Decatur community,
This past week I got to experience for the first time what Halloween Clean-Up is all about. If I am being honest, I was a little bit nervous leading up to the big event, just imagining our students all over the town, transported in the back of giant trucks.
Now that it is behind me, I have nothing but positive things to say about the whole experience. The kids worked hard, there were smiles all around, and positive, impactful memories were made for all involved.
As I continue my honesty, I did feel a bit guilty being the principal in the warm Suburban being chauffeured around by the great "General" Juenemann, (He did an amazing job by the way), but, hey, it's tradition.
There are so many people to thank and recognize, and I can't say it any better than Mrs. Breth did on Facebook, so make sure to check out that section below and some of the pictures.
From one great tradition to another, this week is for the high school musical!
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to history teacher Jenee Davis and her Life Skills students. Ms. Davis took her students downtown this past Friday to the County Elections' Office (pictured) to let her students see what was done to get ready for elections. They were going to walk, but, always prepared, Ms. Davis planned ahead and got a Suburban reserved when she saw the forecast.
Shoutout to Head of Transportation Brian Simonsson. Mr. Simonsson has quite the skillset when it comes to maintaining all of our district vehicles. Always pleasant, always prepared, and always there when you need him.
Shoutout to every student that took the time to come out and help with Halloween Clean-Up this past Friday. They were great, and it was the type of experience that every kid should be a part of and benefit from. I would be very excited to see how many of our students participated 5-12, meaning, how many did this when they were in 5th grade and did it every year until they were seniors? Great for a resume, and what a great goal to set four yourself.
Shoutout to all of the families that called in and put their names down for Halloween Clean-Up. There were 24 homes that were on the list. The gesture is grand, the experience meaningful, but none of it happens without you reaching out. Thank you.
Shoutout to each student that participated in the KMEA music auditions in Hays this past weekend. I have not heard the official results, but I am sure Mrs. Breth will update on Facebook this week, and I will definitely shoutout next week. It takes a lot of courage to get up and sing in front of strangers, more so when there are fewer and fewer singing along with you.
Shoutout to Mr. Brad Weese. Everyone will get to see and know Mr. Weese more and more this year as the new head High School boys' basketball coach, but my shoutout is to his subbing. He is the districts' emergency sub, always on call. This week, he was yo-yoed around from class to class, building to building. He handled it all in stride and with a positive attitude.
Shoutout to math teacher Gina Witt and her 7th and 8th grade math students. I'm not even going to go into the blue hopscotch pattern tape in the hallway that originated from her mind, but rather I am going to focus on her lesson Friday. Students brought in foods and applied what the were learning in class in the kitchen. For those of you that know your fairy tales, I appeared to be playing the role of Hansel, as each kid was bringing me a treat. Amazing and fun learning experience with tons of application to life. No wonder she teaches Applied Math to our high schoolers.
Shoutout to the middle school students and their baking talents. Man, we really need to get that FACS program back up and running. Just scratching the surface here, but here were some of the items I was treated with: No Bake Cookies (still warm), peanut butter pie, soft chocolate chip cookies, homemade granola, and a lot more.
Shoutout to the freshmen class for putting their best foot forward on this week's PreACT test. Regardless of what the score will tell us when we get them back in a few weeks, the students gave it their all. I was impressed by the overall general effort that I saw the students putting forth. Here's to that effort paying off in positive outcomes.

Things You Should Know
Seussical the Musical
There are few events that will be held over the course of a high school year that will require more time and practice than a high school musical. I am so looking forward to seeing the final product this week, as I know that our students and staff have been putting countless hours into the the production. It's time to show them the support for all of their efforts.
Mrs. Jenny Tally will be taking over the reigns for this year's musical. She has chosen to do one that she loves, one that she has performed herself. This year DCHS will perform Seussical the Musical.
SHOWTIMES:
Saturday, 11-12: 7:30
Sunday, 11-13: 2:00
Tickets:
Adults: $7
Students: $5
Synopsis provided from mtishows.com:
Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.
The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.
2022 Halloween Clean-Up
Here is the message from Mrs. Breth on Facebook:
Thank you to the DCHS and OES students who cleaned up 24 yards at the 2022 Halloween Clean-Up -- and to their sponsors Mr. Bricker, Mr. Williams, Mr. Kyle Breth, Mrs. Springer and Mr. Tim Breth.
Thank you also to Nolan Wasson, Tom Wasson, Dan Morford, and Monte Moore for the use of their trucks and for hauling students from house to house.
Thank you to the City of Oberlin for the hotdogs and apples and to the Booster Club and the Lions Club for grilling and serving the hotdogs.
Finally, thank you to five seniors who organized and led the annual clean-up and who kept our annual tradition going strong: Josh Juenemann, Bryant Addleman, Ellie Anderson, Teague Morford, and Olivia Williby. The teachers chose the five seniors, and the student body chose Josh as the general.
The freshmen will get donuts from Mr. Holloway for having the highest participation with 72.2 percent of the class helping out. The sophomores were right behind with 70.8 percent participation.
The juniors were next with 52.4 percent, and the 7th and 8th graders tied with 51.9 percent. The seniors had 47.4 percent participation.
For 98 years, DCHS students and teachers have kept this incredible service project going.
