From Principal Favero
Dear Wredling Families
As we move into the heart of the school year, it’s more important than ever to support our students with strong routines and structures at home. For our middle schoolers, this means helping them build good habits - without doing the work for them.
Why do homework and practice matter?
Research shows that simply hearing or seeing new information doesn’t guarantee retention - we need to practice. In other words: the brain needs to be worked out. Consistent practice - revisiting, applying, reviewing - helps convert short-term learning into long-term understanding. This is the essence of what psychologists call the “spacing effect,” where spreading study and practice over time leads to stronger memory retention.
When students skip homework or delay reviewing new material, they miss that workout. The result? Content that slips away, concepts that don’t “stick,” gaps that grow. Over time, missing assignments and weak practice routines are strongly linked to lower grades. Simply put homework isn’t just “busy work.” It’s rehearsal. It’s the chance to deepen learning, build confidence and develop skills that will carry into high school and beyond.
How can you support at home?
Establish a dedicated space: Choose a regular sport at home for homework - quiet, well-lit, with minimal distractions (phones/tablets/siblings) and materials (charged chromebook, notebook, pens, pencils, etc).
Set a consistent time to do homework: Routines help the brain switch into “homework mode.” Whether it’s right after a healthy snack, or after a short unwind time, any predictable schedule will help.
Provide a healthy snack & break: A small nutritous snack and a short break can boost focus and mood. Setting a timer can help limit the break and remind us to get back on track!
Encourage independence - but be available. It’s important you don’t do the work for them. Instead, help your child get started, check that they have everything, ask guiding questions (“What’s your plan for this assignment?”), and then step back. This supports responsibility, self-regulation and ownership.
Check-in after completion: Take 5 minutes when they’re done to ask what they learned or found challenging. This reinforces reflection and can help identify when additional support might be needed.
Limit distractions during homework time: Until the assignment is complete, discourage social media scrolling, gaming, or TV. The brain works best with focus and minimal interruptions.
Celebrate completion, not just the grade: Recognize effort, progress, and the habit of doing the work. When students see that homework matters and that you notice their investment, they’re more likely to keep up consistent routines.
PapaNicholas & Write-A-Check Fundraiser
This Monday, November 3rd marks our “2nd Turn In” for PapaNicholas and Write-a-Check fundraiser. Won’t you please consider supporting our PTO, and our Wredling students? When you buy PapaNicholas or Write-a-Check, you truly support every student here at Wredling Middle School!
We are fortunate to have a PTO that is student-focused! They work hard to help make Wredling a great place for all of us. Our Wredling PTO members spend a lot of their time, effort, and money supporting student learning and activities, both in the classroom and out. Each year, they fill teacher grants to buy items such as standing desks, wobble chairs, fitness equipment, books, student incentives, and so much more! This dedicated group of volunteers also provides opportunities to ensure our students who have financial challenges are not excluded from any activity.
Thank you for supporting Wredling!
Proud to be a RedHawk

Important Notes from the Office
WMS 1st Quarter Honor Roll for 25-26 School Year
Our Honor Roll recipients will be recognized Friday, November 7th, with a ribbon, plus a lunchtime treat from our fantastic PTO!
Please note that while we celebrate our students' academic achievements, some children who earned Honor Roll status names do not appear on the published list. This is due to a privacy preference requested by their parents, which includes opting out of name publication in both the Honor Roll list and local newspapers. If you would like to change this preference, you can do so through the Home Access Center or by contacting Student Services.
Congratulations to ALL of our RedHawks who worked hard throughout our 1st quarter of this school year. A special shout-out goes to those who were able to achieve Honor Roll status by earning either all A's or all A's and B's. All A's are on one tab, AB's are on another! See the bottom of the page to switch tabs.

Mark your calendar – Upcoming Opportunity!
We have a special chance coming up for students: the next Wredling Academic Success Session: Saturday School is scheduled for Saturday, November 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
This session is designed for students who have five or more missing assignments (as of the Monday prior) and gives them focused time and support to catch up or get ahead.
7th Grade Social
Our 7th Grade Social is scheduled for Friday, November 7th right after school from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm. In order to make this event successful, we need some parent supervision, about 400 bottles of water and 400 small bags of chips. Please click here to sign up to volunteer to help out at the 7th Grade Social (Friday, 11/7), or to donate snacks or water.
Thank you for helping out!

WMS Drop Zone
The WMS Drop Zone is a place where parents can “drop” off items that a student might have forgotten at home. Our goal is to maximize student learning time and reduce in-class interruption. The Drop Zone should be used infrequently. We want students to learn that there are natural consequences for forgetting items too often.
WMS Drop Zone Guidelines:
Students will not be called out of class for items brought to the school; they need to check the Drop Zone if they have forgotten an item.
All items must be labeled with the student’s name.
Expected Drop Zone items include: a project, instrument, uniform, or lunch. A good rule of thumb is if the item is important to the student’s health or learning.
Note: When phones are being dropped off for a student, they will be held in the main office until the end of the day.
We encourage students to be responsible for bringing everything to school that he/she will need for the day. Packing a backpack the night before can help with organization. The staff of Wredling Middle School is not responsible for any item left in the Drop Zone.
Getting a Message to Your RedHawk
We understand that there may be an occasion when you need to get a message to your child during the school day. Our goal is to reduce interruptions to the school day while also making sure your child is safe. With that in mind, please use these guidelines when you need to get a message to your child:
Plan ahead whenever possible: By letting your child know the schedule for the next day, you should be able to minimize the need for a message.
Sending a message should be infrequent and only done when the information is important to your child’s safety or in an emergency.
Send the message early! When we receive a call from you asking for a message to be sent, we will send it to all of your child’s teachers from that period forward. While we encourage teachers to check their email frequently, we cannot guarantee that your child will receive the message.
If an urgent message must get to your child immediately, we will use our school’s paging system to call into a classroom. Our aim is to do this very rarely so as to not interrupt learning.
Come Share Your Career Journey!
Our 6th-grade Exploring College & Careers class is seeking community members to visit and share about their career journey: what a “day in the life” looks like, what education or training is required, etc. If you are interested in volunteering as a guest speaker at either Thompson Middle School or Wredling Middle School, please complete this Google Form. We would love for our students to hear your story!

Help Us Collect ONE MILLION Pop Tabs!
We’re on a mission to collect one million pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities, and we can’t do it without YOU (and your grandparents, cousins, neighbors, and carpool crew)!
Those tiny aluminum tabs from soda cans, soup lids, or sparkling water may seem small—but when we collect them together, they add up to real support for families with seriously ill children.
Here’s how to pitch in:
Save your pop tabs at home—and ask your grandparents, cousins, friends, and neighbors to do the same!
Bring them to school all year long.
Every tab brings us closer to our 1,000,000-tab goal!
Let's pull together and make a difference!
