Principal
Happy Fall Grand Prairie families! October is packed with many fun and exciting activities for our students and their families!
During the first half of the month, we will continue our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs September 15th – October 15th. In addition to grade level specific lessons, students had the opportunity to listen to Mrs. Szudy read Antonio’s Amazing Gift, a story inspired by the Disney story Encanto.
Starting on Monday, September 29th and running through Friday, October 3rd, FSP will be hosting our fall book fair. Each student will have a chance to visit the bookfair on the scheduled ELC date. Parents are welcome to “be our guest” and join their children for this book shopping adventure! Additionally, Thursday, October 2nd FSP will keep the fair open late, offering families the chance to come shop from 5:30-7:30pm. We will be joined by many community organizations like FSP, Frankfort Public Library, Navarro Farms, Touch-a-Trucks, therapy dogs, and more that night to make it a very memorable event! We hope to see many of our families there!
Our Kindergarten and First Grade students are excited to go on their first field trips of the year this month. Kindergarten will be visiting Konow's Farm for some fall fun on Monday, October 6th and First Grade will be traveling to Navarro Farm just down the road for some fall fun of their own. 1st grade classroom teachers will provide specific dates and times for each classroom.
On Wednesday, October 21st, the school resource officer, Officer Mineo, will conduct Run, Hide, Fight presentations in PE classes. Grand Prairie will conduct a whole school Run, Hide, Fight practice drill with Officer Mineo on Monday, November 10th.
October is also National Bully Prevention Month! Our social workers will help our young learners understand how to recognize and prevent bullying, as well as what to do if they are ever bullied. Our second of four bully presentations will take place during PE classes on Tuesday, October 14th.
Picture retakes will be on Monday, October 20th. If you would like your child to retake their photo, or if your child was absent, please email your child’s teacher and Mrs. Kojs (skojs@fsd157c.org), our school secretary, so we can ensure that your child is scheduled for retakes on this day!
We are excited to kick off our red ribbon week on October 27th. Stay tuned for more detailed information on optional dress up days during this week for all three FSD157c schools!
Our month will end with our Fall Festivities on October 31st! The student parade will be at 9:30am and parties will take place from 10:00am-10:50am. Students will be dismissed at 11:25 am on October 31st.
A reminder to families that there will be no school on Friday, October 10th for a teacher's institute and Monday, October 14th for Indigenous People Day.
Thank you for your continued partnership. Here’s to a month of curiosity, kindness, and a dash of pixie dust!
Autumn is here and it’s time to cheer! We are so excited to host our annual Fall parade and party for our K-2 students on October 31st! Students will be allowed to wear costumes to school, join us for a Fall parade, and participate in fun fall activities! Our Fall parade will start at 9:30 AM. Parade visitors may enter GP Door #6 starting at 9:00 AM. The parties will begin at approximately 10:00 AM and end at 10:50 AM to allow for student dismissal. Only parent & guardian volunteers may enter the academic wings on October 31st. Friendly reminder, that October 31st is an early release day. Grand Prairie dismissal will occur at 11:25 AM!
Friendly Fall Celebration Information:
Students wishing to wear a costume should come to school dressed in their costume!
Costumes must be school appropriate. This means costumes should not depict any form of violence or gore that may scare other children. This includes make-up depicting blood, etc. Make-up and hair enhancements must be done at home prior to school.
Any covering over the eyes will not be allowed for safety reasons, this includes football or other helmets. Hats will be allowed.
Props – please leave props at home! We would hate anything to get lost or left behind!
If you prefer your child does not participate in the Fall parade and party, please contact your child’s teacher and the office and we will be happy to provide an alternative activity for your little one!
*Preschool parties will be held on October 30th for EC (Lusk) and October 30th for PFA (Kelsey)!

PM Parties: 1:25-2:25
Second Grade
The second graders have been working hard this year using a story structure anchor chart to help identify the characters, setting, problem, and solution in fictional texts! We have also been learning to generate questions before, during, and after reading to help us understand story structure. We’ve been enjoying reading Molly Mac: The Best Friend Bandit by Marty Kelley!
During math, we’ve been having fun measuring classroom objects using rulers, paper clips, and centimeter cubes! We can’t wait to see what else we will learn this year!
First Grade
First Grade Happenings:
The 1st graders are adjusting to the new school year nicely. There are plenty of smiles when they see their friends in the hallways and at recess, especially on the new playgrounds! They are already putting their Second Step lessons to use by looking, listening, having a still body, and a quiet voice when walking through the hallways, lining up for recess and while learning in the classroom. These beginning Second Step lessons give the students strategies for focusing which help them be successful in the classroom.
In the classroom, the students have completed a unit on story elements (characters, setting, and events) in books of fiction and are now learning about the special text features in non-fiction books. In math, they are practicing their math facts to 10 and the strategy of counting on. The boys and girls are also looking forward to our first field trip to Navarro Farm!
It’s great to be a 1st grader!!!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been having a "magical" time learning with our friends! In October we will be starting our "Show and Tell" writing unit where we learn more about labeling our writing and also saying more about our writing to show and tell our readers more details. We are finishing up our first module in math, learning about numbers and counting to 10 and proper number handwriting skills. We are also continuing to practice proper lowercase handwriting skills and singing our secret stories alphabet song. Kindergarteners are really becoming experts at all of our routines and rules for our classrooms and school. We are also coming to the end of 1st quarter and with that brings our Fall party and parade and more fun with our friends!
Preschool
Mrs. Lusk’s Class Newsletter
We had the pleasure of hosting the one and only Jim Gill, a musician and author in our preschool group. He shared his love of music and Banjo playing abilities with our youngest learners. We sang, and danced to different types of songs and finger plays written by Jim Gill. Students were so excited for the adventure of meeting and interacting with Jim Gill. We have been listening to his music within our classroom and for him to be with us in person was a really special experience! He also incorporated some classical music with easy to move to lyrics and introduced the students to other instruments the students may not have heard before like the accordion. It was a very special day for our preschool students they will not soon forget!
