September, 2025
A Note from the Head of School
September has been a busy and exciting month at Laurel Christian School. Our calendar has been full—college visits, athletic events, senior portraits, See You at the Pole, the Honor Clubs Ceremony, field trips, and ACT prep have all kept our students and faculty engaged.
For me personally, the highlight of the month was the time spent with our Board of Trustees. We held two strategic planning sessions, each lasting four hours. While many might dread eight total hours of meetings, especially at the end of a long workday, I found these gatherings to be moments of reflection, vision, and encouragement. The members of our board are not only thoughtful and forward-thinking, but also deeply committed to the mission of LCS.
Together, we are focused on ensuring that Laurel Christian School remains a place where students receive an academic education grounded in a biblical worldview, an education that takes place in a safe and caring environment. Our desire is that every student grows in knowledge of God’s Word, looks to Him for guidance, and pursues His will for their life beyond high school.
We plan to have a strategic plan in place by January that will guide us over the next several years. This plan will help us remain faithful to our mission while also preparing our students to thrive in the future. We want our graduates to leave LCS prepared to succeed in college or their chosen career, but more importantly, to be equipped to defend the gospel and make disciples wherever God leads them. That is the vision driving our planning, and I am grateful for the positive and encouraging spirit of our board as we look to the future together.

Campus Life
Bridging the Campuses!
On September 2, the softball team helped spread joy at the Lower School by greeting students as they arrived, assisting them out of vehicles, and walking them to class.
This is just one way we are working together to unite our two campuses, by creating opportunities for students of all ages to interact and encourage one another.
Upcoming opportunities to interact with both campuses:
Oct. 2 - Meet the Lions (Fall Sports)
Oct. 18 - LCS Host Flag Football
Oct. 24 - Pep Rally at the Upper School at 10:45
Oct. 25 - Tailgating and Powder Puff Game 4:00 until
Nov. 6 - Harvest Festival at the Upper School campus
Nov. 21 - Thanksgiving Chapel at the Upper School - 9:40. 5th and 6th grade students will attend. Everyone is invited.
Science Department
Science in Action at LCS Upper School
Hands-on learning continues to be a cornerstone of our science program at Laurel Christian School. Recently, 8th grade Physical Science students explored the differences between physical and chemical changes through engaging lab activities. By observing and experimenting, they were able to see firsthand how matter can transform and the indicators that distinguish physical changes from chemical reactions.
Meanwhile, our 10th and 11th grade Chemistry students worked on separating mixtures using physical properties such as solubility and magnetism. These experiments challenged students to apply what they’ve learned in class to real-world scenarios, reinforcing their understanding of core concepts.
Mr. Stuart Brown has been intentional in incorporating lab projects that connect directly to classroom lessons. These experiences not only strengthen comprehension but also encourage students to think critically and ask important questions like how, why, and what if. By engaging in active exploration, students are building the skills and curiosity needed for success in science and beyond.
Science in Action at LCS Lower School
Lower School students have been busy putting science concepts into action through hands-on experiments and discovery.
In 5th grade, students explored the principles of buoyancy and density by constructing boats out of clay and testing whether they would float. Once their boats were afloat, they experimented to see how many pennies versus paper clipseach boat could hold before sinking. They also investigated cohesion and surface tension using water, glasses, and pennies, gaining a deeper understanding of the invisible forces at work all around us.
Meanwhile, 3rd grade students studied the water cycle, observing and discussing how water moves through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
These interactive lessons not only bring science to life but also encourage students to ask questions, think critically, and connect what they are learning in the classroom to the world around them.
Around Campus
Art at LCS
Creativity is thriving at Laurel Christian School as students explore a variety of artistic media and projects. At the Lower School, classroom teachers and Art Teacher Ms. Ishee are weaving art into everyday learning. 1st grade students experimented with watercolors, painting birds they learned about while reading a story. 2nd grade students sharpened their observation skills by drawing detailed insects in jars, while 6th graders practiced shading techniques with oil pastels to create beautiful, realistic pictures of apples.
At the Upper School, students in the art elective class, taught by Mrs. Kim Maner, have been using their talents to serve both the school and community. They are currently working on a special project for the Glory House, as well as contributing their creativity to the design of the Harvest Festival and Homecoming shirts.
