With today being the first day of May, we're now learning about and practicing the value "I am optimistic about today and the future" here at GMS. This is a month full of transitions, events, end of year activities, and finishing up academic work. We've found that students who have a positive and optimistic mindset can finish the school year strong, be proud of their accomplishments, and believe that they can continue to conquer their goals in the future. When I typed "optimism" into the Merriam-Webster dictionary, I learned that this word can mean "a doctrine that this world is the best possible world" and "an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome." When I asked Merriam-Webster to give me the simple definition, I saw "a feeling or belief that good things will happen in the future: a feeling or belief that what you hope for will happen." The synonyms for optimism are hopefulness, brightness, and cheerfulness. I know that it's probably not possible to feel optimistic all the time, but even moments of these feelings can help us all work together to make this world an even better place.

Energy drinks are not allowed on GMS school grounds or at school-sponsored events. Energy drinks include beverages marketed specifically for increased energy, alertness, or performance and often contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants. If a student brings an energy drink to school: The drink will be confiscated The student may be asked to dispose of the beverage Repeated violations may result in parent/guardian contact and a referral to the district nurse We recognize that some students may consume beverages with lower levels of caffeine, such as tea, coffee, and flavored or sparkling drinks with small amounts of caffeine. These beverages are permitted in moderation under the following conditions: They must be in a reasonable size (no oversized or highly concentrated drinks). They must not disrupt learning or student behavior. Staff may restrict consumption if it is impacting a student’s focus, health, or conduct.
