Around the School Spotlight Around the School Spotlight

For our final week, we saved the best for last! This week, we are highlighting some accomplishments of our students! Day after day, our students show up in amazing ways. Whether it’s supporting their peers, working hard in class, extending kindness to someone in need or participating in any kind of enrichment activity, they go above and beyond and represent our school well! We are so proud of our students. 🧡

In addition to running Chess Club after school each week, our students were able to participate in a Chess Tournament with three elementary schools participating. We are so proud of our Hawks View group for bringing back the 1st place trophy! They worked hard, showed great sportsmanship and had fun!

Chef Sherwood Chef Sherwood

As a culminating prize to our “Responsibility Challenge,” students were randomly selected from multiple classrooms to participate in our first Chef Sherwood. During this event, students created chef hats, were given a tour of our kitchen, tasted a variety of fruits and participated in making a smoothie that they got to enjoy, along with their peers. We appreciate our Nutrition Services Department for helping make this happen!

Helpful Hawks Helpful Hawks

Each year as 4th graders, students have the opportunity to apply to be a Helpful Hawk as a 5th grader. Through the application process, we are looking for students who can serve as role models in helping around the school. Our Helpful Hawks support both students and teachers. We are grateful to have their help and they are very loved by our youngest students!

Canned Food Drive Canned Food Drive

Each Winter, a highlight for our school is our canned food drive, which is headed up by Mrs. Conrad. This year, our students and families definitely showed up to support community members in need! A whopping 7,123 canned food items were brought in, along with many toys. A hard working group of students plan for the Drive by making posters and presenting to classrooms. They then transition to collecting, counting & boxing items each day, and finally, they meet at the Sherwood Elks Lodge one evening to assemble food & toy boxes for local families. We are so proud of their hard work and desire to support our local community!

Summer & Winter Reading Summer & Winter Reading

Our library program creates an opportunity for an extra check out and earning prizes just by reading over the summer. We handout a Summer Reading Bingo sheet at the end of the school year. Students who complete a bingo will receive a prize & those who complete a blackout will receive a prize and an extra check out for the entire school year. Each square asks students to read something different. Be on the lookout for this sheet in June…you can print one off of Hawks View's Media Homepage.

Additionally, students recently received prizes for participating in our Winter Reading Challenge. We had close to 100 participants this year! We partner with the Sherwood Public Library for the Winter Reading Challenge. We love providing these additional opportunities and incentives to read!

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)

OBOB Students

Each year, many of our 3rd-5th graders participate in OBOB. This is a state-wide, optional, reading comprehension and motivation program that gets kids reading titles they may have never considered reading before. Each year, our students spend weeks reading, preparing, quizzing each other and getting ready for the battles (with their teams). The Hawks View OBOB program is run by Mrs. Conrad & Mrs. Bassich who both work tirelessly on creating a fun, competitive and respectful environment for our students. With the first round of battles taking place this week, we’re excited to see how our students do! Last year, the winning Hawks View team won the regional battle and made it to State! Good luck, Hawks!

Spelling Bee Spelling Bee

Each year, our 4th and 5th graders participate in a local Spelling Bee. Once grade level winners are identified (from in-class assessments), we hold a Hawks View Spelling Bee. This year, our winner was Ruby Wheeler! We are excited for Ruby to participate in the Regional Spelling Bee in March!

Thunder Postal Service (TPS) Thunder Postal Service (TPS)

Thanks to Mrs. Henderson, classroom teachers and PAC, Hawks View has its very own mail system where kids & staff can write and receive mail! In their classrooms, students are learning how to write letters, address envelopes and about how the postal system works. Our 3rd graders are acting as “mail carriers” each week by collecting, sorting and delivering the mail across our school. To kick this off, all students have a buddy that they will write to and receive from. We look forward to watching this grow!

We are looking forward to welcoming you all to our STEM Night from 5:00-7:00PM on Thursday, February 29. Food will be provided from 5:00-6:00 in the cafeteria and activities will be available throughout the building. We wanted to expand our focus to include the other three elements of STEM, beyond just math as in past years.

This year, you and your students will find math with their teachers, science and technology activities in the STEM lab, as well as engineering and technology in the commons area. In addition, we have invited Sherwood middle and high school courses and local community partners to showcase some of their offerings. We hope you can join us for this fun-filled event.. *Please note: This is not a drop off event. We expect students to be with their families as there will be a lot of expensive and breakable equipment around the building. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