From the youngest learners discovering new techniques to older students using their skills to bless others, the art program at LCS continues to highlight the importance of creativity, expression, and service.
1st Grade - Watercolor paintings
Art Elective - Glory House Project
2nd Grade - Insects
Opportunities for Juniors and Seniors
September has been a busy month for our juniors and seniors as they were given unique opportunities to prepare for their future beyond LCS.
On September 9, Laurel Christian School was honored to welcome Mississippi State University President and other representatives who visited with our students, sharing encouragement and insights about higher education opportunities. Just two days later, on September 11, students enrolled in Dual Enrollment courses through Jones College participated in Jones College Dual Day. They enjoyed time on campus, met their professors, and experienced a taste of college life firsthand.
Our students also benefited from visits with local professionals who shared their expertise. Whitney Philips, a Ph.D. student in Nursing Leadership at the University of Southern Mississippi, spoke with juniors and seniors about careers in healthcare. In addition, Hunter Jeffcoat met with the senior Consumer Math class to provide valuable guidance on investing and financial planning.
These experiences are a reflection of LCS’s commitment to college and career readiness, equipping students with both knowledge and connections to help them thrive in their next chapter.
Learning from our community
We believe students learn valuable lessons not only from textbooks, but also from the experiences of others. Each Friday, we set aside time for a guest speaker to share about their career or important life topics such as finances, investing, insurance, taxes, and more.
These opportunities allow our students to hear real-world wisdom from community members and LCS alumni, inspiring them to think about their future and preparing them with knowledge they will use beyond high school.
If you would like to partner with us by visiting and speaking to our students, please contact us at jrogers@laurelchristian.org. We would love to have you share your experience and insight with our students.
Honor Society, National Beta Club, and Mu Alpha Theta
Laurel Christian School recently celebrated a special evening of recognition and achievement at the Honor Society and Club Induction Ceremony. Students were honored for their commitment to excellence as new members were inducted into the MAIS Honor Society, National Beta Club, and Mu Alpha Theta.
LCS continually encourages students to go above and beyond, and these organizations align with that mission by promoting scholarship, leadership, service, and character. This year marked the inaugural class of the National Beta Club at Laurel Christian School, providing students with new opportunities to serve their community and grow as leaders. In addition, the Mu Alpha Theta chapter was reinstated, and new members were inducted, highlighting LCS’s dedication to strengthening academic opportunities in mathematics.
Adding these societies is another example of the strides Laurel Christian School is making to ensure that students are prepared for success, not only academically, but also in their character and leadership. We are excited to see the impact these students will make as they lead and serve both on campus and in the community.
Upcoming Events:
- National Beta Leadership Summit - Oct. 8-9 at USM
- MAIS Student Convention for Student Council and Honor Society - November 12

Clubs at LCS
Key Club
Key Club is an important part of student life at Laurel Christian School, giving students the chance to grow as leaders while serving others. Members of Key Club are required to complete a set number of service hours each year, encouraging students to invest their time and talents in projects that make a positive impact on our school and community. This month, Key Club members helped pack math facts for the 3rd-grade students in the county.
Through participation in service projects, students learn the value of responsibility, teamwork, and compassion. Key Club not only builds character but also provides students with meaningful opportunities to demonstrate servant leadership—an important part of the LCS mission.
We are proud of our Key Club members and the way they represent Laurel Christian School both on campus and beyond.
LCS Key Club is sponsored by Mrs. Denise Lyons
Robotics
The LCS Robotics Club is officially underway! Members recently attended the FIRST Tech Challenge Kickoff Event, where they received this year’s challenge. Excitement is high as students begin preparing for the competition season ahead.
Since the kickoff, the team has been hard at work in the lab—cleaning, organizing, and setting up their space to ensure they are ready to move into the design and building phase of their robot. This process not only teaches technical skills but also fosters teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity.
We are proud of the dedication our Robotics Club members are showing and look forward to seeing the innovative ideas they bring to life this season.
Praise Team
A few members of the LCS Praise Team will represent our school at the MAIS Choral and Ensemble Festival at Belhaven University on Thursday, November 6. These students have been putting in extra hours of practice as they prepare their specific pieces, demonstrating both dedication and talent.
