HMS Friday Flyover

HMS FridayFlyover9/18/26

From the Principal From the Principal

Hello Hawks!

Another great week here at Heineman! It has been fun to see the building really settle into the rhythm of the school year, with students fully engaged in classes, activities, and everything happening around school.

Our volleyball teams had another busy week of games, and our cross country runners were back out competing in meets. Itโ€™s always great to see our students representing Heineman, supporting their teammates, and putting in the work outside of the classroom. I also wanted to congratulate our newly elected leaders of our student council! I cannot wait for all the amazing things you do for our building.

As we move further into the year, I continue to be impressed by the energy our students bring each day. There is a lot happening, but our Hawks are doing a great job balancing academics, athletics, activities, and all of the other pieces that make middle school such a busy and exciting time.

Looking forward to another great week ahead. Keep going ALL IN, Hawks!

Go All IN Today!

Executive Function Tip Organization: Box on left states organization means keeping track of assignments, materials, and deadlines so your child can find what they need, know what is due, and be ready for school. Box 2 states At home, your child may forget what homework is due, lose papers, or have trouble packing what they need for the next day. At school, they m ay miss assignments, have a messy binder or backpack, or struggle to keep materials in the right place. Box 3 states try this: Have your student build a simple nightly routine: check assignments in Google Classroom, Schoology or the team homeowkr page, work from a consistent homework spot, and plan tonight for tomorrow. Encourage them to spend 5 minutes writing down what's due, putting papers where they belong, getting their backpack and Chromebook ready for the next day.

schools during the week of October 19-23. How can you help? Take a few minutes to look

through your dresser drawers, closets, and other places where old eyeglasses may be collecting dust.

Weโ€™re collecting:

  • Prescription eyeglasses

Make Your Voice Count! Join Heineman Parent Advisory Committee

Heineman is looking for parents/guardians who want to play an active role in strengthening the school experience for students and families!

Members will meet with school administration three times during the 2026-27 school year to share perspectives and ideas, provide feedback on important topics, and work collaboratively with school leaders to identify ways to increase family engagement and enhance the educational experience for all students. Members will also serve as parent ambassadors, helping strengthen communication and understanding between the school and its families.

To ensure all voices are heard and that everyone has an opportunity to participate and contribute, the Parent Advisory Committee will be limited to 25-30 members who will represent different grade levels and a broad range of perspectives. To support continuity and meaningful participation, committee members are asked to attend all three meetings during the 2026-27 school year.

Satchel Pulse

It is the mission of Huntley Community School District 158 to inspire, challenge and empower all of our students. In order to accomplish this, teachers and staff regularly monitor student progress. Huntley 158 uses Satchel Pulse, a tool that measures our K-12 studentsโ€™ learning in relation to the Illinois Social and Emotional Learning Standards and CASEL competencies. Just as Aimsweb and STAR are screeners for math and literacy, Satchel Pulse serves as a screening tool that monitors a student's growth in developing skills such as self-management, goal-setting, collaboration, and decision-making.

Huntley 158 Family Learning Series (virtual)

Topic: School Anxiety, Avoidance & Refusal: Symptoms and Interventions

Tuesday, September 29, 2026, 6PM - 7PM

Presenter: Jacqueline Rhew, LCPC

Open to all Huntley 158 families

Join via Google Meet

September is Attendance Awareness Month and Huntley 158โ€™s motto is โ€œYour Presence is Your Power.โ€ Every day a student is in school is an opportunity for them to build relationships, learn and access support.

The district is kicking off its first virtual Family Learning Series this year with a presentation by Jacqueline Rhew, a licensed clinical professional counselor, who specializes in school refusal and anxiety in children. The virtual event is free and open to all Huntley 158 families.

Rhewโ€™s presentation will provide parents and caregivers with practical strategies to support their child who may be struggling with school anxiety, avoidance, and school refusal.

She will explore factors that contribute to school avoidance and help parents learn how to recognize early warning signs and unhelpful coping patterns, and better understand how anxiety and avoidance can reinforce one another.

In addition, Rhew will outline specific interventions to help children manage anxiety, increase motivation, set realistic goals, and gradually re-engage in school. Parents will also learn strategies for responding to anxiety without unintentionally reinforcing avoidance, promoting healthy coping and problem-solving, and using communication that builds self-advocacy, confidence, and independence.

If you child will be out due to a vacation, please have them pick up a vacation absence form in the school office. This will help our office properly track attendance . These absences are considered unexcused per District 158 that follows the State of Illinois policies.

Please notify the office...

If your student(s) will be out of school please be sure to contact the attendance line at 847-659-4311.

This helps us accurately track your student's attendance . Thank you.
