Principal's Post Principal's Post

We had a great week here at DKHS this week. We are just a couple of weeks from the end of marking period 1. M1 counts for 40% of a student’s grade so I want to encourage all of our kids to make a strong effort to set themselves up for success.

Most of our fall sports teams are wrapping up their regular season schedules and moving on to district play soon. Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball Team for their SAC Central Division Championship after defeating Martin on Tuesday. Both teams were undefeated going into that match and our girls came out on top, winning in 4 sets.

We had a pretty good turnout for our first afternoon of parent-teacher conferences. If you missed that we have a second date on Tuesday the 22nd from 2-4 PM and then again from 5-8 PM. The high school uses an open house format with the teachers in their rooms. We would love to see you on Tuesday for conferences.

This week our AP Environmental Science class took a field trip to Grand Haven where they worked on a Grand Valley State University boat doing water quality research alongside GVSU students. Our FFA Chapter is in final preparations for their 4-day 3-night trip next week to Indianapolis for the National Convention at Lucas Oil Stadium. Our trades classes have been busy in our welding booths, and our new chicken coop is on campus and operational with 25 chicks.

Senior Night for the football team, cheerleaders, and band will occur at our last game of the season on the 25th against Parchment. Come and support our Panthers and honor their efforts this fall. This will also be our Pink Out-Cancer Awareness Game.

On Tuesday the 22nd, we will be hosting all 3 SAC Division Champions in a round-robin crossover event. Our girls will play their first match at 5:30 PM.

On Friday, Dr. Wright’s daughter, Kaylee, who is in the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut, presented to our Government classes. In addition to her visit, the Tools To Schools Mobile Field Trip trailer was on campus all day. We had multiple classes go through their exhibits, hear about career opportunities, and try their hand at leveling, framing, and virtual welding. How is that for a day at DKHS? Research on a GVSU boat in Lake Michigan, hands-on trades exposure with the Wayland Training Center, a visit with The Coast Guard, taking care of chickens, and prepping for the National Convention in Indianapolis. That along with all the other amazing things our teachers are doing in their classrooms to help our kids prepare and find success. Proud to be a Panther!!!

This week’s Hogie’s Hero is Alyce Donley. During homecoming week Alyce found a $100 bill in the hall and took it to the office. After attempts to find the owner with no responses, we have awarded that money to Alyce. That would have been very easy for Alyce to put that in her pocket and never say a word. So proud of your character and honesty Alyce. That is DOING A JOB!!

DK Sends 7 Students to Band Day at WMU DK Sends 7 Students to Band Day at WMU

On Saturday, October 12, 2024, DK sent 7 of our DKHS Marching Band members to Band Day at WMU.

Practice began at 8:00a for the 600+ High School Students and WMU Bronco Marching Band members. It was a beautiful rehearsal and day with a pregame concert outside of Miller Auditorium, a march down to the Stadium down Stadium Drive, pregame and kickoff. The high school students do everything alongside the BMB with performances, stand cheers and stand songs. Then the eventful weather pattern (wind, rain & hail, oh my!) came, but they still performed the halftime show they learned that morning, then had to evacuate to the Seelye Center for lightning delays, ending their day with their Postgame Concert inside.

This was a day of experiences for these high schoolers!

Thank you WMU Bronco Marching Band for hosting this day for our high schoolers!

Go Panthers and Go Broncos!

The 26 chickens in Ms. Hebenstreit’s classroom have officially moved into their brand-new coop! The birds love their spacious, permanent home, where they can settle in and thrive. With just a few more weeks to go, these chickens will be fully ready for processing by mid-November. Big things are happening!
