Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Our incredibly talented student athletes were shining brightly at the 5th-6th grade track meet held at North High School on Tuesday. Shaw swept the relay races bringing home 4 1st place trophies as well as many, many ribbons for individual events. A huge shout out to Coach Paul Wilfert for his skilled work with our track and field team!
AND, what incredible science we were treated to on Tuesday night! Projects varied from plants, to emotions, to catapulting kittens! The children were proud of their discoveries and so thrilled to be able to share them. Thank you for taking part, showing up and supporting our student scientists—the food was great too!
Next week we will hold Parent/Teacher conferences. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have not scheduled your appointment. These will be the last conference of the 2023/2024 school year. Please remember that March 6th, 7th and 8th are early release days to accommodate conferences.
Don’t forget to make your tax credit donation to Shaw Montessori. Without your help, many of the desirables cannot be realized like the Outdoor Environment for the littles and field trip scholarships for the middles and bigs. You may donate here: https://www.phxschools.org/tax-credit or we have attached a paper form. This opportunity is open to any AZ taxpayer.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall
It’s Open Enrollment time!
Each year our district needs the Open Enrollment forms collected from all the students that attend our schools, and many of you may remember filling them out every year around this time. We appreciate your prompt participation in this necessary form as you continue your child’s education at one of the few, FREE, public Montessori schools in the city.
Please fill out the attached Open Enrollment form and return to the Front Office or return via email to Claire.Kooyahoema@phxschools.org
If you wish to continue your child’s education at Shaw Montessori, you will NEED to return the Open Enrollment form.
Please reach out with any questions.

Garden
Greetings!
Our third week with salads was a blast! We used some of our same ingredients and explored other brassicas. The students had a chance to see the mustard flowering. It looks very similar to a broccoli flower. They make yellow mustard with this seed. We used some additional edible flower garnishes, such as, nasturtium and hollyhock, to give our salads some color. The students love this block. It will be hard to follow up. Our next block will be calendula. We will learn about the abundant health benefits and make both hot and iced tea.
I had the privilege of helping Coach Wilfert with the track meet. It was pleasure to encourage our students and watch them do their best. We took home gold medals in both 5th and 6th grade categories. Thanks, Coach, for hosting that event and giving the students an opportunity to compete. They really enjoyed it. And congratulations to our 5th and 6th grade athletes! Back to being a garden teacher next week.
We need parent volunteers for our alumni night on 03/27 and our parent night in the garden on 04/02. I have included the sign-up links for those two events. If you would like to help then please sign up:
Alumni Night: HERE
Parent Night in the Garden: link to sign up coming soon.
The seed library is nearly full. Catch me on campus or email me if you need some seeds. We have over 60 varieties that could help start your home garden in the spring. I also have transplants that you can take home. They are currently residing in our little hoop house. We have basil, cilantro, parsley, zinnias, marigold, and brassicas. Let me know if you need any transplants for your spring garden.
We are always seeking coffee grounds, eggshells, seeds, aluminum cans and FLOWER VASES. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!
