Our Learning Community...

Thank you for joining us for a wonderful Back-to-School Night! It was a joy to see so many of you connecting with teachers, exploring classrooms and learning more about the exciting year ahead. The strong turnout and positive energy truly reflect the supportive community we have at Jones. We are grateful for your partnership!

We are also excited to share a few opportunities this week for families to get more connected and involved. On Thursday evening, our PTA will host a Room Parent Workshop at Maggie's Cafe, where we will share helpful information, resources, and our vision for growing this important team of volunteers who help strengthen the home–school connection. Then on Friday morning, we invite you to join our PTA Executive Board and our counselor, Mrs. Vu, in the auditorium for Cup O’ Collaboration. This is a wonderful way to hear about the exciting things on the horizon for our Jones community, while also meeting and connecting with other families. Finally, Friday evening is the Bike Rodeo! Join our PTA, SANDAG and the San Diego Bike Coalition for a fun free bike skills event. Check out the flyers below for more information!

As a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your loved ones and return rested and ready for another great week of learning.

Activities are varied and can include things like jump ropes, hula hoops, stretching, or other movement–based stations that get students moving, increasing their heart rate, and offering a fun brain boost to start the day.

Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you’re reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!

Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.

Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:

  • Choose a cozy time and space to read together

  • Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)

  • Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension

  • Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby

The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...

Picture Books to Support Children in the Aftermath of Gun Violence Picture Books to Support Children in the Aftermath of Gun Violence

Our hearts are heavy as we reflect on the news of another school shooting this past week. Even when these tragedies happen far from home, they touch us deeply as parents, caregivers, and educators who hold the safety and wellbeing of children at the center of everything we do.

We know that children may have questions or strong emotions after hearing about events like this. Every child responds differently—some may want to talk, some may not mention it at all and others may express their feelings through behavior. Please know we are here to support your child in whatever way they need.

One way you can help children process their emotions is through stories. If you feel your child might benefit, we invite you to take a look at some of the picture books linked below. Books can provide comfort, language for big feelings and a safe way to begin important conversations. We would also recommend titles that foster reassurance, resilience and hope.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us in nurturing both the hearts and minds of our students. Together, we will always work to ensure every child feels safe, cared for and supported.

Top 30 Children's Books About Resilience

One of the most effective ways to teach resilience to children is to surround them with books and stories that promote resilience and whose characters have grit. When we read stories, whether true or fictional, that show others facing their problems and overcoming obstacles, we are helping to develop the same mindset in our children.
