The Buzz
Summer Term - 18th June 2026
Message from the Head of School
Dear Parents/Carers,
Well the weather did certainly come out for Sports Week this week! A huge thank you to Miss Pearson (our PE co-ordinator) who worked tirelessly from Monday-Thursday with organising and running various events with our staff. Check out the online gallery for some great action shots !
HISN Sports Week
This week, HISN invited parents/families/carers to come and join us in celebrating the successes of our children for competing in various sporting activities and events. All the HISN children had fun and everybody watching was incredibly proud.
Our weekly principle was ‘challenge’ and we saw this in so many children whereby they really pushed themselves. A big thank you to our HJS Year 6 ‘House Captains’ who came to support the KS1 Sports Events. They were a huge help with the demonstrations and tidying up at the end of the day.
Phonics
Last week, the Year 1 team administered the annual ‘Phonics Screener Check’. We are incredibly proud of our results and look forward to sharing them with you once finalised. Thank you to all the staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the children were ready and did their best.
Finally, have a lovely weekend when it arrives and it looks to be a warm week next week. Please remember children will need a hat with their name in it and if you need to put on sun-cream, please do so before your child comes into school.

Year 1
The summer term is always a busy one, with lots of amazing work going on as well as lots of amazing wider curriculum activities too! The sunshine was certainly out for sports afternoon where we had lots of fun demonstrating all the skills we have been learning in PE. We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and think we did brilliantly! A huge ‘thank you’ to all who came to watch and cheer everyone on – this really helped create a wonderful atmosphere.
Next week, we have Arts Week to look forward to and we are incredibly excited to experience all the creative activities we have lined up in celebration of this year’s theme of the ‘Wild’, where we will get to show off the artistic skills we have been learning across the year, you can be amazed at all we have created – we hope you are impressed!
Looking ahead, year 1 has the exciting opportunity to meet and hold some unusual creatures in July with the visit of the hugely popular animal experience company, Safari Pete. We will be meeting the likes of Lady Gaga the tarantula, Talluluah the meerkat, Juliet the owl, Boo-Boo the monitor lizard and Drake the snake, to name just a few. We are looking forward to asking lots of questions and sharing our own knowledge of the various creatures, as well as learning about how these had been rescued.
Alongside all of this, we are continuing with all of our amazing learning too. We have been looking at the features of fairy tales and story writing in English, retelling the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and writing our very own versions.
We have been learning all about the concept of ‘time’ in maths, reading and telling the time to the hour and half hour, as well as understanding how periods of time are measured, e.g. seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, years.
We have also been identifying the human and physical features in geography, focusing on England’s capital city, London, as well as learning about butterflies and their life-cycles in science. Phew, we really are busy bees in year 1!
Amazon Wish Lists
Over the last few years families have very kindly contributed gifts to the school via the Amazon wish list. These gifts are always incredibly well received and have made such a difference to the school community and your children.
This Wish List is populated by teachers who have a clear understanding of the additional resources that are needed and what would make the biggest difference. When completing your purchase, please remember to include a gift receipt stating which year group it should go to and who it is from.
If you are able to make a purchase, please follow the links below:
Parking
Reminder to all parents to be considerate to our neighbours when dropping off and collecting your child. Do not park on zig-zag lines, double yellow lines or block neighbours driveways. Parking on zig-zag lines blocks visibility for both drivers and pedestrians, particularly young children who may be harder to see. Please park legally and considerately, and allow extra time to find appropriate parking. Even better – consider walking, cycling or using a park-and-stride location if possible.
