Puma Weekly Update
Week of February 19-23
Welcome to Week 23!
Thank you to those of you who shared a promising practice (and those who were prepared to share) at our math pd on Friday. I hope you each were able to take away something from the unconference model to support your math instruction. Site council has approved funds for each team to spend a half day digging into iReady. Please email Sarah and Nick to let them know what month your team would like to use your half day.

CHOICES FOR WEDNESDAY 2/21/24
1. Always, if there is something being facilitated at your school by a building leader or coach, please attend this before selecting from the other choices. Remember, educator connection, collaboration and consistency at the building level will ALWAYS support students in a meaningful way!
2. VIRTUAL OPTIONS: Login for the session of your choice! We have THREE virtual / live options this week...If you could, please sign up using the GOOGLE FORM.
All Virtual Sessions begin at 8:50am and end by 9:45am.
A. Seeing Beyond the Leaves: In this session, participants will get a brief overview of different behaviors that are seen in school settings that can be placed into four categories of trauma: flight, fight, freeze, fawn, and various systems of inequity and how those behaviors can look based on the intersections of four categories and different systems of inequalities. Participants will use a reflective activity (tree, truck, roots) to practice these identification skills using a scenario provided by the facilitator. Facilitated by Martha Ochoa-Leyva, MESD. Link: https://multnomahesd-org.zoom.us/j/8235389629
B. Early Literacy: Phoneme (sound) Blending: Phoneme blending is a necessary skill for early literacy. We will examine some Tier 1 instructional practices which will help most students learn this skill. But since it’s not an innate human ability, some students will inevitably need more support to learn. We will also examine some additional instructional practices to give those students the instruction they need. Facilitated by Elizabeth Israel-Davis Link: https://multnomahesd-org.zoom.us/j/4807084889
C. Understanding and Supporting Students with Autism Part II: This session is a continuation of Part I where we explored the 7 Domains of Autism Spectrum Disorder and how it impacts students in our schools. In this second part session we will examine specific strategies to support students of all ages who experience ASD and provide you with tools to use. Facilitated by Aika and Karen. 3. Choice Menu with a variety of options for you to explore independently, with a partner OR a small group of colleagues. Click here to access. Click on the embedded links to watch videos, read about concepts or walk through strategies to support the work you do with students!
Remember: We are asking that you complete a PL Tracker Form to anonymously share your choice for the week. This will help us better meet your needs and offer relevant and useful material to you in the future. Thank you!

ELA Mapping
We are still looking for staff to join the ELA mapping revision teams. We are specifically short on kinder, 2nd, and 5th grade team members. Please consider applying.
Click here to apply: Elementary LA Mapping Revisions Team Application
Last summer a team of teachers and coaches gathered to map our HMH curriculum for Reading. This team engaged in professional learning, developed Unit Overviews and Weekly Plans, and selected Assessments.
We know that when we are working with new materials, we will have to continue to monitor and adjust. After spending several months implementing the maps, we will convene a team to review teacher feedback from the year and make revisions to the maps, as well as other important tasks. This team will act as key decision makers as we move forward with HMH implementation.
The goals of the team will include:
Reviewing teacher feedback from this year and using that in conjunction with your own experiences to inform updates to the maps
Participating in professional learning on assessment (K-2) and foundational skills (3-5) to inform mapping decisions
Taking a deeper dive into the assessments, ensuring they are adequately aligned to module objectives, and make edits as necessary
This year, the mapping revisions will happen on sub release days during the school year so as not to interfere with Math mapping that will occur in summer.
We will gather from 8:15am-3:45pm on the following days:
K-2 Mapping:
Thursday, May 9th
Tuesday, May 21st
3-5 Mapping:
Thursday, March 7th
Thursday, May 30th
Black History Month
This Black History Month (BHM), we have resources that will be provided around Black history, classroom lessons and additional support to empower the voices of our Black and African American community, families, students, and staff. The Equity Team over at Alice Ott has put together this slideshow with resources. Thank you Alice Ott! Additionally, there is our Black Excellence Show Case at Floyd Light on Friday, February 16th from 5:30-7:30.
