Welcome Back Explorers 23-24

MESSAGE FROM THE K8 PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year Explorers and Families!

As a staff we are so prepared for your return and cannot wait to show you what we have in store this school year! The theme for the school year is "Choose Your Adventure" and with that we are hoping to provide as many opportunities as we can for scholars to do so.

These may look like:

  • Providing Information focused around College & Career Readiness
  • Experiences related to industry and technical careers through field trips or guest speakers
  • Creating avenues at school that require scholars to make their own choices
  • Supporting the "dream" or the "journey" a scholar may already be on

As a team our goal is to set up our scholars for success in the next step of their educational journey. Since we are different than the traditional public school model, we are excited to support the 21st century skills needed for the next step in our system and beyond. Friday work is going to look a little different than is has in the past so we can ensure our K5 scholars are prepared for Middle School, and that our Middle School scholars are prepared for the High School+ level! The vision of "Every Scholar Graduates+" is a common thread in our entire system.

Thank you for trusting our team with your scholars! With great anticipation we wait for Tuesday, which is sure to be a "Lovely Day". Have a fabulous month of September and welcome again to the 2023-2024 school year!

Respectfully,

- Elizabeth

CLA Career Chat #1

On Thursday, September 7th we will have our first CLA Career Chat of the school year for several scholars. This time is for our presenter to share the path they took to their current career and time to answer scholar questions. Teachers will be discussing these careers with your scholars and will provide time to create questions they may have about that career.

Back to School Meetings

Thank you all the families who attended our Back to School Meetings! We realize this was a different model than we've done in the past, but you persevered to make it work and we so appreciate it! It was awesome to see our scholars and set goals before we officially begin an awesome school year on Tuesday!

Start & End Times

Please plan to come as close to your scholar’s release time as possible!

Due to feedback from families, we are looking to find ways to alleviate the congestion in the afternoon pick up times. One of the adjustments we have made is to the end of day release times. Younger scholars will be released first and if they have older siblings, they will wait for them to be released before heading to the pick up zones.

  • Start Time: (Monday-Thursday)
    • 9:00am Instruction Begins
    • 8:30am Doors Open & Breakfast Available

  • Dismissal Time: (Monday-Thursday)
    • 3:00pm Kindergarten & 1st grade
    • 3:05pm 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th grade
    • 3:10pm Middle School Centers

We are also asking families who choose to park, to pull through the parking areas in order to avoid backing up against traffic. Thank you for your patience as we tweak and adjust!

Early PM Pick Up/Messages During the School Day

The protocol for picking up students early is as follows:
  • Emergency Notifications- Please contact the office no later than 1:30pm to provide adequate time for the office to contact the classroom
  • Please let your student know the after school plans or how they are being picked up early before they come to school to limit interruptions in the classroom throughout the day

With instruction being important, we are asking that families refrain from pulling scholars out of class early (prior to their release time) so they may interact with content as much as possible. Thank you so much for partnering with us to ensure our Explorers receive the most out of their learning time!!!

College & Career Gear Days

CLA will be focusing on providing experiences for our scholars by exposing them to different careers. We will have community speakers visit throughout the year and share the path they used to get to their career, whether it was through attending college/university, trade school, or through a different path our scholars will get to engage and ask questions!

With that, on the first Thursday of each month, our Explorers and staff will wear College/University gear (logo t-shirts, lanyards, hats, etc) or wear/dress in the Career they hope to be or would like to highlight. Example: if a scholar is hoping to be a firefighter in the future and they have an outfit, they are encouraged to wear it on this day!

Our hope is that we begin encouraging our Explorers think about their future!
