up academically and remain connected to their teachers and classmates.
If your student is struggling with attendance, engagement, organization, or another aspect of school, please reach out. We would much rather work with a family early than wait for a small concern to become a larger one.
Thank You to Our Families
Thank you for partnering with us. Middle school students are becoming more independent, but they still need consistent support, encouragement, and accountability from the adults around them.
When school and families work together, students benefit. We appreciate everything you do to support your student and our school community.
Have a great October!