Under the leadership of Mr. Hook, the Praise Team continues to grow in excellence. His vision and commitment are taking music opportunities at LCS from good to great, providing students with a platform to use their gifts to glorify God and bless others.
We are proud of our students for using their talents in this way and look forward to seeing how God uses them through music.
Serving the Community
October Community Service Project

Athletics - LCS Lions
Flag Football and Cheer
The Laurel Christian School Flag Football team was off to an exciting start, winning their first game of the season. Both our boys and girls are showing hard work, determination, and school spirit on the field.
We are especially excited to announce that LCS will host flag football games on Friday, October 18. This is a great opportunity for our community to come together, cheer on our teams, and celebrate the effort our student-athletes are putting into this season.
We encourage everyone to come out and support the Lions and fill the sidelines with blue and gold.
Softball
The Laurel Christian School Lady Lions softball team had an impressive showing at the MAIS 2A South State Tournament, held Saturday, September 27 and Monday, September 29 in Monroe, Louisiana. The team battled hard and finished as the South State Runner-Up, securing their place in the State Tournament on October 4–6 in Magee.
Coach Tyler Blackwell shared these words with the team: “Today, you showed heart, grit, and pure fight! You represented your school with everything you had, and I couldn’t be prouder. We may not have won South State, but we did what we came to do—we punched the ticket to the Division 1 side of the state tournament.”
The Lady Lions now set their sights on finishing among the top two teams in the class tournament, with their ultimate goal being nothing less than the 2025 MAIS 2A Division 1 State Championship.
"The softball team is an example of what LCS stands for. They began a team just a few years ago. They built a family of players who are committed and stick together, and the coaches have been consistent and dedicated. They have persevered and remained steadfast to get to where they are today. I am very proud of them and their accomplishments." - Mrs. Jamie Rogers, Head of School
We are thankful for the example our athletes and coaches set through their determination, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Go Lions!
Cross Country
The LCS Cross Country team is making great strides this season. The team competed in their first meet on September 11 in Hattiesburg, and since then has participated in the NEJ Meet, the SCA Meet, and another meet in Hattiesburg. With each race, our runners are finding their groove and shaving seconds off their times.
The team also enjoyed a special practice hosted by Mrs. Teresa Dinwiddie at Big Creek 10 Park. This change of scenery gave the athletes a chance to train while taking in the natural beauty of the park.
Our cross country athletes have shown tremendous dedication—enduring the heat, tackling hills, and putting in the miles of hard practice. This is a sport that is already showing great promise and will surely continue to grow at LCS.
Go Lions!
Basketball Schedule
Get ready, Lion fans—basketball season is right around the corner! Our student-athletes have been working hard in preparation, and excitement is building for another great season on the court.
We encourage all of our LCS families and friends to mark your calendars and make plans to come out and support our teams. Your presence in the stands makes a difference, and together we can create an atmosphere of encouragement and school spirit for our athletes.
Let’s fill the gym with blue and gold and cheer on our Lions as they begin their season!

CALL TO ACTION
Partnering Together to Invest in Eternity
In my two and a half years at Laurel Christian School, I have been amazed at the generosity of Audubon Drive Bible Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church. Housing LCS on their campuses and helping to maintain the grounds and buildings is a blessing beyond measure. Each campus is beautiful, well cared for, and a reflection of their desire to see young people flourish. The support of the churches through meeting physical needs, offering financial help, and providing spiritual guidance is a testimony of God’s provision, allowing His will to be accomplished.
When I meet with church and board leaders, their mission is clear: to provide a place in Laurel where students can receive an excellent education grounded in a biblical worldview, educating for eternity. Many churches faithfully support missions and missionaries, serving across the globe. Yet, what greater mission could there be than investing in the life of a child here at home, ensuring that every day they are exposed to the Word of God? That is an eternal impact.
Seeing the selfless giving of these two churches leads me to ask: why not more? Imagine the reach we could have if more churches, businesses, and individuals joined together to support this mission. Together, we can provide more opportunities, touch more lives, and make a greater difference in the Kingdom.
I am asking you to prayerfully consider this opportunity. Talk to your church leadership, your Sunday school class, or your small group. Encourage them to consider supporting LCS as a mission project.
I would be more than happy to meet with you personally and show you around Laurel Christian School. There is no greater time than now to ensure our young people grow with the truth of the Word.
