A2 Virtual+ Elementary FAQs

For Prospective Students

A2 Virtual+Elementary FAQsFor Prospective Students

What is A2Virtual+ Elementary?

A2Virtual+ Elementary (A2VE) is a flexible online learning opportunity with regular connection to quality AAPS teachers that includes the following independent and teacher-led components:
  • Grade Level Lessons and Assignments in core content subjects are primarily accessed and completed independently.

  • Two-hours of live instruction will take place daily. During this time students will receive literacy instruction and small group support in additional content areas.

  • Students will receive quality teacher feedback, guidance and will have opportunity for live assistance and instruction.

  • Weekly opportunities to engage in social and emotional learning activities with grade level peers will be available.

Is A2VE right for my child?

Each child and family is different. To assist you in determining whether A2VE is a match for your child there are several things that you can do:

  • Take the Online Readiness Quiz.

  • Review this Q&A document.

  • Visit the Why A2 Virtual+ Elementary? page.

  • Try a sample lesson available on our Learning at a Glance page.

Is there a fully asynchronous elementary learning option?

While literacy instruction is typically offered in a live setting, there is an asynchronous opportunity for students who meet eligibility criteria. There are still weekly live check-in requirements for students who participate in the fully asynchronous option.

Does my child have to commit to A2VE for the full year?

Students are required to commit to a full trimester. Returning to a building placement is based on available space.

Do you teach the Ann Arbor Public Schools curriculum?

Like the Ann Arbor Public Schools, A2VE instruction is aligned with the State Standards. We do not, however, utilize all of the same teaching materials or resources. A2VE students use the Flex Point (formerly Florida Virtual) curriculum. It is supplemented with additional learning resources and tools that are familiar to current AAPS students, including Lexia Core 5 and DreamBox.

Can my student do this independently?

How independent a child is in the program depends on the age and skills of the student. Parents should be prepared to be actively involved with their child's learning daily. A parent or another responsible adult will monitor, work with, and at times help their child learn. This includes ensuring the child completes coursework according to the pacing guide and communicates with the teacher each week.

Will my child work with an AAPS teacher? What is the role of the teacher?

All teachers at A2Virtual+ Elementary are Ann Arbor Public School teachers. Like in a traditional school setting, each A2VE student is assigned to a classroom teacher. The teacher will provide quality teacher feedback, guidance and assistance as needed. This includes providing large group instruction 2-3 times a week, class meetings and scheduled individual/small group sessions for personalized instruction.

Are there mandatory Zoom sessions?

Students are required to attend daily literacy instruction via Zoom.Teachers may also schedule additional sessions with students via Zoom to assess their progress and provide additional small group supports. Assessment conferences and small group instruction are scheduled at a mutually convenient time and are required.

Will my child need to report in person?

Students enrolled in A2VE do not routinely report in-person. Students will, however, be required to report to participate in State and District assessments, including NWEA, M-STEP (3rd, 4th and 5th grade) and WIDA (English Language Learners). Parents are responsible to provide transportation.

Are there attendance requirements?

Yes. Students are required to attend scheduled Zoom sessions.

Will my child have opportunities to meet other students?

Children have opportunities to engage with their peers during class meetings, large group instruction and specials classes.

Do students in A2VE have specials?

All students have four specials: Art, Physical Education, Media and Vocal Music. These classes are held via Zoom.

Is A2Virtual closed if the district is closed?

On days when the district has no school, there are no Zoom meetings, specials, or office hours. Students are welcome to continue with independent work.

Do you follow the Ann Arbor Public School calendar?

Yes.

How will my child be graded?

Students will receive feedback on their assignments from their teacher. In addition, teachers will meet with students (virtually or on the phone) to assess their progress in the curriculum.

Will my child receive a report card?

Yes. Report cards are an important tool for communicating your child’s progress in grade level content.

Do we need to complete all of the lessons and modules?

The lessons and modules are sequential. Completing the lessons in order ensures continuity. Completing all of the modules ensures that your child has been exposed to the full grade level curriculum.

My child is advanced; can my child complete more than one grade level during the school year?

Students who finish the complete material for a specific grade will not be permitted to enroll in the next grade level. Teachers will, however, work with you and your child to provide enrichment and extension activities.

Do I need a computer?

Yes. A computer and daily wifi access is essential to access A2VE lessons and assignments. A ChromeBook is loaned to students by AAPS.

Do I need a printer?

No. Upper elementary students (3rd-5th grade) utilize a chrome extension called Kami which allows students to write/type directly into the assignment. Kami is a tool that is available for you through your child’s AAPS device. Printed packets are available for lower elementary students (Kindergarten-2nd grade).

What is Clever?

Clever is the portal where you will find supplemental program applications that support students' learning interests and individualized learning needs. All AAPS students are given a Clever account.

How can I get tech support?

There is a hotline available to all AAPS families. Call (734) 997-1222 for support for your district device and applications. In addition, you may email technology questions to family_techsupport@aaps.k12.mi.us.
