Principal's Update
Dear Kenwood Families:
As we prepare to enter the 6th week of school, our students are eager to settle into a predictable academic routine, to go deeper into their learning, and to push themselves toward goal-setting and goal-achieving. We've completed our fall assessments, and with this information, our teachers, support staff, and volunteers are planning or implementing lessons to meet the needs of our students, whether they're working at, above, or below grade level expectations. We're here to help every child fall in love with school and to thrive.
If you haven't already, please sign up for a conference with your child's teacher today. Conferences will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Teacher-parent communication and partnership are so important! If you're not sure how to make a conference appointment, please call Danielle at 612-668-2760 and she'll help you out! Interpreters and transportation are available.
Be sure to join us at the PTA-sponsored Fall Family Festival on Thursday, October 9 from 4:15-6:00 pm. It's going to be so fun! All students with their parents/caregivers can enjoy a meal provided by Namaste Cafe (halal), pick a pumpkin, enjoy apples, cider, and popcorn, get a flu shot, explore the Book Buggie, and meet an extra-special guest author in the Outdoor Classroom at around 4:15. As always, there will be s'mores and time to play with friends on the playground and in the football fun zone. The Kenwood Closet will be open to everyone in the lunchroom. Thank you to our PTA volunteers for organizing this wonderful community event. Call the main office by Oct. 8 to secure transportation if needed.
If you watch the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday, keep an eye out for Ms. Grace and cheer her on! We're proud of you, Grace -- maybe more of us will join you next year!
This Kenwood Courier is covering this week and next week. The next Kenwood Courier will be shared on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
Enjoy this beautiful, unusually warm, autumn weekend. See you soon!

Application to Educational Benefits
The Application for Educational Benefits (formerly known as Free and Reduced-Price Lunch) lets families know if they qualify for certain benefits and is one of the ways funding is determined for schools. Families of all income levels should complete the application regardless of perceived eligibility.
Applying matters! This information helps to:
- Determine benefits for students and families (e.g., no-cost school meals, free bus cards, discounted internet, PEBT)
- Generate about $100 million in district funding each year;
- Qualify schools and community sites to serve no-cost food to youth 18 and under after school and in the summer months.
The Application for Educational Benefits can be completed through SchoolCafe
- Visit the SchoolCafe
- Click on Complete the Application for Educational Benefits Online (login not required but preferred);
- Follow the instructions to complete your online application.

Join the PTA Kenwood Volunteer Team!
Volunteers needed! Please click here (with the link below embedded) to see all the upcoming volunteer opportunities with the PTA at school. Many hands make light work - give as much or as little time as you can. We will add any new events and signups to this link throughout the year, so you can always check back and see what is needed if you have time to spare.
For October, we are still looking for caregivers to help in the lunch room. Unlike in years past, you don't have to sign up for a consistent rotation. Have an upcoming day off work? Stop in for an hour block during your student's lunch and help keep lunch running smoothly. Are your mornings flexible? Walk and Roll to School Day is coming up on Wednesday, October 8th. We need caregiver volunteers to escort students from the bus around Kenwood Park on their walk to school. Meet at the corner of Logan and Douglas at 9:10, or station yourself at any of the crossing points along the route (students will walk west along Douglas and cross at Oliver to head south towards Kenwood around Kenwood Park). We are also gearing up for our Fall Festival on October 9, and there are many time slots which still need to be filled. Help with set up, during the event at one of our stations, or afterwards with clean up. These community events are always so much fun for our students, thanks to the efforts of many. We appreciate you! Any finally, teacher/caregiver conferences are coming up! The PTA coordinates a hot meal for staff during their very long conference days. Please sign up to contribute and help show our appreciation for our amazing Kenwood staff!
